Choose a portable power station when you need movable, plug-in backup for selected devices and want the lowest installation commitment. Choose a whole-home battery system when you want automatic backup through designated household circuits, higher sustained output, and equipment permanently tied to your electrical system. The deciding figures are not capacity alone: compare usable kilowatt-hours (kWh), continuous and surge kilowatts (kW), the circuits you need to run, recharge options, and the complete installed cost.

Portable power station and whole-home battery: the practical difference

A portable power station is a battery, inverter, charging system, and outlets in a movable enclosure. You connect appliances, electronics, or extension cords directly to it. Some large models can connect to a home’s wiring through a compatible transfer device or smart electrical panel, but that changes the project from simple plug-in use to an installation requiring compatibility checks and, in many cases, licensed electrical work.

A whole-home battery backup is permanently installed equipment. It connects to the service equipment, a transfer switch or energy-management panel, and selected circuits—or, with sufficient capacity and power, a broader set of household loads. During an outage, the system detects the loss of grid power and supplies the backed-up circuits automatically. It remains in place, needs an approved installation, and is priced as a system rather than as a battery box alone.

Large portable systems can overlap with residential batteries. The label “portable” does not guarantee low capacity, and “whole-home” does not guarantee that every appliance will run indefinitely. Compare the complete configuration, not just the category name.

kWh and kW answer different questions

kWh determines how long energy can last

Kilowatt-hours measure stored energy. If a load draws 1 kW continuously, 10 kWh of usable storage would theoretically provide 10 hours before conversion losses and reserve limits. Real runtime is shorter or longer according to the actual load, inverter efficiency, battery temperature, battery-management limits, and whether the system reserves capacity for protection.

kW determines what can run at once

Kilowatts measure the rate of delivery. A refrigerator, sump pump, well pump, furnace blower, air conditioner, or other motor can draw a starting surge several times higher than its running power. A battery with ample kWh can still shut down or refuse to start that appliance if its inverter’s continuous or surge rating is too low. Ask for both ratings and compare them with the nameplate and starting requirements of every motor-driven load.

A simple planning calculation

Estimate runtime with this planning relationship:

Approximate hours = usable battery kWh × overall efficiency ÷ average load kW

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The result is an estimate, not a guarantee. Loads cycle on and off, and an inverter consumes some power even when the connected appliance is idle. Use measured or manufacturer-provided load data where possible, and leave margin for starting surges and unexpected devices.

Side-by-side comparison

Decision factor Portable power station Whole-home battery backup
Mobility Designed to be moved and used at different locations; weight and wheels vary. Fixed to the property and not intended for routine relocation.
Usable energy Ranges from small units to expandable systems; verify usable rather than headline capacity. EnergySage says most residential batteries store 10–20 kWh; one unit may cover essential loads for approximately one to three days, depending on connected loads.
Continuous and surge output Model-specific inverter limits; check both figures before connecting refrigerators, pumps, compressors, or heating equipment. Specified as part of the installed system and sized for the backed-up circuits; service-panel and transfer equipment also have limits.
Appliances or circuits supported Directly supports devices plugged into its outlets. Household circuits require compatible transfer equipment or a smart panel. Supplies the circuits selected during design; a larger system can support more loads, but “whole home” still depends on capacity and output.
Transfer behavior Manual plug-in operation is typical. Automatic household backup requires additional compatible equipment. Automatic transfer is normally part of the design, subject to the selected panel and installation.
Expandability Some models accept extra battery modules or parallel units; confirm supported combinations. Additional batteries may be possible, but the inverter, wiring, wall space, permits, and service capacity must support the expansion.
Solar or generator recharge Many units accept solar input; some accept an engine generator or vehicle charging. Check input limits and connector compatibility. Can be paired with solar and, in some designs, a generator. Controls must be configured so sources operate safely during an outage.
Installation and permitting None for plug-in use. A transfer switch, smart panel, or hardwired connection can require permits and professional installation. Electrical installation, permits, code compliance, and sometimes utility interconnection are part of the project.
Warranty Varies by manufacturer, model, operating conditions, and cycle limits; read the written terms. Varies by battery, inverter, installer, throughput, and retention provisions; obtain the complete warranty documents.
Total cost Equipment price can be a few thousand dollars, but an integrated setup adds panels, wiring, labor, and permits. Compare an installed quote that includes equipment, panel hardware, labor, permitting, utility requirements, and electrical upgrades.

How much capacity does a home actually need?

Start with an essential-load list instead of trying to match the home’s daily electricity use. Typical priorities include refrigeration, medical equipment, communications, lighting, a garage-door opener, a sump pump, a furnace control and blower, or a well pump. Decide whether heating, cooking, water heating, air conditioning, and electric vehicle charging are essential; those loads can dominate both power and energy requirements.

EnergySage’s 2026 guidance says most residential batteries store 10–20 kWh. It describes a single unit as capable of covering essential loads for approximately one to three days, but that range depends entirely on what is connected and how it is operated. It is not a promise that an average household can use normal electricity for three days.

For scale, EnergySage cites the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s figure of about 29 kWh of household use per day. A 13.5 kWh battery therefore does not represent a normal full day’s consumption for a typical U.S. home before losses; it is more commonly planned around selected essential circuits. Cutting discretionary loads, scheduling high-power appliances, and adding solar recharge can extend an outage plan.

Account for starting surges

  • Record the running watts and, where available, locked-rotor or starting watts for each motor or compressor.
  • Identify loads that may start simultaneously, such as a refrigerator and sump pump.
  • Compare their combined demand with the inverter’s continuous rating and each appliance’s starting requirement with its surge rating.
  • Ask the installer whether a soft starter, load-shedding relay, or separate circuit is needed for an air conditioner or pump.

Cost: compare complete systems, not battery labels

Installed residential battery benchmarks

EnergySage reports an average U.S. installed price of $15,647 for a 13.5 kWh system in the first half of 2026, before incentives. This is a marketplace average, not a guaranteed local quote. Site access, electrical-panel condition, labor rates, equipment choices, and permitting can move the price substantially.

For a two- to three-battery whole-home configuration, EnergySage gives an estimated installed range of $24,000–$40,000 in 2026. The range is an estimate whose suitability depends on the home’s loads, battery and inverter configuration, and installation scope. It should not be compared with the sticker price of a portable station that excludes transfer hardware and labor.

Portable-station equipment prices

A manufacturer product page currently surfaces a U.S. price of $4,199 for an EcoFlow DELTA Pro Ultra base system, with different prices for bundles that include additional batteries or a home panel. Prices, inventory, and bundle contents are volatile. Treat that figure as equipment pricing only unless the specific listing says it includes the panel, installation, permits, and electrical work.

Questions to ask about every quote

  • Is the stated capacity nominal or usable, and how much reserve is held back?
  • What are the continuous and surge output ratings at the intended temperature and configuration?
  • Does the price include a transfer switch or smart panel, critical-load subpanel, wiring, disconnects, and communications equipment?
  • Are design, permitting, inspection, utility interconnection, and disposal fees included?
  • Is an electrical-panel upgrade required, and is that work included?
  • Does the quote include commissioning, homeowner training, and post-installation support?

Installation paths and what each requires

Path 1: plug devices directly into a portable station

  1. List the devices you intend to run and their running and starting wattage.
  2. Place the station in a dry, ventilated location away from fuel, moisture, and heat sources.
  3. Charge it from the grid before an expected outage; verify the charging cable and input mode.
  4. During an outage, connect only the planned loads, using heavy-duty cords rated for the current.
  5. Monitor the station’s remaining percentage, output watts, temperature, and alarms. Disconnect nonessential loads before the inverter reaches its limit.

This approach does not energize wall outlets or permanently wired circuits elsewhere in the house. Never backfeed a household outlet with a male-to-male cord; that can energize utility lines and create a lethal hazard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Path 2: portable station with a smart home panel

A compatible smart panel can connect a large portable station to designated household circuits and provide automatic control. The panel must be installed before use. EcoFlow states that the Smart Home Panel 2 installation fee depends on the site assessment and that only a specified bundle includes installation service. Confirm exactly which bundle you are buying and whether the installer, permit, inspection, and panel work are included.

  1. Have a qualified installer verify the station, panel, service voltage, grounding, neutral arrangement, and supported circuits.
  2. Choose the circuits to back up and confirm their combined continuous and starting demand.
  3. Obtain any required permit and utility approval before work begins.
  4. Install and commission the panel, disconnects, communications, and station connection according to the manufacturer’s instructions and local code.
  5. Test a simulated outage, automatic transfer, overload behavior, and restoration to grid power.

Path 3: fixed residential battery

  1. Complete a load audit and decide whether you need essential-load backup or broader whole-home coverage.
  2. Get multiple itemized quotes. EnergySage advises checking whether each bid includes permitting, utility interconnection, and a possible electrical-panel upgrade.
  3. Confirm the battery location, clearances, temperature range, fire-code requirements, and service access.
  4. Approve the design, then allow the installer to pull permits and schedule utility or inspection steps.
  5. After commissioning, test the transfer sequence, backed-up circuits, monitoring app, shutdown procedure, and warranty registration.

EnergySage’s 2026 guide says that, after contracts are signed and permits are pulled, most battery installations are completed in one day by a two-person crew. That describes the physical installation stage; local permitting, utility rules, equipment availability, and site conditions can extend the overall schedule.

Solar, generators, and recharge during a long outage

A battery without a charging source is a finite reserve. Grid charging stops when the grid is down, so runtime eventually ends even if the battery is large. Compatible solar can recharge storage during daylight and repeat the cycle, but clouds, shading, panel size, charge-controller limits, battery state of charge, and household demand determine how much energy is recovered.

For a portable station, verify the maximum solar input voltage, current, connector type, and whether charging is allowed while loads are running. For a fixed battery, confirm that the solar inverter and islanding controls can operate safely when the grid is disconnected. A generator may be another recharge path, but it must be connected through approved equipment and operated according to local rules; never improvise a connection to house wiring.

Product example: an expandable portable system that crosses the categories

EcoFlow lists the DELTA Pro Ultra as starting at 6 kWh and 7.2 kW, with compatible expansion advertised up to 90 kWh and 21.6 kW. The Smart Home Panel 2 adds household-circuit control and automatic-backup features. These specifications show that the portable-station category includes systems capable of substantial household integration.

They do not mean that one 6 kWh unit will power every home, nor that the maximum expansion is achieved without additional batteries, inverters, wiring, space, and installation. Evaluate the exact bundle, usable capacity, output in the chosen configuration, supported circuits, solar input, warranty, and installed price. A base-station price and a whole-home quote are different purchasing decisions.

Which option fits common situations?

Apartment, rental, or temporary residence

A plug-in portable station avoids permanent electrical work and can move with you. Limit the plan to devices you can safely connect directly, and verify building rules for battery storage and charging.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short outages and a few critical devices

A portable station is usually the lower-commitment choice when the priority is a refrigerator, internet equipment, lights, phones, and a small medical device. Select enough surge output for compressors and pumps rather than choosing by kWh alone.

Frequent outages with automatic operation

A fixed battery or a portable system paired with a compatible smart panel can transfer selected circuits automatically. Compare the complete installed scope; the convenience comes from the panel, controls, and electrical work as much as from the battery itself.

Multi-day outages or medically critical loads

Build an essential-load schedule, add margin for starting surges, and plan a recharge source such as compatible solar. Consider redundancy or additional capacity if an interruption could threaten health or water supply. Have the design reviewed by a qualified electrician.

High-demand homes

Electric resistance heat, central air conditioning, well pumps, electric cooking, and vehicle charging can require large continuous and surge output. A single residential battery may not support these loads simultaneously; request a load calculation and an itemized multi-battery design.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Buying by kWh only: Check continuous and surge kW, especially for motors and compressors.
  • Assuming “whole home” means unlimited use: Confirm the backed-up circuits, transfer equipment, and load-shedding rules.
  • Comparing a portable sticker price with an installed quote: Add the panel, wiring, permits, labor, inspection, and any service upgrade to the portable configuration.
  • Ignoring usable capacity: Ask what energy remains available after reserve limits and conversion losses.
  • Forgetting recharge: A battery without solar or another approved source cannot replenish itself during a grid outage.
  • Skipping surge testing: Test pumps, compressors, and heating equipment under realistic simultaneous conditions.
  • Backfeeding a receptacle: Use a listed transfer switch or smart panel installed by a qualified professional.
  • Assuming a national average is your quote: Get multiple local, itemized bids and verify permitting and utility requirements.

How to make the decision

  1. Define the outage: Estimate likely duration, weather, and whether automatic operation is important.
  2. List essential loads: Include running watts, starting surges, and which circuits they occupy.
  3. Set the operating boundary: Decide whether direct plug-in backup is sufficient or whether wall circuits must remain live automatically.
  4. Size both dimensions: Select enough usable kWh for the planned hours and enough continuous/surge kW for the largest simultaneous load.
  5. Choose a recharge plan: Compare grid charging, compatible solar, and any approved generator input.
  6. Compare total installed cost: Put portable equipment, panel hardware, labor, permits, electrical upgrades, and warranties in the same worksheet.
  7. Validate locally: Confirm code, utility, fire-safety, placement, and insurance requirements before ordering.
  8. Test the finished system: Simulate an outage and verify transfer, overload protection, monitoring, recharge, and restoration.

As Noah Kittner, an associate professor at the University of North Carolina’s Gillings School of Global Public Health, told the Associated Press on July 14, 2026: “If you’re deciding between different backup power options for what you need, different conditions are going to require different elements, like a heat wave versus a hurricane.” The useful implication is to design for the actual hazard and loads rather than selecting a battery from a single capacity number.
