Consider adding a solar charger on longer off-grid trips only when your energy needs exceed what you can comfortably carry in batteries and the route offers sustained direct sunlight. Shade, panel angle, weight and the time needed to manage charging can make solar a poor fit.
Power bank vs. solar charger: the practical difference
| Decision | Power bank | Solar charger |
|---|---|---|
| Where the energy comes from | Stored before departure; available until the bank runs down. | Generated on the trail when sunlight and panel positioning cooperate. |
| Best fit | Shorter trips or modest, predictable charging needs. | Longer off-grid trips where demand exceeds carried battery capacity and there is reliable open-sky exposure. |
| Main constraint | Capacity is finite; greater capacity generally means more size and weight. | Sun exposure, shade, clouds, panel angle, movement and charging management all affect output. |
| What to compare | Capacity, weight, output and ports, device compatibility, and estimated recharges. | Rated watts, field conditions, weight, packability, ways to attach or position it, and compatibility with a power bank. |
| Typical setup | Charge it before leaving and use it to recharge devices on the trip. | Often use it to charge a power bank; check manufacturer guidance before connecting a device directly. |
REI Co-op’s solar charger guidance covers these tradeoffs. The key distinction is predictability: a power bank gives you stored energy at the start, while a panel can replenish energy only when the conditions and setup allow it.

How to size a power bank for your trip
Start with the devices you will actually use and how often you expect to recharge each one. Navigation, frequent photos or video, and tracking can increase a phone’s power needs, so a plan based only on occasional calls may come up short.

- Estimate recharges. For each device, note how many top-ups or full recharges you expect before you can charge again.
- Compare battery capacities as a rough guide. REI’s example compares a 6,700 mAh power bank with a 3,000 mAh phone or GPS battery: the arithmetic suggests about two full recharges.
- Leave a margin. Battery-to-battery energy transfer is not 100% efficient, so rated mAh does not translate into an exact number of device charges. Allow for losses and heavier-than-expected use.
- Balance capacity against carry weight. Choose enough capacity for the plan without carrying a larger, heavier bank than the trip requires.
The two-recharge figure is REI’s illustrative example, not a universal performance guarantee. Actual results depend on the devices and charging conditions. REI’s portable power bank roundup names the BioLite Charge 80 PD as its “Best Portable Power Bank for Backpacking.” Treat that as one retailer-roundup recommendation; compare its capacity, weight, ports and device compatibility against your own needs rather than assuming one model is best for everyone.

When a solar charger makes sense
Solar becomes more compelling as a trip gets longer and the energy you need exceeds what you can carry in batteries. It is most useful when the route provides extended direct sunlight and you can position the panel toward the sun.
- More favorable: open country, dependable sun exposure and a practical way to orient or secure the panel.
- Less favorable: deep forest canopy, shadowy canyons, frequent cloud or shade, or a route where the panel cannot be positioned toward the sun.
Backpacking-oriented panels range from compact units to larger panels. Larger panels can collect more power, but the wattage printed on a panel reflects ideal conditions—for example, a clean panel square to the sun without clouds or shadows. It is not a promise of a particular charging rate on the trail. Semi-flexible panels may include attachment points for a pack or tent, but attachment alone does not guarantee useful exposure while moving.

Use solar to refill a battery when appropriate
REI notes that a solar charger is often better used to charge a power bank than to charge a sensitive device directly: some panels may not have circuitry to regulate current into a device. Before direct charging, check the panel manufacturer’s guidance for regulated USB output. Pairing a panel with a bank also gives you stored energy to use when the sun is unavailable, though the actual usefulness still depends on field conditions.

Choose based on trip length, sunlight and load
- Weekend trip, modest charging needs: Take a fully charged power bank sized to your estimated recharges, with a buffer for transfer losses and heavier use.
- Longer trip, high charging demand, reliable sun: Consider a solar panel as a supplement if the extra weight and the need to position and manage it make sense for your route.
- Long trip through shaded terrain: Do not count on solar to make up a battery shortfall. Revisit your device use and carried capacity because canopy and canyon shade limit solar usefulness.
- Unsure whether the panel will work on your route: Treat its rated wattage as an ideal-condition rating, not as assured daily energy. Do not plan around a specific recharge time without model- and condition-specific evidence.
If you are flying to the trail
The FAA says spare lithium-ion batteries, including power banks, must travel in carry-on baggage and be protected from damage and short circuit. Its general limit is 100 Wh per battery. With airline approval, passengers may carry up to two spare lithium-ion batteries rated 101–160 Wh; airlines can set stricter limits, so check the specific carrier’s current policy before flying.
