Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Short answer: choose a rack only after the colocation provider confirms continuous power delivery and heat removal for the exact rack positions and load distribution you plan to install. Then compare how many footprints, service clearances, cable routes, and expansion positions that supported density requires. A facility’s advertised total megawatts or an average kW-per-rack figure is not proof that it can run a few unusually dense cabinets.
What power density means in colocation
Power density is the electrical load a rack position can receive and the heat that the facility can remove from that position. It is therefore a facility capability, not merely a specification printed on a cabinet or server. A rack may have enough physical space for equipment whose nameplate load adds up to 30 kW, yet the row may lack the branch circuits, airflow, heat-exchange capacity, or operating rules needed to run it continuously.

Ask for two separate values:
- Delivered power at the proposed position: the continuous kW limit, voltage, circuit and receptacle arrangement, and any A/B-feed or other redundancy requirement.
- Heat-removal capability at that position: the cooling method, airflow capacity and direction, containment rules, and the conditions under which the provider stands behind the stated load.
The number that matters is the supported combination at your actual location, not the largest number in a marketing brochure.
Useful density benchmarks—and their limits
The Open Compute Project’s Colocation Facility Guidelines v4.0.2 (2025) classify maximum rack density in two bands:

| Guideline band | Maximum rack density | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Acceptable | At least 8 kW | A band in the OCP guideline, not a guarantee that every provider or rack position can deliver 8 kW. |
| Optimum | At least 12 kW | A higher OCP guideline band; it is not a universal market standard or a promise for a particular site. |
Oracle’s Capacity Requirements guidance uses different values for early design: 15 kW per rack for a standard server or network rack, and 17 kW or more for a specialty, dense, or high-performance rack. Oracle describes these as planning values, not a guarantee of the final rack mix; a product-specific review can identify higher requirements.
| Early-design planning value | Application | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 15 kW per rack | Standard server or network rack | Oracle planning value for early design; final equipment review is required. |
| 17 kW or more per rack | Specialty, dense, or high-performance rack | Oracle planning value; the actual product configuration may require more. |
These figures are useful for a first conversation with a provider. They do not answer whether your chosen cabinet, row, or cooling zone can support the load. Treat every benchmark as a starting assumption that must be validated against the equipment list and the proposed facility location.
Why total facility capacity can mislead you
Aggregate capacity does not describe how power and heat are distributed. The OCP guideline gives a clear example: a row of twelve 12 kW racks uses 144 kW in total and may be supportable, while three 36 kW racks combined with nine 4 kW racks also total 144 kW but may not be. The second arrangement creates concentrated electrical and thermal peaks that the row’s airflow paths and physical infrastructure might not handle.

Request an assurance against your rack-by-rack distribution. A statement such as “the hall has sufficient megawatts” or “the average rack allowance is 12 kW” leaves the most important question unanswered: can the specific high-load positions operate continuously without exceeding circuit, temperature, or airflow limits?
Give the provider a floor plan or rack schedule showing each cabinet’s expected continuous load, peak or startup load where relevant, feed arrangement, and neighboring equipment. Ask the provider to review that distribution rather than replacing it with an average.
Translate your equipment plan into a rack load
Inventory every device
List servers, storage, switches, appliances, power shelves, and any equipment mounted outside the primary cabinet. Record the manufacturer’s electrical input range, the voltage and plug type, the number of power supplies, and whether the device is expected to run continuously at the stated load. Include top-of-rack networking and management hardware; small devices can still affect receptacle count, cable routing, and airflow.
Separate planning, normal, and worst-case values
Use an early-design value to reserve capacity, then replace it with equipment-specific information as the bill of materials becomes known. Do not silently turn a nameplate maximum into a measured operating value, or treat a typical utilization estimate as a guaranteed upper bound. Show the provider which value is being used for circuit sizing and which is being used for thermal review.
Map loads to actual positions
Two racks with the same total kW can have different cooling behavior if one places nearly all of its load in a single cabinet or at one end of a row. Mark the intended cabinet positions and neighbors. If the provider proposes a different location, request a new confirmation; moving a dense rack can change the available branch capacity, airflow path, and service clearances.

Account for growth without hiding it in an average
Show the initial deployment and the next planned phase separately. This lets the provider reserve adjacent space and the required power and cooling increments without pretending that future capacity is already installed. Ask what lead time and dependencies apply to each expansion step.
Cooling is the other half of every kW decision
NVIDIA’s DGX SuperPOD planning documentation states: “The three main resource constraints in an air-cooled data center environment are power, cooling, and space.” The three constraints interact. A rack can be electrically feedable yet thermally unsupported, or thermally manageable only if neighboring positions remain lightly loaded.
Ask the provider to specify:
- Whether the proposed zone uses air cooling, liquid cooling, or a combination.
- The airflow capacity and direction available to the rack, including the expected supply and return path.
- Whether hot-aisle or cold-aisle containment, blanking panels, side panels, or other airflow controls are required.
- How the site evaluates a nonuniform mix such as a few dense racks beside lightly loaded cabinets.
- Which thermal limits are covered by the service agreement and which are operating assumptions.
There is no universal kW value at which liquid cooling becomes mandatory. The answer depends on the equipment, rack distribution, facility design, and provider policy. Do not infer a cooling method from a rack-density number alone.

Count the complete footprint needed to install, cable, operate, and service the deployment. Include front and rear working clearances, adjacent network equipment, overhead or underfloor cable paths, door swing, and any separation the provider requires between cabinets. A plan that fits cabinets on paper may fail when technicians cannot open a rear door or route a high-count cable bundle.
Deployment-specific equipment can impose stricter requirements. NVIDIA’s DGX SuperPOD guide calls for EIA-310-compatible enclosed 19-inch racks at least 48U high and recommends cabinets measuring 800 mm by 1,200 mm to improve cable management and service access. Those dimensions apply to that system, not to colocation racks generally; obtain the same level of specificity for your own hardware.
Ask the facility to confirm the permitted rack height, width, depth, floor loading, doors, side panels, and clearances in writing. Confirm whether the provider supplies cabinets or permits customer-supplied equipment, and whether the cabinet must meet a particular standard.
Choosing more lower-density racks or fewer high-density racks
Neither layout is automatically better. The right choice is the one that satisfies the provider’s power and heat-removal limits while preserving serviceability and the growth path you actually need.

When more lower-density racks are the safer choice
- The facility can support your total load only when it is spread across more positions.
- Your equipment has front-to-back airflow that benefits from predictable, lightly loaded neighboring cabinets.
- You need separate fault domains, maintenance access, or room for network and management equipment.
- The provider can reserve adjacent footprints more easily than it can approve a concentrated high-density zone.
The trade-off is additional cabinet, cross-connect, cable-path, and floor-space consumption. Confirm that the extra positions do not create a new service-clearance or pathway problem.

When fewer high-density racks can work
- The proposed positions have a documented continuous power and cooling commitment for the exact rack-by-rack distribution.
- The cabinets, feeds, airflow controls, and service clearances are approved for the equipment.
- Concentration materially simplifies cabling or keeps a tightly coupled system within the permitted footprint.
- The provider can reserve the same density and redundancy for the next phase.
The trade-off is less tolerance for a hot spot, a failed cooling component, a changed equipment mix, or a neighboring rack that is later populated. A high-density plan needs stronger site-specific evidence, not merely a higher average allowance.
A step-by-step method for selecting the rack plan
- Build the rack schedule. For every proposed cabinet, list equipment, planned continuous kW, relevant peak or startup information, voltage, receptacles, and A/B-feed requirements.
- Mark the distribution. Place each cabinet on a proposed row or zone and show adjacent loads. Identify the densest positions instead of reporting only a total.
- Request a position-specific power check. Ask for the maximum continuous kW at each proposed position, the committed row or zone capacity, circuit arrangement, and redundancy included.
- Request a thermal check. Obtain the cooling method, airflow direction and capacity, containment requirements, and confirmation that the proposed nonuniform distribution is covered.
- Draw the service footprint. Add cabinet dimensions, front and rear clearances, cable routes, network equipment, doors, and technician access. Verify that the provider’s permitted dimensions match your equipment.
- Test alternate layouts. Compare a spread-out arrangement with a concentrated arrangement using the same rack schedule. Keep the version that the provider can support without violating clearances or airflow rules.
- Plan resilience. Document which power and cooling components are redundant, what the A/B feeds protect, and which protections are explicitly included in the service agreement.
- Reserve expansion. Identify adjacent cabinets, the next power and cooling increment, and the lead time or dependencies for activating them.
- Obtain a written commitment. Attach the rack schedule and layout to the order or service agreement so the approved distribution, not an informal average, is the reference point.
Questions to put to every colocation provider
- What maximum continuous kW can this particular rack position support, and what total power is committed to the row or zone?
- Which cooling method and airflow capacity support that load, and does the assurance cover our rack-by-rack distribution rather than a uniform average?
- What rack dimensions, service clearances, airflow controls, power feeds, and customer-supplied equipment are permitted at this site?
- What redundancy is included in the power and cooling path, and what is explicitly covered by the service agreement?
- Can adjacent rack space and the required power and cooling increments be reserved for expansion, and what lead time or dependencies apply?
Ask for answers tied to the named building, room, row, and cabinet positions. A provider may have several halls with different electrical topologies and cooling limits.
Installation rules can change the usable density
Facility installation policies determine whether your theoretical density is operationally usable. Customer guidance from Equinix describes airflow-management requirements in its colocation environment. Before finalizing a rack plan, confirm the selected site’s rules for aisle containment, blanking panels, side panels, cabinet doors, cable openings, and customer-supplied equipment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThese details affect both heat removal and service access. Missing blanking panels can allow recirculation; a side panel or door that the provider requires may change the cabinet width or neighboring clearance; and an unapproved cabinet can delay installation even when the electrical load is acceptable. Treat installation policy as part of capacity planning, not as a checklist for the day equipment arrives.
Resilience and expansion: evaluate them together
A rack density quote is incomplete unless you know what happens when a feed, cooling unit, or distribution component is unavailable. Ask whether the quoted kW is available on each required feed, whether the rating assumes both feeds are operating, and which components have redundancy. Request the same explanation for cooling: identify the redundant path and the operating condition under which the provider still supports your load.
Expansion is a physical and utility reservation, not just an intention to order another cabinet later. Confirm that adjacent positions can be held, that the row or zone has enough future power and cooling, and that any required upgrades have stated lead times. If the next phase would force a move to another room, include that dependency in the design decision.

Comparing kW without comparing heat removal
Why it fails: electrical capacity can exist where the cooling path cannot remove the resulting heat.
Correction: require the cooling method, airflow capacity, controls, and nonuniform-load assurance alongside the power number.
Counting only cabinet footprints
Why it fails: doors, technician access, cable paths, and adjacent equipment consume usable space.
Correction: draw the full service footprint and have the provider approve the dimensions and clearances.
Treating a planning value as a promise
Why it fails: OCP guideline bands and Oracle’s early-design values are not guarantees for your equipment or site.
Correction: replace preliminary values with an equipment-specific review and a written facility commitment.
Ignoring installation policies until delivery
Why it fails: airflow controls, cabinet standards, and customer-equipment rules can force redesign or delay turn-up.

What the provider’s evidence should look like
Not all capacity statements have the same evidentiary value. An early planning figure is useful for sizing conversations but remains provisional. A published facility guideline explains the site’s general design assumptions but may not apply to every row. A site-specific commitment tied to your rack schedule and positions is the strongest basis for an order.
Keep these items with the deployment record:
- The final rack-by-rack load schedule and proposed floor plan.
- Written power limits, voltage, receptacles, feed topology, and redundancy assumptions.
- Written cooling method, airflow requirements, containment rules, and nonuniform-load confirmation.
- Approved cabinet dimensions, service clearances, cable routes, and customer-equipment rules.
- Expansion reservations, activation lead times, and any conditions that could change the commitment.
This record gives operations staff a reference when equipment is replaced or a neighboring rack is added. Revalidate the plan whenever the equipment mix, cabinet position, or facility zone changes.
Limits of universal comparisons
There is no universal price-per-kW comparison, rack height, cabinet footprint, or liquid-cooling threshold that applies across colocation facilities. Prices, installation rules, available voltages, redundancy options, and density limits vary by provider, building, room, and date. Compare written offers using the same rack schedule and the same definition of continuous power, cooling support, service space, and expansion capacity.
When a provider cannot state how a number applies to your exact rack positions, treat that number as a planning indication rather than a capacity commitment.
Decision rule
Select fewer high-density racks only when the provider documents power and heat-removal support for the exact distribution, approves the required cabinet and service footprint, and can preserve the same resilience and growth path. Select more lower-density racks when spreading the load is the only way to keep airflow, circuits, access, and future expansion within documented limits. In both cases, the decisive evidence is position-specific and distribution-specific—not the facility’s total capacity or an unqualified average kW-per-rack figure.
