Opta Analyst also reported that Liverpool had drawn three of their first five matches. Its author Oliver Hopkins wrote on September 21, “There is, of course, still a long way to go.” That is the right scale of confidence for a five-game sample.
How to judge form without overreading five games
Begin with the league table, but do not stop at points. Compare goal difference, goals scored and conceded, and the opponents faced. A run of wins against a particular mix of teams may tell a different story from the same points earned against leading clubs. Five matches can reveal a start; they cannot establish that a team will maintain it across a full season.

Where comparable performance data are available, use them alongside results and identify the provider and time period. For example, Opta Analyst reported that Manchester United had 113 total shots and 182 touches in the opposition box after five matches—the league-leading totals at that point—yet United had only five points. Those numbers illustrate why chance creation and results can diverge; they do not establish a United title challenge.
- Results: points, wins, draws and losses show what a team has banked.
- Goal balance: goals for and against, plus goal difference, add context to the points tally.
- Opponent sequence: note who a club has played before describing its run as especially strong or weak.
- Underlying indicators: use only clearly attributed figures with a stated sample period, and treat them as context rather than a replacement for results.
- Forecasts: keep model probabilities separate from standings; they depend on assumptions and change as more matches are played.
How to compare squad depth
Squad depth is about whether a team can cover important roles without losing too much of its playing approach—not the raw number of names in its squad. Assess likely replacements in high-impact positions and distinguish confirmed absences from speculation. Injuries, suspensions and returning players can quickly change the picture.
Opta Analyst’s August 14 preseason preview discussed William Saliba’s absence as a concern for Arsenal, changes in Manchester City’s midfield, and Liverpool’s defensive additions and Mohamed Salah’s departure. Those were preseason observations, not a verified October availability report or current depth chart. They should not be treated as current injury or selection information.

- Check the club or league announcement for whether a player is unavailable, suspended or returning.
- Identify who can cover the role, rather than assuming that any substitute is an equivalent replacement.
- Consider whether the cover preserves the team’s structure and style, especially across a congested stretch.
- Reassess after transfers, injuries and tactical changes; an earlier depth assessment can become obsolete.
How to compare upcoming fixtures
For an October assessment, the useful question is which team has the more demanding upcoming fixture run—not which has the easiest “run-in,” a term that usually refers to the closing stretch of the season. Start with the official Premier League fixture list, then account for European matches, domestic cups and international breaks.
- List each club’s scheduled league opponents and match dates from the official Premier League site.
- Add European and domestic-cup matches, and mark international breaks or known rescheduling.
- Compare rest between matches, away stretches and clusters of games against strong opponents.
- State the period and method used before calling one calendar harder or easier; fixture difficulty shifts as matches are played and dates change.
The available sources do not establish a consistent fixture-difficulty ranking for all contenders. Without a stated method and complete current schedules, a confident league-wide label such as “easiest run” would overstate what is known.

A new manager or substantial squad turnover adds uncertainty because the team may still be adapting. Opta Analyst’s preseason assessment discussed management changes at several large clubs and noted that European commitments affect planning for some teams. That is useful context for interpreting readiness and rotation demands, not proof that a club will succeed or fail.

European and cup matches can make replacement quality more consequential, but fixture volume alone does not show how a team will cope. Consider rest intervals, travel, role coverage and confirmed availability together, then update the assessment as the calendar and squad change.

What this comparison can—and cannot—say
At the five-match cutoff, City were the standings leader, while Arsenal had the highest title estimate in Opta Analyst’s model. Liverpool were a more distant third in that model. Brighton and Brentford also had strong starts, but the cited model figures do not place them among its top three estimates.
