Yes—Microsoft Teams can block screenshots and screen recordings during a protected meeting. The control is called Prevent screen captures, and it requires Teams Premium for the meeting organizer or co-organizer. When enabled, Teams blocks built-in capture tools and most third-party capture applications on supported clients. People using unsupported clients are placed in audio-only mode instead of seeing the meeting.
This is platform-enforced protection, not a guarantee that nobody can photograph a display with another phone or camera. Use it with watermarks and copy restrictions when the meeting contains confidential material.
What “Prevent screen captures” does
Prevent screen captures is a Teams Premium meeting option. It applies to screenshots and screen recordings of protected meeting views, including the meeting window and supported Teams surfaces. The option is off by default, so an organizer must enable it for each meeting or through an applicable meeting template or policy.
- Supported clients: Teams enforces capture blocking in the clients listed below.
- Unsupported clients: Participants can join audio, but they do not receive the protected visual meeting experience.
- External cameras: Teams cannot stop someone from photographing a monitor with a phone or camera.
- No effectiveness percentage: Microsoft does not publish a success-rate statistic for this feature.
How to enable screenshot and recording prevention
- Open Calendar in Teams and select the scheduled meeting.
- Choose Meeting options.
- Expand Advanced protection.
- Turn on Prevent screen captures.
- Select Apply.
The organizer or a co-organizer with the required permissions must make this change. If you switch the setting on after the meeting has started, it takes effect only after everyone leaves and rejoins. Tell attendees to reconnect before sharing sensitive material.

Using templates, labels, and policies
For recurring or regulated meetings, administrators can apply protection through meeting templates, sensitivity labels, or organizational policies rather than relying on an organizer to remember the setting. The exact controls available depend on your Microsoft 365 configuration. Verify the resulting meeting options before the event begins.

On iOS and Android, the restriction covers more than the video stage: chat, participant lists, notes, banners, Copilot panels, and other key views are included. In meetings with more than 1,000 attendees, people joining after the first 1,000 are audio-only.
Why a Mac or browser user may hear audio but see no meeting
Audio-only behavior is intentional. Teams does not expose the protected visual content to an unsupported client. Ask the attendee to use a supported Windows, iOS, Android, or Teams Rooms on Windows client if they need to view the meeting. Do not disable protection merely to accommodate an unsupported device unless the content owner accepts the risk.
What happens when someone tries to capture the meeting?

A capture made with a built-in screenshot utility shows a black rectangle around the Teams meeting window. Pop-out meeting windows are covered as well.

Teams blocks screenshots and recordings and displays a restricted-capture message. This behavior also applies while viewing protected chat, notes, participant information, banners, or Copilot panels.
Third-party capture software
Microsoft describes the feature as blocking built-in tools and most third-party capture applications on supported clients. “Most” matters: this is not a promise that every application, driver, virtual machine, or future operating-system tool will be detected. Keep access controls and participant rules in place.

External cameras and phones
No software setting can physically prevent a person from pointing a separate camera at a screen. For highly sensitive sessions, combine capture prevention with a restricted attendee list, presenter controls, a lobby, and a clear prohibition on photography.
Teams protections that complement capture blocking
Watermarking: deterrence and attribution
Teams Premium watermarking can overlay each participant’s email address on shared content and video. Microsoft describes watermarks as a way to deter unauthorized screenshots and help attribute a leak. A watermark does not block the capture itself, so it complements rather than replaces Prevent screen captures.

Copy and forwarding restrictions
Organizers, templates, sensitivity labels, and administrator policies can restrict copying or forwarding of meeting chat, live captions, transcripts, and recap content. These controls govern text and files; Microsoft explicitly notes that they do not prevent screen capture.
A configuration for highly sensitive meetings
Microsoft documents combining several controls: watermarking, end-to-end encryption, a lobby, presenter restrictions, in-meeting-only chat, and blocked chat copying. Select only the controls your participants and workflows can support, then test the complete configuration with the same client types attendees will use.

Troubleshooting
The option is missing
- Confirm that the organizer or co-organizer has Teams Premium.
- Open the scheduled meeting’s Meeting options, not the general Teams settings.
- Check whether an administrator’s template, sensitivity label, or policy controls the available options.
- Update Teams and retry from a supported management surface.
The setting was enabled, but a participant can still see the meeting
Check the participant’s client. macOS, the web app, virtual desktops, Cloud Video Interop, and Teams Rooms on Android are unsupported and should receive audio-only access. On supported clients, have the participant leave and rejoin; a setting changed during the meeting does not apply until everyone reconnects.
A screenshot is black only around the meeting window
That is expected on Windows desktop. The black rectangle indicates that capture prevention is active. It does not indicate a display or graphics-driver failure.

That is an inherent limitation of software capture controls. Use watermarking for attribution, tighten the attendee and presenter lists, and communicate a no-photography rule for the session.
Chat or transcript text can still be copied
Enable the separate copy and forwarding restrictions for chat, live captions, transcripts, and recap content. Capture prevention and copy controls are independent settings.

A town hall behaves differently
Microsoft says screen-capture prevention no longer supports town halls. Town halls created before December 16, 2025 with the setting enabled run audio-only. Verify current event support in your tenant before relying on the feature for a town hall.
Testing before a confidential meeting
- Create a test meeting with the same protection settings.
- Join from Windows desktop, iOS, Android, and any room systems your audience uses.
- Attempt a built-in screenshot and recording on each supported client.
- Join from macOS and a browser to confirm the intended audio-only behavior.
- Check chat, captions, transcripts, recap, notes, and Copilot surfaces if they contain sensitive information.
- Confirm that watermarks show the expected participant identity.
- Repeat the test after changing the setting during a meeting, verifying that leave-and-rejoin is required.
