If PowerWash Simulator crashes at startup, refuses to open, shows a black screen, or never finishes loading on Windows, begin with the reversible fixes: verify the game files, close overlays and monitoring utilities, update Windows and your graphics driver, and test without extra peripherals. Check the hardware requirements before attempting a reinstall. Only reset preferences or delete game data after protecting your saves.
FuturLab’s PC Crash Master Troubleshooting Guide, modified February 12, 2026, describes PC crashes as potentially arising from “hardware conflicts to software settings.” The sequence below follows that guidance and separates low-risk repairs from steps that can remove progress.

First confirm that these instructions match your setup
The documented paths and runtime repairs below apply to the Windows PC edition. They are not universal fixes for PlayStation, Xbox console, or Nintendo Switch versions. If you play on a console, skip the Windows file paths, DirectX repair, and MsInfo export; use the support path for your exact console and game version instead.
PowerWash Simulator was released on July 14, 2022. A later patch can leave a damaged or incomplete local file, but the same symptoms can also come from drivers, overlays, security software, USB devices, or settings. Confirm the following requirements before spending time on software repairs.

These are FuturLab’s published figures for 2026. A computer that only just meets the minimum can have reduced performance and a poorer multiplayer experience; hardware below the minimum cannot be expected to run the game correctly.

1. Verify or repair the installed files
Corrupted or missing files are the best first target because a launcher check does not require changing your saves. Close the game completely, then run the repair function in the launcher that owns your copy.
Xbox app for Windows
- Open the Xbox app and select My Library.
- Select PowerWash Simulator, then select More options (…) → Manage.
- Open the Files tab and choose Verify and repair.
- Wait for the scan and any download to finish before launching again.
Steam or Epic
Use the launcher’s built-in file-verification or file-repair command for the game. The wording and location differ between Steam and Epic, so allow the process to complete rather than stopping at a quick integrity result. If the launcher reports that files were reacquired, restart the launcher and test the game before changing any preferences.

Temporarily disable software that injects an overlay or monitors the GPU. FuturLab specifically lists Steam and Discord overlays, GeForce Experience, MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, and similar monitoring utilities as possible conflict points.

- Turn off each overlay in its own application, not only the game’s overlay toggle.
- Exit monitoring and overclocking tools completely from the notification area or Task Manager.
- Launch PowerWash Simulator once with those programs closed. If it starts, re-enable tools one at a time to identify the conflict.
This is a diagnostic test, not a requirement to uninstall anything. Restore a tool only after confirming that the game can start without it.
3. Update Windows, the graphics driver, and permissions
An outdated platform component or driver can prevent a game from creating its graphics device. Apply current Windows updates and the latest driver offered for your graphics hardware, then restart the computer.
- Install pending Windows updates and reboot, even if Windows does not immediately request a restart.
- Install the current driver for your GPU from its manufacturer’s supported update channel.
- Right-click the game executable or its launcher and try Run as administrator for a test launch.
- Add the launcher and the game executable to your firewall and antivirus exceptions if security software is blocking them. Use the security product’s own allow-list rather than disabling protection permanently.
If an administrator launch works but a normal launch fails, keep the exception and investigate the account or security policy instead of repeatedly running every game with elevated rights.
4. Test without unnecessary displays and USB devices
Disconnect hardware that the game does not need for a basic launch. FuturLab identifies second monitors, controllers, racing wheels, VR headsets, USB hubs, and other peripherals as potential conflicts.

- Shut down the game and the launcher.
- Leave one monitor connected, preferably the display used as the primary Windows screen.
- Unplug controllers, wheels, VR equipment, USB hubs, and other nonessential devices.
- Start the game with only the keyboard and mouse connected.
- Reconnect devices individually after a successful launch to find the one that changes the result.
This test is especially useful when the game began failing after a device, driver, or VR-software change.
5. Repair DirectX and Visual C++ when loading stays black
An endless black loading screen, or an error naming d3dx9_43.dll, d3d11.dll, or MSVCR100.dll, points to runtime components rather than a save file. FuturLab recommends repairing the DirectX End-User Runtime and the Visual C++ Redistributable.
- Close PowerWash Simulator and its launcher.
- Use Windows’ installed-app or repair options for the DirectX End-User Runtime and Visual C++ Redistributable components.
- Allow each repair to finish, then restart Windows.
- Launch the game again before deleting preferences or reinstalling.
Do not download individual DLL files from unofficial “DLL fix” sites. Repairing the supported runtime package addresses the component as a whole and avoids replacing one file with an unsafe copy.

6. Reset preferences only when settings are implicated
If the crash began after changing controls, display options, or another in-game setting, reset the preferences file rather than deleting the entire save directory. Exit the game first, then open:

Delete the file named futurplayerprefs, then start the game. This resets key bindings and in-game settings, so you will need to configure them again. It is a targeted settings reset; do not remove the surrounding save folders as part of this step.
7. Reinstall only after protecting your saves
A reinstall is a last resort. It becomes more invasive if you also remove the FuturLab data folder, because that location can contain save data and preferences. Back up your progress before touching it.

- Copy the
SaveDatafolder from the FuturLab LocalLow location to another drive or a clearly named backup folder. Keep the copy until the repaired installation has been tested. - Uninstall PowerWash Simulator through the launcher or Windows.
- If FuturLab support has instructed you to remove the local data, delete
C:UsersUserNameAppDataLocalLowFuturLab, replacingUserNamewith your Windows account name. This is the step with the greatest potential to remove local progress. - Reinstall the base game and any owned DLC, allow all downloads to finish, and launch once before restoring backed-up data.
If the game works after reinstalling, restore only the backed-up save data that support or your launcher workflow requires. Keeping the untouched backup gives you a recovery option if the original data was the cause.

8. Give support useful diagnostics when the crash persists
If verification, conflict testing, runtime repair, and a protected reinstall do not resolve the problem, open a FuturLab support ticket. Include the exact platform, Windows version, launcher, GPU model, and the symptom you observed (startup crash, black screen, or endless loading).
Export an MsInfo report on Windows
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
msinfo32and press Enter. - In the System Information window, choose File → Export.
- Save the report as
msinfo.txt. - Wait for the export progress bar to finish before attaching the file to the ticket.
An MsInfo export gives support a consistent view of hardware, drivers, and Windows configuration. Describe which steps changed the behavior and attach any exact DLL or launcher error text rather than paraphrasing it.
What to do when the problem began after an update
Do not jump straight to deleting saves because an update-related failure often has a lower-risk explanation. First let the launcher verify the newly installed files, then test with overlays, monitoring tools, and extra peripherals closed. Confirm that Windows and the GPU driver are current, and capture the first error message you see. If the launcher repeatedly reacquires the same files or the game still fails after runtime repair, document that pattern for FuturLab support before removing LocalLow data.
