A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11A safe PostgreSQL upgrade starts by identifying whether it is a minor or major release, choosing an upgrade method that fits your downtime and topology, proving that backups can be restored, and rehearsing rollback. Minor releases keep a compatible storage format; major releases can change internal structures and require a logical dump and restore, pg_upgrade, or a replication-based migration. Keep the old cluster or a verified recovery copy untouched until the new version passes application, extension, and replication checks.
1. Determine what kind of upgrade you are doing
The mechanics depend on the release boundary. A minor upgrade within the same major version retains a compatible storage format, so it normally involves replacing server binaries, applying the release’s fixes, restarting, and validating the service. A major upgrade, such as moving from one major version to another, may change internal catalog or storage structures. You cannot treat it as a routine package update: use a logical dump and restore, pg_upgrade, or a migration based on logical replication.

| Upgrade type | Storage compatibility | Typical mechanism | Required preparation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minor release | Compatible within the major version | Install the newer minor-release binaries, restart, and validate | Backups, service checks, and application smoke tests |
| Major release | Internal structures can change | Logical dump/restore, pg_upgrade, or logical-replication migration |
Version-specific migration notes, extension builds, rehearsed rollback, and client testing |
For a jump over more than one major version, read the release notes and migration sections for every intervening major release even if the selected tool can move directly between the endpoints. Features, defaults, reserved words, authentication behavior, and extension requirements can change between intermediate releases.
2. Choose the upgrade method against your constraints
No single method is universally best. Compare the options before you schedule downtime, and record the point at which the old cluster can no longer be used as an immediate fallback.

| Method | Expected downtime | Data-volume duration | Operational complexity | Extension compatibility | Replication topology | Cutover control | Rollback speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Logical dump and restore | Service is unavailable while the final dump and restore complete | Tied to dump and restore volume; PostgreSQL provides no universal duration | Simplest conceptual boundary; useful for selected databases or layout changes | Target-side extension installation and upgrade must be handled independently | Source and target can be separate clusters; replication is optional | Restore the target, stop writes, then redirect clients | Old source remains available until traffic is switched |
pg_upgrade |
Usually shorter than dump/restore because the clusters are stopped only for the upgrade work; exact outage depends on the environment | Reuses user data files, so it is faster than copying every row; no general benchmark is promised | High: binaries, compile settings, libraries, authentication, tablespaces, standbys, and generated scripts all need coordination | Matching shared-object files must be installed before the run; extension-update scripts may be generated afterward | Streaming and log-shipping standbys require deliberate shutdown and checkpoint sequencing | Planned stop, checks, upgrade, validation, and traffic switch | Restore the old cluster from a tested backup; link-mode failures can require recovery after old files have changed |
| Logical replication migration | PostgreSQL documents a switch-over of only several seconds, subject to setup, version, and feature constraints | Initial synchronization and catch-up depend on data size and lag; no universal total duration is stated | Highest setup effort: publisher, subscriber, slots, output plugins, validation, and cutover coordination | Install and validate extensions on the target independently of replicated table data | New-version subscriber receives changes from the old publisher before promotion | Quiesce writes, record the final change position, promote the target, and redirect clients | Old primary is a clear fallback until the final cutover |
The replication-based option is the lowest-downtime design when its version and feature prerequisites fit your system. It does not remove the need for backups or testing: replication can faithfully copy an application mistake, an incompatible schema change, or a sequence problem.
3. Complete the preflight inventory
Record the source and target environment
Write down the source and target major and minor versions, operating system, CPU architecture, package or build flags, data directories, ports, authentication rules, tablespaces, custom configuration, scheduled jobs, monitoring, and client-driver versions. pg_upgrade checks several binary and compile-time compatibility conditions, but those checks do not prove that every external module, driver, job, or monitoring integration will work.
Review every intervening release
Read the official release notes and migration guidance for each major version between the source and target. Pay attention to authentication changes, removed or renamed parameters, SQL behavior, catalog changes, planner changes, and extension notes. Capture required configuration edits in the runbook instead of relying on memory during the outage.

Inventory extensions and external modules
For every database, list the extension name and version, package that provides it, shared-object filename, upgrade path, and whether the target distribution supplies a compatible build. Include custom modules and procedural-language libraries, not only objects shown by a routine database query. An extension that exists in the old cluster but lacks a target-version shared library can stop pg_upgrade or leave the new cluster unable to start.
Check clients and application behavior
Test application clients against the target server before production cutover. Exercise representative reads and writes, transactions, connection pooling, background workers, migrations, reporting jobs, and administrative scripts. Include the driver versions recorded in the inventory; a server upgrade can expose assumptions in older clients even when the database itself starts normally.
4. Make backups that support recovery
Use the right backup for the selected method
For a dump/restore major upgrade, create a logical backup with tools such as pg_dump or pg_dumpall. PostgreSQL explicitly states that file-system-level backup methods do not substitute for a logical backup in this method. Keep a separate restorable backup or equivalent recovery copy for rollback regardless of whether you choose dump/restore, pg_upgrade, or logical replication.

Prove that the backup restores
A backup is useful for rollback only after a restore rehearsal. Restore it into a production-like environment, verify that databases open, roles and privileges are present, extensions load, representative queries return expected results, and application connections succeed. Record restore duration and the people, credentials, storage, and configuration required to repeat it. Do not call a copied directory a rollback plan until you have demonstrated that it can become a working cluster.
Define retention and the point of no return
Keep the old cluster, its configuration, and its recovery files untouched until the acceptance window closes. In an in-place or link-mode workflow, changing or reusing old files can remove the quick fallback; the documented recovery path for a failed upgrade is restoration of the old cluster from backup. Logical replication generally preserves a cleaner old-primary fallback until the target is promoted.
5. Run a rehearsed pg_upgrade sequence
- Install the target binaries. Install the new PostgreSQL server and client binaries, then initialize a new target cluster with compatible
initdbsettings. Confirm data directories, ports, ownership, permissions, tablespaces, and configuration paths. - Install extension and module libraries. Place every required extension and custom-module shared-object file where the new server can load it. Match the target architecture and build. Do not run
CREATE EXTENSIONmerely to preload schemas thatpg_upgradewill carry forward; doing so can duplicate extension objects. - Copy full-text search support files. Move custom dictionaries, synonym files, thesauri, and stop-word files to the target installation and verify their paths in the configuration.
- Prepare authentication. Make sure the upgrade process can connect repeatedly to both clusters using the intended authentication rules. Test local and administrative connections before stopping services.
- Coordinate standbys. Keep streaming and log-shipping standbys receiving changes through the required shutdown sequence. Where the documented standby-upgrade path requires it, verify that standby checkpoints match the required state before proceeding. Record replication health and lag before the stop.
- Stop both servers cleanly. Quiesce application writes according to your runbook, stop the old and new servers, and verify that no process still holds the data directories.
- Run the checks first. Execute the
pg_upgradecheck phase before the actual upgrade. Resolve missing libraries, incompatible settings, tablespace problems, authentication failures, and binary mismatches rather than overriding warnings. - Execute the upgrade and retain its logs. Run the planned upgrade mode, preserve generated logs, and inspect them for warnings or skipped objects. If the tool creates an extension-update script, do not ignore it.
- Apply extension updates. Run the generated extension-update script after the new cluster is available, following the script’s order and capturing its output. Confirm extension versions and shared-library loading in every affected database.
- Refresh planner statistics and test. Rebuild or refresh statistics using the procedure appropriate for your deployment, then run application-level smoke tests. PostgreSQL requires client testing but does not prescribe one universal statistics command, so use the statistics workflow already validated in your rehearsal.
- Validate standbys. Reconnect streaming or log-shipping replicas, confirm they are following the target cluster, and check replay position and errors before reopening normal traffic.
6. Migrate with logical replication when downtime must be minimal
Confirm the version prerequisite
Current PostgreSQL documentation says migration of logical-replication clusters is possible only when all members of the old logical-replication clusters are PostgreSQL 17.0 or later. If any old-cluster member is earlier, use a different design or an intermediate upgrade rather than assuming the cluster migration procedure applies.

Build and prepare the target
Install the target major version on the subscriber side, configure publisher and subscriber settings, install the required logical-output-plugin libraries, and create the logical replication slots. Validate extension availability and target-side schema before copying data. The target must be able to accept and apply changes before you schedule cutover.
Synchronize and validate
Let the subscriber perform its initial synchronization, then monitor replication lag. Compare row counts or checksums for critical tables, and specifically test constraints, sequence behavior, indexes, large objects where applicable, and application writes. Exact validation queries depend on the schema, so keep them in the deployment runbook and rehearse them against a production-like copy.
Disable, upgrade, and re-enable the subscription
- Quiesce or coordinate writes according to the migration plan and record the final change position.
- Disable the subscription before upgrading the publisher.
- Upgrade the publisher and complete its validation.
- Re-enable the subscription and verify that the subscriber catches up without apply errors.
- Run connection, read/write, job, constraint, sequence, and latency checks before promoting the target.
Logical replication supports replication between different major PostgreSQL versions, which is why this design can keep the target synchronized while the source remains available. It still has feature and topology constraints; treat unsupported objects and conflicts as cutover blockers.
Best Value
7. Gate the cutover and rollback explicitly
Assign ownership and acceptance checks
Name a go/no-go owner and make the acceptance criteria measurable. At minimum, check successful connections, clean migration logs, extension status, representative read and write transactions, background jobs, completion of the latest backup, and replication health. Set thresholds for lag, error rate, and latency before the window begins.
Switch traffic deliberately
- Freeze or quiesce writes as required by the chosen method.
- Record the final logical change position, checkpoint, or other handoff marker.
- Switch connection routing, service discovery, or application configuration to the target.
- Watch database errors, application errors, latency, lock behavior, job execution, and replication status continuously during the acceptance window.
Use a documented rollback gate
Decide in advance which failures trigger rollback and who can call it. If the target fails acceptance, stop new writes there, preserve diagnostic logs, restore the old cluster from the tested backup when required, and redirect service to it. For logical replication, keep the old primary unchanged until the rollback window closes. Never delete the old data or recovery copy merely because the new server has started successfully.
8. Troubleshoot common blockers
- Missing extension library: install the target-version shared object before rerunning checks; verify package architecture and library paths.
- Extension objects appear twice: remove the attempt to preload them with
CREATE EXTENSION; letpg_upgradecarry the existing extension schema and run its generated update script afterward. - Authentication or connection failures: test the exact administrative connection repeatedly with the target
pg_hba.conf, ports, socket paths, and credentials before shutdown. - Standby does not follow: inspect checkpoint alignment, replay position, connection settings, and logs before reopening writes; do not declare success from primary status alone.
- Replication subscriber is behind: keep the publisher available, measure lag, inspect apply errors and conflicts, and postpone cutover until row checks and application writes agree.
- Application regressions after startup: compare driver behavior, SQL errors, query plans, authentication, jobs, and extension-dependent features with the rehearsal results; starting the server is not the acceptance test.
- Rollback copy cannot start: stop the cutover, use the separately tested recovery procedure, and do not improvise by editing the only remaining backup.
9. A practical decision rule
Choose logical dump/restore when you need the clearest separation between old and new clusters, want to move selected databases, or are changing layout and can afford downtime proportional to the data volume. Choose pg_upgrade when the binaries, settings, extensions, and standby procedure are compatible and you want to reuse existing data files for a shorter outage. Choose logical replication when several seconds of switch-over downtime is the priority, the version prerequisite is met, and your team can operate and validate a publisher/subscriber topology. Whichever path you choose, the non-negotiables are a tested recovery copy, extension preparation, application testing, measurable cutover gates, and an untouched fallback until acceptance is complete.
