If you want Windows to place open apps into a repeatable layout instead of making you resize each one by hand, Microsoft PowerToys FancyZones is likely the tool behind that workflow. It lets you define custom screen zones and move windows into them. Windows also has built-in Snap for predefined layouts, so you may not need PowerToys if those are enough.
What is PowerToys FancyZones?
FancyZones is a window-management utility included in Microsoft PowerToys. You define zones on the desktop, then place windows into those zones; FancyZones can resize and reposition a window to fit. Microsoft describes it as a way to arrange and snap windows into custom layouts. Microsoft’s FancyZones documentation explains the feature and its settings.

The practical benefit is consistency: once a layout suits your work, you can reuse its zone arrangement rather than repeatedly dragging window edges to approximate the same sizes. FancyZones arranges windows that are open; it does not, by itself, launch your full set of work apps.

Should you use FancyZones or Windows Snap?
Windows already includes Snap, which provides predefined arrangements and supports mouse, touch, and keyboard input. FancyZones is the option to consider when you want to define your own zone positions and sizes. Neither is universally better; the right choice depends on whether built-in layouts meet your needs.

How to start arranging windows with FancyZones
- Install and open PowerToys. FancyZones is one of its utilities. If you only need predefined arrangements, try Windows Snap first instead.
- Open FancyZones in PowerToys Settings. Use its layout editor to choose or create a layout with zones that fit your screen and the windows you use.
- Place an open window into a zone. Drag it to a zone, or use the keyboard shortcut behavior configured for FancyZones. The window can then be resized and repositioned to fit the target zone.
- Check the shortcut in your installed version. Microsoft says the layout-editor shortcut can be changed in PowerToys Settings. Exact setting labels and shortcut behavior can vary by version, so consult the current FancyZones documentation alongside the settings shown on your PC.
When Workspaces makes more sense
If your goal is more than positioning the windows already open—if you want a saved group of apps to launch together in an arranged setup—look at PowerToys Workspaces. Microsoft’s Workspaces documentation describes capturing and relaunching app groups and notes that Workspaces uses FancyZones for window positioning.

Does FancyZones save time?
It can reduce repeated manual resizing when you reuse a custom layout, but the Microsoft feature pages cited here do not quantify time saved, productivity gains, or adoption. Treat those outcomes as dependent on your workflow rather than as a guaranteed measured improvement.
