To follow the Premier League title race, check the official table for points and matches played, then use the league’s fixture and results listings to see what each contender has played and what comes next. Points determine the champion; goal difference and other tie-breakers separate clubs level on points. Always check the date and matchweek on a standings snapshot, and verify fixture details close to kickoff because schedules can change.
How the Premier League table works
The Premier League has 20 clubs. Each plays every other club home and away, making 380 matches in a season. A win earns three points, a draw earns one and a defeat earns none. The club with the most points at the end of the season wins the title. The Premier League’s format explainer sets out the competition structure.

The league’s official table shows more than position and points. Its columns include matches played, wins, draws, losses, goals for and against, goal difference, form and the next match. Read those figures together rather than treating rank as the whole story.
Why matches played matters
If two contenders have different numbers of matches played, their points totals are not directly comparable without that context. A club with a game in hand has an opportunity to gain points, not points already earned; it could win, draw or lose. Compare each club’s points and matches played, then consider the fixtures still to come.

What goal difference means
Goal difference is goals scored minus goals conceded. For example, a team with 20 goals scored and 8 conceded has a goal difference of +12. It is the first tie-breaker after points, so a club lower in the table on goal difference can still be level on points with the club above it.
How tied clubs are ranked
When clubs finish level on points, the Premier League applies these criteria in order:
- Goal difference.
- Goals scored.
- Points won in matches between the tied clubs.
- Away goals scored in those head-to-head matches.
If title contenders remain inseparable after those criteria, they may play a one-off match at a neutral venue to decide the champion. In an explainer dated 14 May 2026, the league said no such playoff had occurred in its history. See the league’s published tie-break rules for the full explanation.

Where to check fixtures and results
Use the Premier League’s official fixtures and results listing for match information, and its table for the current standings. The league also offers an official app and says supporters can download the 2026/27 fixtures to a mobile device. A downloaded schedule is convenient for planning, but it is not a substitute for checking the current listing: dates and kickoff times can change as broadcast and competition scheduling develops.
Check the 2026/27 schedule carefully
The 2026/27 season is scheduled to begin on Friday 21 August 2026 and end on Sunday 30 May 2027. The schedule contains 380 fixtures, with 33 weekend rounds and five midweek match rounds. All matches on the final day are scheduled to kick off simultaneously. These are announced schedule details, not a guarantee that every kickoff time will remain unchanged. The league’s fixture guide and season fixture announcement describe the schedule and changes.
For changes through the end of the calendar year, the league said it aimed to give supporters at least six weeks’ notice; from January to the end of the season, it described an aim of five weeks’ notice. It also warned that later changes can arise when clubs progress in European competitions. Check the current official listing for the match’s date, kickoff time and venue before making plans.

How to read a standings snapshot
A standings figure is meaningful only with its date and matchweek. For example, the Premier League’s Matchweek 5 report showed Manchester City on 15 points and Arsenal on 12 after five matches, as of 19 September 2026. That is a dated snapshot, not the table for 4 October 2026. Use the live table for current standings rather than relying on an older graphic or report.

For a useful comparison, note each contender’s points, games played, goal difference and remaining fixtures, with the date of the table beside the figures.
Following matches beyond the table
The official website and app are useful for standings, fixtures and results. Live broadcast or audio coverage can add match-by-match context, but access depends on territory and current rights. For UK coverage, the league’s 2026/27 schedule announcement names Sky Sports and TNT Sports for selected matches, and BBC Radio 5 Live and talkSPORT for audio commentary. Check the relevant broadcaster’s current schedule and local availability before relying on a listing.
