For most people who need internet away from fixed broadband, Starlink Mini paired with a Roam plan is the most straightforward portable setup. Mini is Starlink’s backpack-sized terminal with an electronic phased-array antenna, built-in Wi-Fi and DC power input. Roam supplies the mobility features, but the allowance, travel rights and water-coverage rules depend on the plan and country.
The practical constraint is energy: Mini averages 25–40 W, so your battery or power station matters as much as the terminal. A clear view of the sky is the other non-negotiable. This guide explains the hardware, power math, plan choices, travel limits and setup decisions without treating advertised speeds or battery runtimes as guarantees.

The short answer: start with Mini and choose Roam by how you travel
Choose Starlink Mini when you need a terminal that can move between campsites, vehicles, temporary work sites or boats. Starlink describes it as a compact portable kit designed to fit in a backpack. Its integrated Wi-Fi lets you connect devices without first buying a separate router.
Choose a Roam allowance based on the amount of data you expect to use and whether you will cross borders or travel on water. The plan is a service subscription, not a different antenna. Plan names, prices and availability vary by market and can change, so the current country-specific order page is the final authority before you pay.

What the Starlink Mini terminal includes
Mini is the portable hardware documented in Starlink’s Mini specification sheet. The bare unit weighs 1.10 kg. With its kickstand and 15 m cable, the listed weight rises to 1.53 kg, which is the more useful figure when you are planning a real pack.
| Specification | Starlink Mini value |
|---|---|
| Dimensions | 298.5 × 259 × 38.5 mm |
| Bare-unit weight | 1.10 kg |
| Weight with kickstand and 15 m cable | 1.53 kg |
| Average power consumption | 25–40 W |
| Input range | 12–48 V DC |
| Rated input power | 60 W |
| Protection rating | IP67 Type 4 with the DC cable installed |
| Operating temperature | −30°C to 50°C |
| Networking | Integrated Wi-Fi |
The IP67 Type 4 statement applies with the DC cable installed; treat that as the tested configuration rather than assuming the same protection with an open connector. The temperature range is an operating specification, not a promise that a battery will deliver its full capacity at every temperature.
Why the 15 m cable changes packing decisions
The cable gives you room to place the terminal where the sky view is better while keeping your power source and devices in a more sheltered spot. It also adds 0.43 kg when combined with the kickstand, so the 1.53 kg configured weight should be used for luggage planning. Coil the cable without sharp bends and keep connectors clean and fully seated before applying power.

Power is the central buying decision
Mini’s 25–40 W figure is an average consumption range, not a fixed draw. Actual energy use varies with operating conditions and network activity. The terminal’s 12–48 V input and 60 W rating describe its DC input; they do not mean a small phone battery will run it.
Can a power bank run Starlink Mini?
It can, but only when the complete power path meets Starlink’s stated requirement. For the named USB-C-to-barrel-jack accessory, Starlink specifies a 100 W USB Power Delivery source at 20 V/5 A minimum. A generic low-wattage phone power bank is therefore not an evidence-backed choice. Check the bank’s actual USB-PD profile, not merely a large capacity number printed on the case.
The 100 W source requirement and Mini’s 60 W input rating are not contradictory. The source must provide enough voltage, current and overhead for the cable and conversion electronics; the terminal itself is specified for up to 60 W at its input. If your battery cannot sustain the required 20 V/5 A PD profile, use a different source or a properly rated DC output instead of relying on an improvised adapter.
Portable power station versus USB-C bank
A portable power station is often the simpler category for field use because models commonly provide regulated DC or AC outputs and publish usable watt-hours. Select one whose output is compatible with Mini’s input or with the specified USB-PD cable. Do not infer compatibility from a connector that happens to fit.

Estimate runtime from watt-hours
Use this planning equation:
estimated runtime (hours) = battery watt-hours × conversion efficiency ÷ Mini’s average watts
Conversion efficiency is below 100 percent in a real setup because of DC regulators, USB-PD negotiation, cables and the battery’s own management electronics. Use a conservative efficiency assumption and leave reserve capacity; the result is a calculation, not a controlled Starlink runtime test.
| Battery capacity | Illustrative usable energy at 85% efficiency | Runtime at 25 W average | Runtime at 40 W average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 Wh | 425 Wh | About 17 hours | About 10.6 hours |
| 1,000 Wh | 850 Wh | About 34 hours | About 21.3 hours |
Those figures are arithmetic examples using the published 25–40 W range and an explicitly assumed 85 percent efficiency. Your result will be lower if the station has greater losses, if you reserve part of its capacity, or if other equipment shares the battery. Add the consumption of a laptop, lighting, refrigeration or a vehicle inverter separately rather than treating Mini’s draw as the whole system.
Power checklist before leaving home
- Confirm the source’s continuous output, not only its surge rating.
- For the USB-C accessory, verify 20 V/5 A USB-PD and 100 W minimum.
- Check that the cable reaches the intended terminal position without unsafe tension.
- Calculate runtime from usable watt-hours and include conversion losses.
- Carry a charging plan for the battery itself; a large capacity is useless once depleted.
Roam plans: allowance, mobility and changing market rules
Roam is a family of service plans. Starlink’s Roam page lists 50 GB and Unlimited examples, while the March 2025 Critical Information Summary documented a market snapshot containing 5 GB, 50 GB and Unlimited allowances. That snapshot is useful for understanding the range of options, but it is not a universal current price list.
| Allowance example | What the published material establishes |
|---|---|
| 5 GB | Included in the March 2025 market snapshot for Roam |
| 50 GB | Listed as a Roam example and included in the March 2025 market snapshot |
| Unlimited | Listed as a Roam example and included in the March 2025 market snapshot; the cited Help Center policy allows up to 30 days outside the registered home country at a time |
The table describes allowance examples, not a promise that every country offers all three. Prices, taxes, activation terms, overage behavior and plan names are country-specific and volatile. Check the order page for your service address immediately before ordering.
How to choose an allowance
Start with your actual traffic pattern. Email, messaging and ordinary web pages consume far less data than video calls, operating-system downloads, cloud backups or streaming. If several people will connect, estimate the group’s use rather than multiplying one person’s light-use estimate. A lower allowance can be adequate for intermittent work; a heavy-use household or team may exhaust it quickly.
Do not assume that “Unlimited” removes every restriction. The plan still operates under Starlink’s service terms, location rules and any water or travel limitations shown for your market. The cited service summary also states that advertised speeds and uninterrupted use are not guaranteed.

Roam documentation identifies Standby Mode and in-motion use as plan features, but eligibility can depend on the plan and market. Treat them as items to verify on the current offer rather than universal Mini capabilities. If you need connectivity while a vehicle or vessel is moving, confirm that the exact plan explicitly permits it before relying on the service for navigation, dispatch or safety communications.

Coverage on land, across borders and on water
Countrywide use
Roam is intended to support countrywide mobility where Starlink service is active. “Countrywide” does not mean every point has service: the network must cover the location, the account must be eligible there and the terminal still needs a usable view of the sky.
International travel
International use requires plan-specific compliance and travel registration. The cited Starlink Help Center policy says Roam Unlimited includes up to 30 days outside the registered home country at a time. That is a duration limit for the stated plan and policy, not a blanket rule for every Roam tier. Check the current policy for your account before crossing a border, and update registration details when Starlink requires it.
Coastal, inland-waterway and open-ocean use
Water coverage is divided into coastal, inland-waterway and open-ocean contexts, with separate limits and optional modes. A plan that works at a campsite beside a lake should not automatically be treated as approved for offshore use. Confirm the plan’s water eligibility, any required mode and the geographic boundary before departure. Keep another communications method for situations where satellite service is unavailable or restricted.

Sky view is a physical requirement
Buildings, trees, cliffs and vehicle structures can block the antenna’s view even when the service map shows coverage. Place Mini in an open position, use the 15 m cable to move the terminal away from obstructions and avoid assuming that a stronger indoor Wi-Fi signal can compensate for a blocked antenna. A clear sky view and an appropriate power source are the two practical prerequisites that matter at every location.
Performance: useful broadband, not a guaranteed speed
The March 2025 Roam Critical Information Summary gives estimated ranges of 30–100 Mbps download, 10–30 Mbps upload and latency below 99 ms. These are service estimates, not a personal performance guarantee. Congestion, location, obstructions, weather and network conditions can change the result, and the same summary states that stated speeds and uninterrupted use are not guaranteed.
Use the connection for the tasks your allowance and power budget support. A short work session may be practical on a modest battery; long video meetings, large uploads and multiple users increase both data consumption and the time the terminal must remain powered. Test at the actual site before making it your only link for a critical operation.

- Check service availability for the country and address. Confirm that Starlink accepts the intended service location and that the relevant Roam option is offered there.
- Define the travel pattern. Decide whether you need local mobility only, cross-border travel, Standby Mode, in-motion use or water access. Verify each requirement against the current plan terms.
- Select the allowance. Compare your expected data use with the available 5 GB, 50 GB, Unlimited or other market-specific choices. Do not rely on a plan name seen in another country.
- Plan the power system. Use Mini’s 25–40 W average draw for energy calculations. If using the USB-C accessory, select a source that explicitly supports 100 W at 20 V/5 A.
- Pack the complete hardware. Include Mini, its kickstand, the 15 m cable and the chosen power cable or DC supply. The configured hardware weighs 1.53 kg according to the specification sheet.
- Place the terminal with an open sky view. Use the cable length to separate the antenna from trees, walls, roofs or vehicle structures.
- Power the terminal and connect devices. Mini’s integrated Wi-Fi can serve devices directly, eliminating the need for a separate router for a basic setup.
- Test before depending on it. Check connectivity at the exact campsite, work site or marina position, then observe how quickly the battery or power station is being used.
- Record travel constraints. Keep the plan’s international and water-use conditions with your trip information so a border crossing or change from land to sea does not become an unexpected outage.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
Buying a phone power bank because its capacity looks large
Milliamp-hours do not show whether the bank can provide 20 V/5 A USB-PD. Fix the mistake by checking the output profile and the accessory requirement; if the profile is absent, choose a documented compatible source.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCalculating runtime from battery capacity alone
A 500 Wh label does not mean 500 Wh reaches Mini. Apply an efficiency factor, reserve capacity and account for any other loads. Treat the result as an estimate rather than a promised duration.

Assuming a Roam plan is identical everywhere
Allowance names, prices, travel rights and water options vary by country and can change. Use the local order page and current Help Center terms at the time of purchase.
Placing the terminal under cover
A porch, roof rack or tree canopy can obstruct the sky view. Move Mini into the open and use its cable to keep people and equipment in a more convenient location.
Interpreting advertised speeds as a service-level guarantee
The published 30–100 Mbps download, 10–30 Mbps upload and sub-99 ms latency figures are estimates. Plan critical work with a backup connection and enough battery reserve to handle interruptions.
Taking a land setup offshore without checking the mode
Coastal, inland-waterway and open-ocean access have separate limits and optional modes. Verify the exact plan and operating area before sailing.
Which setup fits your use case?
Weekend camping and occasional remote work
Mini is well suited to this pattern when the pack weight is acceptable and you can carry a power source sized for the work session. A smaller Roam allowance may be sufficient if use is limited to email, browsing and a few calls. Calculate energy for the entire trip rather than only for the terminal.
Frequent road travel across one country
Mini’s integrated Wi-Fi and 15 m cable reduce the amount of networking equipment to carry. Choose a Roam option that supports the expected data volume and verify coverage along the routes you use. Keep the terminal outside obstructions when parked.
Cross-border travel
Confirm international eligibility and registration requirements before departure. Roam Unlimited’s cited policy permits up to 30 days outside the registered home country at a time, but that allowance should not be generalized to other plans.

Determine whether your route is coastal, inland-waterway or open ocean, then check the plan’s specific permission and any optional mode. Do not treat ordinary countrywide land coverage as evidence of offshore coverage.
Long-duration field work
Prioritize a power station with published usable watt-hours, compatible outputs and a practical recharge method. Use the 25–40 W range to model the longest operating day, add your other equipment and retain reserve capacity.
