Press release distribution is a paid delivery service, not a guarantee of news coverage. In 2026, published prices range from $50–$149 per release for a pay-as-you-go service, $250 for one regional circuit, and $475 starting for 400 words on a U.S. local circuit. The right choice depends on where your audience is, whether you need named-journalist outreach or automated syndication, how quickly the release must move, and what evidence you need afterward. Distribution can improve discoverability, but no reputable provider can promise backlinks, rankings, pickup or traffic.
What press release distribution includes
“Distribution” describes several different products that are often bundled under one price. Before comparing providers, identify the delivery route you actually need:

- Targeted journalist delivery: A release is sent to named journalists and editors selected by beat, publication type, geography and job role.
- Newsroom-terminal delivery: The release enters editorial systems used by newsrooms, trade publications or financial desks.
- Online syndication: The text is published across a network of websites and may be submitted to search and news services.
- Disclosure or investor distribution: A financial-market circuit is used for announcements subject to exchange or regulatory requirements.
- Bundled production: Formatting, editorial review, translation, multimedia handling, analytics and social tools are added to delivery.
A large outlet count does not prove that a journalist read the release or that a publication produced an independent article. Ask the seller to separate each route and list the exact circuit, geography, filters and report you will receive.

Compare the landed cost, not the headline number. A low base rate can become expensive after adding images, video, translation, extra words, financial tables, correction fees or a wider circuit. Confirm whether taxes, rush handling and post-publication changes are included.
What a higher price can buy
Business Wire says its starting package includes 400 words, unlimited hyperlinks, secure submission and distribution, a linked logo, rich-text formatting, financial tables, detailed analytics, 24/7 support, expert editorial review, customized callout text and social-sharing tools. Those are product features, not evidence that every release will receive editorial coverage.
GlobeNewswire says customers can select global, local, trade, financial-market or online-only distribution; target geography, industry, media type and language; and order professional translation. Its FAQ also says releases are formatted with structured metadata, rich content and relevant keywords for search and AI discoverability. Treat those as stated capabilities and verify the current package in your quote.

Targeted sends
A targeted send is closest to traditional media relations. Presswire describes selecting journalists and editors by editorial beat, publication type, geography and role, then sending after editorial review. This can put a relevant announcement in an editor’s inbox, but it is still a pitch or information source, not a commissioned story. Your own follow-up, spokesperson availability and news value determine whether anyone responds.

Newsroom feeds
A newsroom-terminal feed places the release inside systems where editors monitor incoming material. Presswire’s optional PA MEDIAPOINT delivery is described for UK and European newsrooms. Ask for the countries and publication categories covered; “terminal delivery” does not mean every newsroom subscribes to or uses the feed.
Online syndication
Syndication republishes the release across a network of sites. Presswire describes an add-on reaching more than 400 sites, including the Associated Press network and USA Today, with Google News placement. This can create many copies of the same text, while offering little evidence of independent reporting. Request a sample list or post-distribution report and check whether the count refers to domains, pages, feeds or estimated impressions.
Financial and regulatory circuits
If an announcement is subject to exchange, securities-law or investor-relations rules, a general publicity circuit may not satisfy the required disclosure workflow. Confirm the approved wire, filing sequence, release time, time-zone handling and correction process with your legal, finance or exchange advisers before scheduling.

Timing depends on review, approvals, the requested circuit and the audience’s working hours. Presswire states: “We aim to send a release within an hour of receiving it, once it has passed review.” That is an operating target, not a promise that an unapproved or non-compliant release will publish in an hour. Presswire accepts embargoes and requested future dates and times.

GlobeNewswire’s guidance is that ideal timing depends on the audience and announcement type, with regular weekday business hours as a general guideline. A global announcement may require coordination across time zones; a financial disclosure may have a mandated release window.
- Prepare the final text and assets. Include the headline, dateline, body, boilerplate, contact details, links and approved images or tables.
- Submit for editorial review. Allow time for questions, style changes, validation and rejection of unsupported claims.
- Collect internal approvals. Coordinate executives, legal, investor relations, partners and any translated versions.
- Set the release time or embargo. Specify the time zone and confirm how the provider interprets the requested time.
- Check the live result. Verify headline, links, images, quotes and contact information immediately after publication.
- Archive the report. Save delivery records, URLs, timestamps and analytics for your internal record.
For a time-sensitive launch, submit earlier than the stated send target. Build in review time, approval delays, translation, weekend or holiday coverage and any regulatory coordination.
What does “reach” actually mean?
Reach is not one standardized metric. A provider may use the word for any of the following:
- Number of named journalists or editors contacted.
- Number of newsroom terminals or financial feeds receiving the release.
- Number of websites or pages where syndicated text appears.
- Potential audience, estimated impressions or social-sharing counts.
- Search presentation, such as inclusion in Google News.
- Delivery to a defined industry, language or geographic circuit.
Before buying, request the exact target criteria: geography, industry filters, media types, languages, named outlets, investor feeds and syndication partners. Ask for a sample analytics report that distinguishes successful delivery from publication, search visibility and social activity. Do not treat a high outlet count as earned editorial coverage.

Presswire publishes a customer statement from Chris Newman, Marketing Communications Manager at telent, who said the service reached editors’ desks at key UK trade publications with one push. That is a customer testimonial, not an independent pickup-rate or conversion study.
Is press release distribution good for SEO?
Distribution can make a news announcement easier to discover, quote or reference, but it is not a dependable ranking tactic. PR Newswire’s 2024 distribution ebook says established wires have built-in audiences and high site authority, and that a wire version can outrank a company’s own copy. The same ebook says search engines became more sophisticated and that “achieving SEO through links alone stopped working.”
Use a release to document a genuine event and make accurate information available to journalists, customers and searchers. Do not promise a specific number of backlinks, a ranking lift, indexing, referral traffic or AI-search visibility. Syndicated copies may be filtered, canonicalized, de-ranked or removed; links may be nofollowed or ignored. Measure outcomes that matter to the announcement, such as qualified inquiries, journalist responses, confirmed coverage, investor awareness or attendance, rather than raw URL counts.

When is free distribution worth it?
Free channels can be sensible when your goal is simply to publish an announcement on your own newsroom, website, social accounts or email list and you already have relevant contacts. They are less useful when you need a verified newsroom circuit, a financial disclosure feed, translation, formal analytics or time-critical review.
Evaluate a free offer by asking:
- Is there human editorial review or only an upload form?
- Are journalists actually targeted, and can you see the criteria?
- Are links, images, corrections and embargoes supported?
- Will you receive a delivery report rather than a marketing claim?
- Who owns the published copy, and can it be corrected or removed?
- Does the service use your information for marketing or resell it?
A free post that reaches no relevant audience is not cheaper than a focused campaign built around a small, well-matched list.
How to choose a distribution service
Score each quote against the announcement, not against the provider’s biggest advertised network.

- International launch: Confirm language coverage, local timing and whether translation is human and professionally reviewed.
- Regulated or investor news: Confirm the required disclosure wire and approval chain before considering general publicity distribution.
Preparing a release that survives review
- State the news in the first paragraph and include a specific date, location and organization.
- Use attributable quotes from people available for follow-up.
- Separate verified facts from projections, awards, market-size claims and superlatives.
- Provide a short company boilerplate and a working media contact.
- Test every URL, downloadable asset and tracking destination.
- Supply image credits, captions, logos and usage permissions.
- Check names, titles, figures, currencies and time zones with the approving owner.
- Keep a final approved copy so syndicated versions can be compared with the source.
Common failure modes and fixes
The release misses the deadline
Review queues, incomplete approvals, time-zone confusion or a failed payment can delay publication. Submit earlier, obtain written confirmation of the scheduled time and keep a direct support contact.
The report shows many sites but no coverage
That usually indicates syndication rather than independent reporting. Ask which placements were automated, which journalists were contacted and whether any outlet produced an original story.
Links or images are missing
Check the provider’s word, format and file-size rules before submission. Verify the live page and request a correction promptly; do not assume every syndicated copy can be edited.
The provider rejects the copy
Editorial review may flag unverifiable claims, advertising language, duplicate content, legal risk or an unsuitable audience. Rewrite the claim with a source, attribution or measurable fact and resubmit with enough time before the desired release window.
