It can simplify managing a collection of supported ports, but it does not provide copyrighted game files: when a port needs original game data, you must supply it yourself.
What Ports Launcher does
Ports Launcher is a catalog-based manager for native PC source ports and recompilations—not a general-purpose organizer for every game storefront or a launcher for every retro game. Its official project repository describes browsing the catalog, installing listed builds, launching them, and checking for updates in one application. The project says the software is free and licensed under GNU GPL v3.0.

Installation sources documented by the project include GitHub and GitLab releases, as well as direct links. The launcher also supports selecting a version and pinning a port to a chosen release, which can be useful if you prefer not to follow every update automatically.

The launcher installs port or recompilation code; it does not bundle, download, host, or link to copyrighted game assets. Some ports require original game data to run. If an entry needs those files, you must provide them from a copy you legally own. The project says it cannot verify the origin of a file supplied by a user, so check each port’s setup instructions rather than assuming an install is ready to play.

This distinction matters when choosing a catalog entry: a successful download of the port does not necessarily include everything the game needs. The project documents per-port setup instructions to help identify requirements.
Managing an installed library
After installation, the documented library view presents installed ports in a grid. The launcher also records playtime and the last-played time, checks for updates, and lets users uninstall ports. According to the project, uninstalling preserves save data stored inside a port’s folder.

A bulk save-backup option is also documented. If you keep important saves elsewhere, confirm where a particular port stores them and make a backup before removing or changing files; the preservation note applies to saves kept within the port folder.

You can add locally managed ports through a separate catalog file, according to the repository. This offers a way to include your own entries, but it is distinct from one-click installation of a listed build: the project documentation does not say that custom entries are automatically downloaded or updated through the same release sources.

Windows requirements and controls
Ports Launcher targets Windows and requires a working OpenGL driver for its interface. The repository describes it as a native Rust binary with a minimal 7-Zip component bundled for extracting archives. Update checks can be disabled in the app.
The project documents keyboard and XInput gamepad navigation, including in dialogs. A controller is optional, not a requirement. For example, Microsoft lists its Xbox Wireless Controller as compatible with Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs; the product page establishes Windows compatibility, not testing with Ports Launcher.

Who it is—and is not—for
- A good fit: Windows users who want one place to browse and manage supported native ports, use release-based installs and updates, or track a library that includes custom local entries.
- Less suitable: anyone seeking a universal PC game library, storefront replacement, emulator-and-ROM manager, or a way to obtain original game data.
- Check first: whether the port you want is listed, what files it requires, and whether your Windows system has a working OpenGL driver.
The repository documents themes and Discord Rich Presence as additional features. As with the catalog and management functions, these are project-described capabilities rather than independent performance or usability test results.
