Microsoft’s PowerToys Run is a keyboard-first launcher for opening apps, finding files, calculating answers, and running commands. Press Alt+Space by default, then type what you need. It can make Windows Search feel easier to use, but its file-search plugin relies on the Windows Search index, so it does not automatically replace the indexing system behind Windows Search.
What PowerToys Run does
Microsoft describes PowerToys Run as a quick launcher for applications, files, calculator functions, and system commands. It also offers plugins for tasks such as finding running processes, converting units, calculating hashes, generating GUIDs, getting date and time information, and opening web pages or searches.

Rather than opening the Start menu and navigating through menus, you invoke Run with a shortcut and enter a query. Results depend on the query and enabled plugins; plugin activation keywords can narrow a search to a particular kind of result.

- Install Microsoft PowerToys and open its settings.
- Select PowerToys Run in the settings sidebar and make sure the utility is enabled.
- Press Alt+Space, the default activation shortcut, and type a query.
- If that shortcut conflicts with another app or does not suit your workflow, change it in the PowerToys Run settings.
PowerToys must be running in the background for the shortcut to work. Microsoft lists installation options including GitHub, Microsoft Store, WinGet, Chocolatey, and Scoop. Its current requirements are Windows 11 or Windows 10 version 2004 (20H1, build 19041) or later, on a 64-bit x64 or ARM64 processor. The installer bootstrapper installs the required Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime. See Microsoft’s PowerToys installation instructions for setup details.

Can PowerToys Run search files?
Yes. Run’s Windows Search plugin searches files and folders indexed by the Windows Search Index service. That makes it useful as a launcher-style way to reach indexed items, but it does not mean every file on every drive will appear automatically.
If expected files are missing, check Windows indexing coverage and exclusions. Microsoft says Run can show a warning when indexing settings do not cover all drives and direct you to Windows Searching settings. There, you can enable Enhanced mode, exclude paths, or open advanced indexing settings. The right setting depends on which locations you want Windows to search.

Does it replace Windows Search?
It can replace the search interface you prefer for many quick tasks, but not necessarily the search service underneath. Run’s file-search plugin depends on the Windows Search index, so changing how you launch a search does not by itself change which folders Windows indexes.

PowerToys Run or Command Palette?
Microsoft’s current Run documentation points to Command Palette as Run’s evolution. Both are PowerToys utilities, but their documented emphasis and default shortcuts differ. Which fits better depends on the feature you want and what is available in your installed PowerToys version.

Microsoft’s Command Palette overview documents its broader palette concept and says it must be enabled and running in the background. The default shortcut is different from Run’s, so check which utility is enabled before troubleshooting a shortcut. Microsoft’s descriptions do not establish that one is universally better.

Which should you use?
- Choose Run if you want its familiar quick-launch workflow and plugins such as calculator, unit conversion, or indexed file search.
- Try Command Palette if you want a palette for apps, commands, web searches, files, and Windows tools, or prefer its compact-search-box option.
- Check your installed version if a feature or setting described in Microsoft’s documentation is not present in your PowerToys interface.
