Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →An internet-visible port 111 or 2049 is a sign that a service may be reachable—not proof that an NFS share is public, mountable, or vulnerable. Port 111 is commonly associated with RPC binding services; 2049 is the registered NFS port. To judge the risk, verify which service answers, what NFS configuration is reachable, and which clients network and security controls permit.
What do ports 111 and 2049 indicate?
| Port | Common association | What visibility tells you |
|---|---|---|
| 111 | RPC binding or port-mapping services | An RPC-related service may be reachable. A port scan alone does not establish which RPC services are available or whether an NFS export can be accessed. |
| 2049 | NFS | A listener may be reachable on NFS’s registered port. It does not establish that a share is mountable or that data is accessible to an untrusted client. |
RFC 7530 says NFSv2 and NFSv3 servers historically used port 2049 and recommends the registered port as the default. It also explains that using 2049 can let clients avoid RPC binding protocols, allowing NFS to transit firewalls. Consequently, 2049 can be visible without 111, and seeing one or both ports does not reliably identify an NFS version or configuration. RFC 7530 describes protocol standards and recommendations, not the behavior of every deployed server.

Does an open port mean NFS data is exposed?
No. A scan records a network observation: a host appeared to respond on a particular transport and port at a particular time. Filtering, service changes, and scan limitations can affect that observation. It does not, by itself, confirm the service identity, NFS version, accessible exports, client restrictions, authentication, or vulnerability status.
Recommended Free Tools
Assessment requires confirming the service and then checking what a permitted client can actually reach. Review the exports and their client allowlists, network ACLs, security flavor, software support and patch state, and whether internet reachability is needed at all. Treat an unexpected response as a reason to investigate, not as proof that files are publicly available.

How should 111 and 2049 scan results be interpreted?
Check transport and scope
Record whether the finding is for TCP or UDP; a result for one does not establish the status of the other. Also capture the IP address, port, scan date and observation window, and any filtering or exclusions. A listener can be reachable from one scanning location and blocked from another.
Validate the service and access path
Do not equate a detected listener with a confirmed NFS service. Where you are authorized to test, establish the service identity and version, then verify which exports and clients are permitted. Keep the evidence separate: detected port, validated protocol, and confirmed export accessibility are different findings.

Do not infer an internet-wide count from a port list
No defensible, dated internet-wide count or prevalence figure for ports 111 and 2049 is established here. A number is meaningful only alongside its scanner or provider, scan date, address-space scope and exclusions, transport, validation method, deduplication rules, and limitations such as filtering, dynamic addressing, and false positives. Counts of responding IP addresses are not automatically counts of distinct, validated NFS servers.
For comparing scan results, keep TCP and UDP separate, distinguish port 111 from 2049, and compare the same address space and observation window. Also distinguish unique IPs from validated services and services with confirmed accessible exports. CISA lists Censys, Shodan, Thingful, and Shadowserver as examples of platforms that can aid asset visibility; CISA says their inclusion is not an endorsement, and such platforms should not be treated as an authoritative census. CISA’s Internet Exposure Reduction Guidance, published June 4, 2025, recommends discovering internet-accessible assets and repeating assessments.

How can operators reduce exposure?
Apply the controls to the actual need for access. For NFS and RPC, the practical priority is to remove unnecessary public reachability and constrain any required access to trusted networks or source addresses.
- Inventory what is reachable. Identify hosts and services visible from the internet, including TCP and UDP findings where relevant. Compare external observations with internal asset and firewall records.
- Decide whether public access is necessary. Confirm the business need and responsible owner for each exposed service. If remote access is required, prefer private connectivity or narrowly allowlisted sources over unrestricted internet access.
- Remove unnecessary listeners and paths. Disable unused services and protocols, and use network ACLs and segmentation to block unneeded inbound access. CISA’s hardening guidance recommends strict default-deny ACLs, segmentation, and disabling unnecessary services. CISA’s Enhanced Visibility and Hardening Guidance
- Harden services that must remain reachable. Restrict permitted clients and exports, apply current security patches, and replace unsupported software or devices. Review authentication and security configuration rather than assuming the port or NFS version supplies it automatically.
- Recheck and monitor. Scan known internet-facing infrastructure after changes and on a routine schedule; monitor network ingress and egress. CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide also advises disabling unused applications and protocols on exposed assets, regular vulnerability scanning, and timely updates. What security does NFSv4 provide?
NFSv4 has stronger security mechanisms available, but support is not the same as deployment. RFC 7530 requires implementations to support RPCSEC_GSS and Kerberos V5 for interoperability, and notes that the effective security strength depends on the existing Kerberos infrastructure. Verify which security flavor is configured and how it is enforced in the environment; the presence of port 2049 or use of NFSv4 alone does not demonstrate that strong authentication is active.
