In Windows 11, “primary monitor” and “main display” refer to the display assigned the main-display role. Changing that selection is different from arranging screens, choosing whether to extend or duplicate them, or setting where taskbars appear. To change it, open Settings > System > Display, select the display you want, and expand Multiple displays. The exact wording or availability of the main-display control can vary by Windows build.
What “Make this my main display” changes
The setting assigns the selected screen as Windows’ main display. It does not choose how many screens are active, mirror their contents, or set their physical positions in the room. Microsoft’s multi-monitor guide describes identifying and arranging displays and choosing display modes, but does not specify every effect of the main-display role on app launch locations, desktop icons, notifications, or other Windows elements. Those behaviors should not be assumed to be universal.

How to choose the main display
- Connect your screens and open Settings > System > Display. If a connected screen is missing, expand Multiple displays and select Detect. Microsoft’s multi-monitor guide covers detection and display setup.
- Select Identify to show a number on each physical screen. In Display settings, select the tile with the number that matches the screen you want.
- If the pointer crosses between screens in the wrong place, drag the numbered tiles to reflect the screens’ physical positions, then select Apply. This changes the logical layout Windows uses for moving the pointer; it does not change which screen is the main display.
- With the intended screen selected, expand Multiple displays and choose the main-display option if it is available. The control’s exact wording may differ between Windows 11 builds.
Main display, projection mode, and layout are different choices
| Choice | What it controls | Where to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Main display | Which connected screen has the main-display role; the cited Microsoft guide does not enumerate every shell or app behavior that may respond. | Settings > System > Display; select a display and expand Multiple displays. |
| Projection mode | Whether Windows uses only the PC screen, duplicates the image, extends the desktop, or uses only the second screen. | Press Windows+P and choose a mode. |
| Display arrangement | How the numbered screens relate spatially, affecting how the pointer moves between them. | Settings > System > Display; drag the display tiles and select Apply. |
Use Extend when you want a desktop that spans screens and lets you move items between them; use Duplicate to show the same content on each. These Windows+P choices do not set the main-display role.
Taskbar behavior is configured separately
Windows has separate controls for showing the taskbar on multiple displays and for combining buttons on other taskbars. Microsoft documents the Show my taskbar on all displays option and choices for how buttons are combined on other taskbars. These settings govern taskbar visibility and button behavior, not the physical arrangement of displays or their projection mode. Microsoft’s Windows 11 taskbar guide describes the taskbar options. For taskbar modes that distinguish the primary display from the screen containing a window, Microsoft Learn documents multi-monitor taskbar behavior.

Connection changes are a separate matter from selecting the main display. Microsoft says external-monitor windows are minimized when a computer is undocked and restored to their previous positions when it is docked again. Display settings also include options to remember window locations based on monitor connection and to minimize windows when a monitor is disconnected. Microsoft’s guide describes these behaviors and settings.
