Windows Snap Layouts is better when you want a quick, built-in picker and its presets already match how you work. Neither is a universal performance winner: Microsoft’s documentation describes capabilities and limitations, not a head-to-head speed or productivity test.
What you are choosing between
Both tools place application windows into defined regions, but they solve different problems. Windows Snap Layouts is part of Windows and presents a small set of predetermined arrangements. FancyZones is a utility in Microsoft PowerToys that lets you design the regions yourself and then reuse them.

That distinction matters more on an ultrawide display than on a conventional 16:9 screen. A wide panel can show a document, browser, terminal, chat window and reference material simultaneously, but the default proportions may not suit all of those windows. The useful question is therefore not which tool is “faster,” but whether the available geometry and activation method fit your work.

How FancyZones fits an ultrawide desk
Grid layouts for repeatable columns
FancyZones’ editor can target a selected monitor and create a Grid layout. A new Grid starts with three columns, then lets you split or merge zones and adjust the gutters between them. On an ultrawide, that makes it practical to build, for example, a broad primary column with two narrower side columns, or four equal regions for lightweight applications.
Grid layouts are intended to resize with different screen sizes. That is useful if a laptop is sometimes connected to a dock or if Windows changes the usable area because of taskbars, scaling or a monitor swap. Check the result after a display change rather than assuming every application will preserve identical pixel dimensions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCanvas layouts for irregular or overlapping regions
Canvas layouts let you move and resize zones freely. Zones can overlap, so a Canvas is suitable when the left side of an ultrawide needs a large writing area while a smaller reference zone floats over part of it. This is more flexible than a fixed column grid, but it also requires more deliberate design: overlapping targets can make it less obvious where a dragged window will land.
Several layouts and quick switching
You can save custom layouts and assign quick-switch shortcuts. That supports distinct modes such as “coding,” “editing” and “meeting” without rebuilding the geometry each time. Give each mode a clear name and keep the number of layouts manageable; otherwise remembering which hotkey activates which arrangement becomes its own task.

How windows enter a zone
By default, FancyZones asks you to hold Shift while dragging a window to activate the zone overlay. Its settings can change that activation behavior. For keyboard users, an option can override Windows’ Windows+Arrow snapping so the arrows move windows through your FancyZones regions. Enable that override only if the custom behavior is worth changing a shortcut you already use.
Using more than one adjacent zone
FancyZones can snap one window across multiple adjacent zones. That is useful when a single application needs a wider span temporarily—for example, a spreadsheet or timeline—without deleting the underlying layout. The zones must be adjacent, and the resulting span follows the geometry you created.
How Windows Snap Layouts works
Opening the layout picker
Windows provides a visual Snap Layouts flyout. Hover over a window’s maximize or restore button to open it, or press Windows+Z. The arrangements shown are predetermined, and Microsoft notes that the available choices depend partly on display size. An ultrawide may therefore show a different set of arrangements from a smaller screen.
After you choose a region, Snap Assist helps fill the remaining positions. Windows presents other open windows so you can select what belongs in the empty areas, reducing the number of individual drag operations needed to build a group.
Dragging to the top and using the Snap bar
Windows also provides a Snap bar when you drag a window to the top of the screen. This gives you another visual route to the same built-in arrangements, particularly useful when the maximize-button flyout is hard to reach or you are already moving a window with the mouse.

Returning to a saved arrangement
Snap groups let Windows remember a set of snapped windows. Microsoft Support documents restoring those groups from taskbar hover, Task View or Alt+Tab. This is a different model from FancyZones’ layout hotkeys: Windows remembers the grouped windows and their snapped positions, while FancyZones emphasizes reusable geometry that you can apply to incoming windows.
Windows settings that affect the experience
Snap Layouts’ native flyout can be disabled in Windows Multitasking settings. Snap Assist, the Snap bar and Snap groups have separately described settings, so a missing behavior may be a configuration choice rather than a display limitation. If the flyout never appears, first check the Multitasking page before changing monitor drivers or reinstalling software.
Setting up FancyZones on an ultrawide
- Install Microsoft PowerToys, which Microsoft describes as free and open source. The official overview is available at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/powertoys/.
- Open PowerToys Settings and select FancyZones. Launch the layout editor and select the ultrawide monitor you want to configure.
- Choose Grid when you want structured rows and columns. Start from the three-column default, then split or merge zones and adjust gutters until the proportions match your applications.
- Choose Canvas when zones need independent sizes, unusual placement or overlap. Drag each zone and resize it directly in the editor.
- Save the layout with a descriptive name. Assign a quick-switch hotkey if you plan to use more than one arrangement.
- Test the layout with the applications you actually use. Hold Shift while dragging a window under the default activation behavior, then release it over the intended zone.
- Decide whether to enable the keyboard override. If enabled, FancyZones can take over Windows+Arrow snapping; leave it off when preserving the standard Windows shortcuts is more important.
- If a window needs more room, snap it across multiple adjacent zones rather than redesigning the layout.
FancyZones’ complete documentation, including editor and behavior settings, is at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/powertoys/fancyzones.
Setting up Windows Snap Layouts
- Open the applications you want to arrange and place the pointer over a window’s maximize or restore button. Alternatively, press Windows+Z.
- Review the layouts Windows offers for that display size. Select the region where the current window should go.
- When Snap Assist appears, select the other open windows for the remaining positions.
- For a drag-based workflow, drag a window to the top of the screen and use the Snap bar that appears.
- To return to the arrangement later, hover over the grouped windows on the taskbar, open Task View, or use Alt+Tab and select the Snap group.
- If any of those controls are absent, open Windows Settings, go to the Multitasking options and check the individual Snap Layouts, Snap Assist, Snap bar and Snap groups settings.
Microsoft’s current support explanation of these controls is available at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/experience/snap-your-windows.
Choosing a layout for common ultrawide workflows
Writing, research and communications
A writer may want one large editor, a narrow browser column and a small communications column. FancyZones is the natural fit when those proportions are personal and stable but do not match Windows’ presets. Snap Layouts is sufficient when a two-column arrangement already provides the desired reading and writing balance.

Software development
Development often benefits from a wide code editor, a terminal and a documentation or browser pane. A custom Grid can reserve a large central region and two narrow side regions. If the same project alternates between a debugging layout and a meeting layout, quick-switch hotkeys add value. If you only need to place two or three windows temporarily, Windows’ picker is less setup.
Spreadsheets, timelines and dashboards
Large tables and timelines can require more width than a single narrow zone provides. FancyZones’ ability to span adjacent zones lets you keep a reusable grid while temporarily giving one window a wider footprint. Snap Layouts can still be preferable when the arrangement is short-lived and you do not need custom proportions.
Meetings and presentations
Snap groups are convenient when the same meeting windows need to be reopened together through taskbar hover, Task View or Alt+Tab. FancyZones is useful when the meeting mode has a deliberately asymmetric design—for example, a video call, notes and a narrow agenda column—and you want to switch into that geometry with one hotkey.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Multiple monitors, scaling and orientation limits
FancyZones can target an individual monitor in its editor and includes an option to span zones across monitors. Microsoft says cross-monitor spanning requires the same DPI scaling on the monitors. Mixing scaling values can prevent the intended geometry from lining up, so check Windows’ display-scaling percentages before building a spanning layout.
Recommended Free Tools
Microsoft also warns of possible unexpected effects when monitors use different orientations. A portrait side monitor beside a landscape ultrawide may therefore need separate layouts or testing rather than one assumed continuous canvas.
Best Value
Windows Snap has its own native multi-display behavior, but the documented availability of its flyout arrangements depends partly on display size. Do not assume that a layout offered on one monitor will appear identically on every connected screen.
Compatibility and elevation caveats
Elevated applications
If FancyZones cannot move or resize an application running with elevated privileges, Microsoft says PowerToys may need to run as administrator so it can interact with that application. Use elevation when the specific compatibility problem requires it; do not run PowerToys elevated all the time without a reason.
DPI-unaware applications
Microsoft documents a mixed-scaling case in which applications that are not DPI-aware can land a few pixels away from screen edges. That is a limitation of how the application handles scaling, not necessarily a faulty zone definition. Test the affected application at the scaling settings you actually use.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Applications that cannot be zoned
FancyZones lists some applications it cannot zone. A custom layout is not a guarantee that every window will obey it. If one application refuses to move or resize, compare its behavior with a normal Windows snap and check the FancyZones compatibility notes before rebuilding the entire layout.
Shortcut and interaction trade-offs
| Interaction | FancyZones | Windows Snap Layouts |
|---|---|---|
| Mouse drag | Hold Shift by default to show zones; activation can be changed in settings. | Drag to the top to open the Snap bar, or use the maximize-button flyout. |
| Keyboard | Optional override can make Windows+Arrow use FancyZones regions. | Retains the familiar Windows snapping behavior by default. |
| Visual picker | Shows your configured zones in the editor and overlay. | Shows Windows’ predetermined layouts through the flyout. |
| Returning to a setup | Use a custom layout’s quick-switch hotkey. | Restore a Snap group from taskbar hover, Task View or Alt+Tab. |
Choose one interaction model deliberately. Enabling FancyZones’ keyboard override changes a shortcut many Windows users rely on, while leaving it disabled means keyboard snapping continues to follow Windows rather than your custom zones.
Troubleshooting decision tree
- The Windows flyout does not appear: check Windows Multitasking settings; the native Snap flyout may be disabled independently of Snap Assist, the Snap bar or Snap groups.
- FancyZones zones do not appear while dragging: confirm FancyZones is enabled and try the default Shift modifier. Review its activation setting if you intentionally changed the behavior.
- Windows+Arrow moves windows to the standard edges: the FancyZones keyboard override is probably off. Enable it only if you accept the shortcut change.
- A zone is a few pixels off on a multi-monitor desk: check for mixed DPI scaling and whether the application is DPI-aware.
- A window will not move or resize: determine whether it is elevated or listed among applications FancyZones cannot zone. Run PowerToys as administrator only when elevation is needed for that application.
- Cross-monitor zones behave unexpectedly: verify identical DPI scaling and check whether the monitors use different orientations. Separate per-monitor layouts may be more predictable.
- The available Snap presets do not fit: use FancyZones’ Grid or Canvas editor rather than trying to force a predetermined Windows arrangement to match an asymmetric design.
Which should you use?
Start with Windows Snap Layouts if you want zero additional layout design, a visible picker and built-in restoration of grouped windows. Its presets, Snap Assist, Snap bar and Snap groups cover conventional side-by-side and multi-window arrangements with little configuration.
Start with FancyZones if the ultrawide is valuable precisely because it can show unusual proportions. It is the stronger match for custom columns, overlapping or freely sized regions, several named work modes, and windows that need to span adjacent zones. Factor in the Shift drag behavior, optional keyboard-shortcut takeover and the multi-monitor scaling requirements before standardizing it.
For many desks, the practical answer is to keep both available: use Windows’ native picker for an occasional quick arrangement and FancyZones for the repeatable layouts that Windows’ presets cannot express. That is a workflow choice based on documented features, not evidence that one tool is inherently faster.
