Short answer: A platform tax form is not a complete answer to how your event-contract activity is taxed. Kalshi says it supports deposits and withdrawals in all 50 states, but that does not mean every market may be traded from every state. Your actual obligations and access depend on the contract, platform rules, location checks, and the facts of your transactions.
The most reliable approach is to save the platform’s transaction records, read the current account terms before depositing, and ask a qualified tax professional to classify your activity. The IRS digital-asset guidance discussed below should not be treated as a ruling that every prediction-market contract is a digital asset.

What tax forms might a prediction-market user receive?
Kalshi’s Help Center article published June 22, 2026 describes several forms it may issue when a user reaches applicable IRS reporting thresholds. The forms relate to particular types of payments or transfers; receiving one does not, by itself, settle the tax character of ordinary event-contract positions.

| Form | Kalshi’s stated use | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 1099-INT | Interest payments | Applies to qualifying interest, not automatically to every contract result. |
| 1099-MISC | Credits or rewards | Concerns the qualifying credit or reward described by the platform. |
| 1099-B | Certain broker-transaction proceeds involving crypto transfers | The description is tied to the type of transaction; it is not a blanket classification of event contracts. |
| 1099-DA | Digital-asset transaction reporting through ZeroHash | Whether a particular event-contract transaction is a digital-asset transaction remains a separate tax question. |
Kalshi also describes a year-segmented profit-and-loss statement that is refreshed monthly. Its calculation uses FIFO (first in, first out). That tells you how the platform organizes its own report; it does not prove that FIFO is the legally required method for your return or that the statement contains every adjustment your tax situation requires.

The Help Center expressly warns: “This information and the information included in the Profit and Loss statement are not tax advice, and Kalshi cannot give members advice on their taxes.” Treat the statement as source data for your records, not as a completed tax filing.
Are prediction-market winnings taxable?
What the available IRS guidance actually says
IRS guidance for digital-asset transactions says taxpayers must report income, gains, and losses from digital-asset transactions even when they do not receive Form 1099-DA. That instruction is important for a person whose activity is within the digital-asset rules, but it does not establish that every U.S. event contract offered by a prediction market is a digital asset.
The reviewed IRS material does not directly classify ordinary event-contract gains and losses, identify one federal form that applies to every user, or declare that all proceeds are capital gains. It also does not support a blanket statement that all such proceeds are gambling winnings. The correct treatment can depend on the contract, settlement, account activity, residence, and other facts.

How to handle an unresolved classification
- Download the platform records. Keep fills, settlements, open and closed positions, deposits, withdrawals, fees, credits, rewards, and any annual or monthly profit-and-loss statements.
- Separate activity by calendar year. Preserve the original transaction dates and the date a contract settled; do not rely only on a current account balance.
- Match every tax form to the underlying entries. A 1099 may cover interest, a reward, a broker transaction, or a digital-asset transfer rather than the entire account.
- Ask a tax professional a narrowly framed question. Provide the contract terms, settlement records, forms, and your location. Ask which income character and federal and state forms apply to your specific activity.
- Keep a written explanation of the position taken. If the classification is uncertain, retain the professional’s advice and the records used to reach the filing position.
Do not omit income merely because a form was not issued. Conversely, do not copy the platform’s FIFO result into a return without confirming that the method and classification fit your circumstances.

How Kalshi’s FIFO and profit-and-loss display should be read
FIFO assigns earlier units first when the platform calculates its displayed results. Kalshi says its year-segmented trading information is refreshed monthly, so a dashboard number can change as additional trades settle or the monthly refresh occurs.
That display is useful for reconciling your account, but it has limits:
- It is a platform calculation, not an IRS determination.
- It may not answer how a tax professional should classify an event-contract result.
- It may not include facts outside the platform, such as activity on another service or your broader digital-asset records.
- A monthly refresh is not the same as a final, government-issued tax statement.
Save a copy of each year’s statement after it becomes available and retain the underlying trade export. If a later revision changes a figure, you can show what changed and why.

What Kalshi publicly claims
In a platform-authored article published in 2025, Kalshi says it supports deposits and withdrawals in all 50 states. That is a statement about the platform’s payment availability. It is not a legal conclusion that every contract may be traded from every state, and it does not establish a universal withdrawal method, fee schedule, or processing time.
A safe withdrawal procedure
Labels and payment options can change, so use the current controls shown inside your verified account rather than relying on an old screenshot.
- Confirm your location and account status. Complete any identity or address checks requested by the platform. A failed location check can block a request even when withdrawals are generally supported.
- Check that funds are withdrawable. Review whether money is settled, tied to an open contract, subject to a temporary hold, or reserved for a pending deposit.
- Open the account’s withdrawal or cash-out screen. Read the displayed method, minimum, fee, estimated timing, and any third-party processor disclosure before confirming.
- Verify destination details. Check the account or payment details character by character. An incorrect destination can create a recovery problem that the platform cannot immediately reverse.
- Submit and save the confirmation. Keep the request ID, amount, date, and status. Your bank or payment provider may show a separate pending period.
- Reconcile the account afterward. Confirm that the platform balance, withdrawal record, and receiving account agree. Record any fee separately for your tax professional.
The reviewed sources do not establish a current cross-platform list of withdrawal rails, fees, limits, or processing times. Those details are account-specific and can change with payment providers, verification status, and local rules.
If a withdrawal fails or is delayed
- Pending status: Check whether the platform identifies a review, settlement, or bank-processing hold; do not submit repeated requests until you know whether the first one is still active.
- Location error: Recheck the address and location information on the account and consult the current restriction notice.
- Method unavailable: Review the options currently displayed rather than assuming a method offered to another user is available to you.
- Amount mismatch: Compare the requested amount with settled cash, open positions, fees, and any minimum or maximum shown at confirmation.
- Missing funds after completion: Use the saved confirmation and request ID with the platform and, separately, the receiving institution.
Can I use a prediction market in my state?
Why “withdrawal available” and “trading permitted” are different
A platform can support a payment transaction from a state while restricting particular markets or trading activity there. Access may depend on the user’s physical location, the market, the account type, and changes in law or platform policy.

That language makes the current terms and the platform’s location checks more important than a general statement about deposits or withdrawals.

Checking access before depositing
- Read the platform’s current member agreement and geographic-restrictions page.
- Run the location check when prompted, using your actual place of access rather than a mailing address alone.
- Search the specific market’s information for any contract-level restriction.
- Confirm that your state has not adopted a new rule, order, or enforcement position affecting the service.
- Save the terms and restriction notice that applied on the date you deposited or traded.
Polymarket’s official FAQ collection includes a Geographic Restrictions topic, but the reviewed material does not provide a verified, current U.S. state-by-state table. Do not infer availability in your state from a friend’s account, an old article, or the fact that a website loads.

The available evidence does not support ranking platforms by these features. Instead, compare the following questions for the exact market and location you intend to use.
| Comparison question | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Can you access the specific market? | Live location check, market-level notice, and current terms | General website access does not prove trading permission. |
| What records are supplied? | Trade export, settlement history, monthly or annual P&L, and any 1099 forms | A form may cover only one payment category. |
| How is P&L calculated? | Method stated by the platform, such as FIFO, and refresh schedule | The platform’s method may not answer your legal tax question. |
| How does withdrawal work? | Methods, minimums, third-party charges, limits, holds, and timing shown in your account | These details can differ by user and change over time. |
| Who handles tax questions? | Whether the platform expressly disclaims tax advice | You may need an independent professional for classification and filing. |
Recordkeeping checklist for tax season
- Export every trade and settlement, including canceled or expired positions where shown.
- Keep deposit and withdrawal confirmations with dates, amounts, and any displayed fees.
- Save monthly P&L snapshots and the final year-segmented statement.
- Retain every tax form, including corrected forms if one is later issued.
- Record your state and country of physical access for transactions where location matters.
- Keep copies of the terms and geographic notices in effect when you traded.
- Do not combine event-contract records with unrelated crypto activity without labeling each transaction type.
State litigation, platform access, payment rails, tax forms, and fees are volatile. Recheck the platform’s live terms and IRS instructions before filing for the relevant year, especially if your account uses a third-party digital-asset processor.
Bottom line
Prediction-market tax treatment is not resolved by the presence or absence of a 1099. Kalshi’s forms and FIFO statement can organize account data, while IRS digital-asset guidance supplies reporting instructions for digital assets without deciding that every event contract fits that category. Kalshi’s all-50-states withdrawal statement should likewise be read as a payment-availability claim, not proof that every market is legal or available in every state. Verify the specific market and location, preserve complete records, and obtain individualized tax advice before filing.
