Choose Prettier if you need a focused formatter with broad documented language coverage or already rely on a stable Prettier workflow. Consider Biome if your JavaScript or TypeScript project would benefit from one configured toolchain for formatting, linting, and assist features. Biome reports high Prettier compatibility and a substantial speed advantage in one benchmark, but neither figure makes it a guaranteed drop-in replacement. Check your file types, lint rules, editor setup, and CI behavior before switching.
Prettier and Biome serve different roles
| Area | Prettier | Biome |
|---|---|---|
| Main role | Opinionated code formatter | Formatter, linter, and assist toolchain |
| Documented coverage highlighted by the official pages | JavaScript, TypeScript, JSX, Angular, Vue, Flow, CSS-family formats, HTML, JSON, GraphQL, Markdown, YAML, LWC, MJML, and more | JavaScript, TypeScript, JSX/TSX, JSON, HTML, CSS, and GraphQL on its home page |
| Configuration approach | Opinionated formatting; local project installation is recommended | Opinionated formatter with relatively few options; project configuration is recommended for consistent CLI and editor behavior |
| Linting | The cited documentation establishes formatting scope, not a linter replacement | Includes documented lint rules, fix behavior, and an ESLint migration workflow |
Prettier describes its process as taking code and reprinting it from scratch while accounting for line length. Its documented format list extends beyond the JavaScript ecosystem, which matters in repositories containing documents, stylesheets, templates, or data files. See Prettier’s documentation and its editor setup guide.
Biome combines formatting with linting and assist tools. Its formatter documentation describes an intentionally limited set of options, intended to reduce style debates, and its configuration guide recommends a project-level configuration so command-line and editor behavior can agree. See Biome’s formatter documentation and configuration guide.
Which files does each tool cover?
Prettier is the broader choice for mixed-format repositories
Prettier documents support for JavaScript and TypeScript alongside frameworks and formats such as Angular, Vue, Flow, CSS-family files, HTML, JSON, GraphQL, Markdown, YAML, LWC, and MJML. If your repository includes framework templates or non-code files, compare the exact extensions you use with the current supported-language list rather than assuming a JavaScript formatter choice covers them all.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Biome’s published emphasis is on web-project files
Biome’s home page highlights JavaScript, TypeScript, JSX/TSX, JSON, HTML, CSS, and GraphQL. That set can suit a web application repository, but it is not evidence that every format in Prettier’s list is supported. Make an extension-by-extension inventory, including framework-specific templates and generated files, before adopting Biome as the only formatter.
How different is Biome’s formatting from Prettier?
Biome reports 97% compatibility with Prettier on its project home page, reviewed in 2026. This is Biome’s own summary, not an independent compatibility study, and the page links to known limitations. It should not be read as a promise that every file will format identically.

For a real repository, format representative files with Biome and inspect the resulting diff. Include files with the project’s less common syntax and configuration needs, not just a typical component. Decide whether any output changes are acceptable before applying formatting repository-wide.
Does Biome replace Prettier and ESLint?
Biome provides a formatter and linter in one toolchain, so it may consolidate parts of a setup that currently uses Prettier and ESLint. But the cited documentation does not establish full parity with every ESLint plugin, rule, or typed-linting configuration. Biome’s home page reports 561 linter rules, a count that can change and does not show whether those rules match your project’s checks.

Biome documents an ESLint migration path, including commands for porting configuration, as well as suppressions during migration. Treat that as a starting point for review, not proof that existing lint behavior will be reproduced exactly. Keep any checks that the new configuration does not replace.
- Inventory the ESLint rules, plugins, typed checks, and project-specific rules your CI currently enforces.
- Follow the migration steps in Biome’s linter documentation and review generated configuration and suppressions.
- Run both tools’ checks on the same project files and examine differences in findings and fixes.
- Update editor and CI commands only after the replacement checks cover the requirements you intend to retain.
What does the speed comparison establish?
Biome reports that it was approximately 35 times faster in a benchmark on a corpus of 171,127 lines across 2,104 files, running on an Intel Core i7-1270P. This is a vendor benchmark claim shown on Biome’s home page, not an independently verified comparison or a guarantee for another repository or machine. The page displays rounded 0.00-second values for each side, so those figures do not establish absolute runtimes.

The cited Prettier documentation does not provide a comparable benchmark. If formatting time is a deciding factor, benchmark your own repository under the same conditions instead of treating the vendor’s result as a universal speed ratio.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose for your repository
Prefer Prettier when coverage and continuity matter most
- Your repository uses formats or templates outside the languages highlighted on Biome’s home page.
- Your team already has a reliable Prettier setup and no concrete reason to change it.
- You want a dedicated formatter rather than a consolidated formatter-and-linter toolchain.
Consider Biome when consolidation fits the project
- Your file types align with Biome’s documented coverage.
- You want formatting, linting, and assist features in a shared project configuration.
- You are prepared to check lint-rule coverage and review formatting or migration diffs.
For a new project, make the setup reproducible
Choose based on the project’s file types, linting requirements, editor support, configuration preferences, and team familiarity. Prettier recommends installing it locally in the project; Biome recommends project-level configuration. Pin the tool version and make formatting checks reproducible in CI. For either choice, configure one formatter per language so editor and CI do not apply competing rules.

Is switching from Prettier worth it?
For an established repository, switch only when Biome’s integrated toolchain or another specific repository need outweighs the cost of validating coverage, formatting differences, lint behavior, and editor and CI configuration. The 97% compatibility and approximately 35x benchmark figures are useful signals to investigate, not sufficient reasons on their own to replace a working setup.
