The useful question is why the numbers differ: check the valuation method, forecast horizon, operating assumptions, discount rate, terminal value, disclosures and uncertainty.
A price target is an analyst’s model-based estimate for a stated future horizon. Intrinsic value is an estimate of what a security is worth from its fundamentals, often using discounted cash flow or another valuation framework. They can be based on the same assumptions, so they are not automatically independent checks.

What each number actually means
Price target: a time-bound analyst estimate
A price target is an analyst’s estimated share price associated with a research horizon and usually a recommendation such as buy, hold or sell. The horizon might be 12 months, but you must confirm the report because the time frame is not universal. A target is an opinion generated by a model, not a promise that the share price will reach that level.

Analysts can derive targets with discounted cash flow, dividend discount, comparable-company multiples, sum-of-the-parts analysis or a blend of methods. The target may represent a projected price at the end of the stated period, an estimated fair value today, or a value adjusted for an expected catalyst. Read the methodology section rather than inferring the definition from the headline number.

Intrinsic value: a fundamentals-based estimate
Intrinsic value is the estimated value of an asset based on its investment characteristics and fundamentals, assuming a sufficiently complete understanding of those characteristics. In equity valuation, analysts estimate it with present-value models, relative valuation multiples or asset-based methods.
In a discounted cash flow (DCF) model, expected future cash flows are converted to today’s dollars by discounting them at a required rate of return. The result depends on the chosen cash-flow definition, forecast period, growth, margins, reinvestment, discount rate and terminal value. Intrinsic value is therefore an output of assumptions, not a directly observable fact.
Why the two measures can overlap
An analyst’s price target may itself be the analyst’s intrinsic-value estimate carried forward to a stated date. For example, an analyst could calculate a DCF value today, grow that value by an assumed return for 12 months and publish the resulting target. Comparing that target with a separate DCF estimate does not provide two independent opinions if both use similar forecasts and discount rates.
Before deciding that one number is more credible, identify whether the estimates differ in date, method or assumptions. Independence matters more than the labels attached to the figures.
The comparison framework: seven questions to ask
| Question | What to inspect | Why it changes the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Are the dates aligned? | Publication date, valuation date and the target’s end date | A current intrinsic-value estimate and a 12-month target may describe different points in time. |
| What method is used? | DCF, dividend discount, trading multiples, precedent transactions, asset value or a combination | Different methods measure different aspects of value and can produce different outputs for the same company. |
| What is being forecast? | Revenue growth, margins, earnings, capital spending, working capital and free cash flow | Small changes in operating forecasts can materially change value. |
| How is risk reflected? | Required return, discount rate, beta, credit spread and scenario probabilities | A lower discount rate increases present value; a higher rate reduces it. |
| What happens after the forecast period? | Terminal growth, exit multiple and long-run margins | Terminal value can represent a large share of a DCF, making long-run assumptions critical. |
| How large is the gap? | Estimated value or target versus the current share price | Valuation is uncertain, so a small difference may not justify an investment decision. |
| Who produced the estimate? | Analyst disclosures, financial interests and investment-banking relationships | Potential conflicts and incentives affect how you should interpret a recommendation. |
How to compare a target and intrinsic value step by step
- Record the current market price. Use the price at the same date as your comparison and note whether the stock has since split, paid a dividend or issued shares. A target published months ago may no longer be relevant after a major earnings release or corporate action.
- Write down each estimate and its date. Record the analyst’s target, the stated horizon and the date of the intrinsic-value calculation. If a source does not state a horizon or valuation date, mark that omission instead of assuming one.
- Identify the valuation method. Look for labels such as DCF, FCFF, FCFE, dividend discount, price-to-earnings, enterprise-value-to-EBITDA or sum-of-the-parts. A target based on a peer multiple should not be compared as if it were a stand-alone DCF.
- Match the cash-flow definition. Enterprise free cash flow (FCFF) is discounted at the weighted average cost of capital and produces enterprise value; debt and other claims are then subtracted to reach equity value. Free cash flow to equity (FCFE) is cash available to common shareholders and is discounted at the cost of equity. Mixing these definitions can create an apparently precise but invalid comparison.
- Compare operating assumptions. Put revenue growth, operating margins, tax rates, capital expenditure, depreciation, working-capital investment and share-count assumptions in a side-by-side worksheet. Use the company’s disclosures to check whether the forecasts are plausible.
- Compare discounting and terminal assumptions. Note the discount rate, terminal growth rate or exit multiple, and the forecast length. Ask whether the terminal assumptions are consistent with a mature company and the broader economy.
- Calculate the implied gap from the market price. For any estimate, the arithmetic is
(estimated value − current price) ÷ current price. Keep the result tied to the date and assumptions; it is not a forecast of your investment return. - Test sensitivity before acting. Recalculate value with modestly different growth, margin and discount-rate inputs. If the apparent upside disappears under reasonable alternatives, treat the estimate as highly uncertain.
- Read disclosures and the recommendation language. Check for financial interests, investment-banking relationships, compensation arrangements and other conflicts. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission advises investors not to rely solely on an analyst recommendation.
- Decide whether the evidence clears your threshold. Require a sufficiently large and well-supported gap to compensate for model error, taxes, transaction costs and the possibility that your assumptions are wrong. The threshold is a decision rule, not a universal percentage.
How the main valuation methods change the answer
Discounted cash flow
DCF estimates value as the present value of expected future cash flows. A simplified expression is Value = Σ [FCFt ÷ (1 + r)t] + [Terminal value ÷ (1 + r)n], where r is the discount rate and n is the final forecast year.

The analyst must define the cash flow, choose a forecast period and estimate growth, margins and reinvestment. For FCFF, the discount rate is generally the weighted average cost of capital and the result is enterprise value. For FCFE, the cash flow belongs to common shareholders and the cost of equity is used. A DCF is not automatically more objective than a multiple-based target; it simply makes more assumptions explicit.
Dividend discount models
A dividend discount model values the expected dividends to shareholders. It can be useful for mature, consistently distributing companies, but it is less informative when a company retains most cash, has irregular payouts or is expected to change its capital-allocation policy.
Comparable-company multiples
Relative valuation applies a multiple observed for peer companies or a sector to a company’s earnings, sales, cash flow or operating metric. The result depends on peer selection, the period used, accounting differences, growth prospects and the market’s own valuation. A target based on a forward price-to-earnings multiple may move even if the company’s intrinsic cash-generation prospects have not changed, simply because the peer group rerates.
Asset-based and sum-of-the-parts methods
Asset-based valuation estimates the value of identifiable assets and liabilities. Sum-of-the-parts analysis values business segments separately and adds or subtracts corporate items. These methods can reveal hidden assets or segment differences, but they require judgments about private-market multiples, overhead allocation, taxes and the probability of a transaction.

| Item | Illustrative value | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Current share price | $50 | Reference market price on the comparison date |
| Analyst price target | $70 | 12-month target based on a stated valuation method |
| Separate intrinsic-value estimate | $62 | Value estimated as of today with a different model |
| Target-implied gap | 40% | ($70 − $50) ÷ $50; not a guaranteed return |
| Intrinsic-value gap | 24% | ($62 − $50) ÷ $50; subject to model uncertainty |
The figures disagree because the target could assume faster revenue growth, a higher terminal multiple or a later valuation date. The intrinsic-value model could use a higher discount rate or more conservative margins. The correct next step is not to average $70 and $62. It is to locate the assumptions that create the $8 difference.
One-variable sensitivity
| Scenario | Key change from the base case | Illustrative intrinsic value | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conservative | Lower growth, slightly lower margins and a higher discount rate | $45 | The stock would not appear undervalued under these assumptions. |
| Base case | Middle-of-the-range operating and discount assumptions | $62 | Indicates a 24% gap from the illustrative market price. |
| Optimistic | Higher growth, stronger margins and a lower discount rate | $82 | Shows how favorable assumptions can widen apparent upside. |
If reasonable scenarios span $45 to $82, the single $62 estimate should be treated as a midpoint in an uncertain range, not as a precise fair price. The width of the range is decision-relevant information.
When a gap is large enough to matter
There is no universal cutoff that turns a valuation gap into a mispricing. CFA Institute materials emphasize that valuation estimates vary with inputs and that analysts may require a material difference between estimated value and market price before concluding that the market is wrong.
Use a larger required gap when the business has volatile cash flows, a short operating history, heavy leverage, binary regulatory outcomes, substantial terminal value or unusually wide analyst assumptions. A smaller gap may be meaningful for a stable company with transparent disclosures and modest model sensitivity, but even then it is not proof of a future gain.
Include the effects of taxes, trading costs, currency, dividends and the time needed for the market to recognize a difference. A target’s 12-month horizon may not match your willingness to hold through a multi-year investment thesis.

Align the numbers with your own horizon
Short-term traders
A long-term intrinsic-value estimate may say little about a price move over days or weeks. Earnings announcements, guidance changes, liquidity and market sentiment can dominate in the short run. A 12-month target should not be presented as a near-term trading signal.
Long-term investors
For a multi-year investor, the quality of the company’s cash generation, reinvestment opportunities, balance sheet and competitive position may matter more than whether a target is reached on schedule. Rebuild the valuation with a horizon that matches your holding period and update it when fundamentals change.
Income-focused investors
Dividend sustainability, payout policy and balance-sheet capacity may be more relevant than a target based on an earnings multiple. Confirm whether the valuation method actually models the cash distributions you depend on.

Check disclosures and incentives
Analyst reports generally include disclosures about financial interests and relationships with the covered company. Read them. Potential conflicts do not automatically invalidate an analysis, but they are relevant context. The SEC’s guidance on securities analyst recommendations cautions investors against relying on a recommendation alone.

Distinguish a target from a projection
The SEC’s Investor Bulletin on Performance Claims, dated September 15, 2022, explains that targets and projections are hypothetical and do not represent actual performance. Ask how the figure was calculated, what assumptions support it and what could make it fail.
Look for revisions and disagreement
One target can be an outlier. Compare the underlying methods and assumptions across several independent analyses rather than treating a consensus number as a fact. Agreement among analysts may reflect shared data or shared models rather than independent confirmation.
Common mistakes that produce false confidence
- Comparing different dates. A target issued before an earnings release may not be comparable with an intrinsic-value estimate using newer information.
- Assuming intrinsic value is exact. A DCF is only as reliable as its forecasts, discount rate and terminal assumptions.
- Treating labels as methods. “Fair value,” “price target” and “upside” can describe outputs from very different models.
- Averaging incompatible estimates. Combining a peer multiple target with a DCF value without understanding the inputs can conceal rather than reduce uncertainty.
- Ignoring dilution and capital structure. Options, restricted stock, convertible debt and buybacks affect per-share value.
- Using a target as a guarantee. A target is not a promise, stop-loss level or assured return.
- Confusing social sentiment with valuation. SEC and FINRA guidance on social-sentiment investing tools advises investors not to rely solely on such tools or recommendation indicators; review company disclosures and other analysis.
- Forcing precision. Reporting $62.14 as if it were materially different from $60 can be misleading when the model’s reasonable range is wide.
- Ignoring the balance sheet. Enterprise value, debt, cash, pension obligations and minority interests must be reconciled before converting a business value into a per-share figure.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
The cited SEC guidance establishes that analyst targets and projections are hypothetical, that investors should understand how performance claims are calculated and that recommendations should not be used in isolation. CFA Institute valuation materials explain intrinsic value, DCF mechanics, alternative valuation models and the effect of changing inputs. They do not establish a universal hit rate or prove that price targets are more accurate than intrinsic-value estimates.
Consequently, there is no evidence-based rule that intrinsic value is always superior, or that a consensus target predicts the future price. The defensible approach is to compare the models, test the assumptions and demand a gap large enough to compensate for uncertainty.
Bottom line: compare the reasoning, not just the figures
Start with the current market price, then place the price target and intrinsic-value estimate beside it with their dates and horizons. Trace every difference to method, cash-flow forecasts, risk assumptions, terminal value or disclosure. If both estimates rely on the same model, treat them as one view rather than independent confirmation. Neither number is a guarantee; the better decision comes from a transparent, stress-tested valuation that matches your own time horizon and risk tolerance.
