Astronomers have identified HD 156295 b as a possible giant planet orbiting in the habitable zone of HD 156295, an A-type star whose surface is roughly 2,000°C hotter than the Sun’s. The planet is a candidate, not a confirmed discovery. Its orbit was inferred from changes in the star’s pulsations, and its estimated mass is 6.3 ± 1.1 times Jupiter’s. If confirmed, the study says HD 156295 would be the hottest star known to host a habitable-zone planet.
Is the planet confirmed?
No. The study reports HD 156295 b as a planet candidate based on an orbital-model fit to the star’s pulsation-timing variations. The authors’ wording is conditional: “If confirmed, HD 156295 would be the hottest star to host a habitable-zone planet.” The result is therefore not yet evidence of a confirmed planet or a settled record.

The authors infer a mass of 6.3 ± 1.1 Jupiter masses. That is an estimate from the analysis, not a direct weighing. They report that the candidate is consistent with Hipparcos–Gaia astrometric-acceleration constraints where those data are available, and say astrometric follow-up could confirm and further characterize it. The Astrophysical Journal paper presents the candidate and its uncertainties.
How did astronomers find it?
The method treats a pulsating star as a clock. δ Scuti stars brighten and dim in regular patterns. If an orbiting companion moves the star around a shared center of mass, the star’s changing distance from Earth can make its pulsation signals arrive slightly earlier or later because light takes time to travel. Researchers compare those timing changes with orbital models to look for a companion.

If you encounter any issues like missing parts, shipping damage, or difficulty achieving a clear image, our technical support team is ready to ensure a perfect stargazing experience.
This is an inference from the timing of stellar pulsations. The study analyzed 16,440 δ Scuti pulsators observed by NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and reported one planet candidate, HD 156295 b, plus eight candidate brown dwarfs. The paper does not describe HD 156295 b as a directly imaged planet or a planet detected crossing its star in a transit.
What does “habitable zone” mean here?
The habitable zone is the range of orbits where a planet could receive an amount of energy that permits liquid water under suitable conditions. Here, the term describes the candidate’s inferred orbital placement around its star; it does not establish that the planet has liquid water, a suitable atmosphere, or life.

HD 156295 b is described as a giant planet candidate, not an Earth-like world. The “about 2,000 degrees hotter” comparison concerns the star’s surface temperature relative to the Sun, not the planet’s temperature. FOX Weather’s October 5, 2026 report describes HD 156295 as an A-type star and gives the comparison as roughly 2,000°C hotter than the Sun.
What the study’s numbers do—and don’t—say
The study also estimates how common certain planets might be around A-type stars, but this is a model-dependent population inference rather than a direct count of confirmed worlds. For 5–10 Jupiter-mass planets with orbital periods of 1,900–2,600 days, the authors report an occurrence-rate estimate of η = 0.10, with an interval of −0.08/+0.21. Under the alternative assumption that HD 156295 b is a false positive, they give 1σ and 2σ upper limits of 19% and 39%, respectively. These figures depend on the study’s assumptions and should not be read as precise measured frequencies.
