Choose a power bank for lightweight USB charging of phones, earbuds, tablets, and laptops that accept USB-C Power Delivery (PD). Choose a portable power station when you need household-style AC outlets, longer backup, or enough wattage and stored energy to run appliances. The right choice depends on your devices, their power draw, and how long they must run—not on the largest capacity number on a box.

The fundamental difference: USB charging versus appliance power

Both products store energy in rechargeable batteries, but they deliver it in different ways.

What a power bank does

A power bank is a compact battery designed primarily for USB output. Typical capacities cited by Anker SOLIX UK range from 5,000 to 30,000 mAh. Belkin examples span 18.5 Wh to 92.5 Wh. You connect a phone, earbuds, tablet, handheld console, camera, or compatible laptop directly to a USB port and continue using the device while it charges.

Power banks are usually the better everyday-carry option because they are smaller, lighter, and simpler than a station. Their limitation is output: they cannot provide a normal AC socket unless a particular model includes a small inverter, and even then the available wattage is generally unsuitable for larger appliances.

What a portable power station does

A portable power station combines a larger battery with an inverter and several output types. In addition to USB ports, it normally has one or more AC outlets and may include 12-volt DC sockets. Anker SOLIX UK describes roughly 200–300 Wh as a starting range for compact stations, although there is no universal capacity boundary between the categories.

The inverter lets you run equipment with a conventional plug: a laptop that cannot charge over USB-C, a monitor, networking gear, lights, a small television, or selected camping appliances. Stations are consequently heavier and more expensive to carry, but they provide considerably more stored energy and higher output than a pocket bank.

A quick decision method

  1. List every device you want to power. Record whether each one uses USB, USB-C PD, 12-volt DC, or AC.
  2. Check the required input. For USB-C equipment, note the accepted PD voltage and wattage. For AC equipment, read the charger or appliance label for running watts and, if given, startup or surge watts.
  3. Estimate how long the devices must run. A phone top-up is a short charging event; a router or medical device may need continuous operation for hours.
  4. Choose the smallest category that meets both requirements. Use a bank if all loads are USB and its output is sufficient. Move to a station if any essential load needs AC, exceeds the bank’s wattage, or must run for an extended period.
  5. Check physical limits. Compare size, weight, recharge time, and whether you can realistically carry or store the unit.

How to charge a laptop reliably

A USB-C plug alone does not prove that a bank can charge a laptop. The laptop, charger, bank, and cable must all support a compatible USB Power Delivery profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify the laptop’s input

Read the laptop manufacturer’s specifications or the original charger. Look for an explicit USB-C PD input and its wattage, such as 45 W, 65 W, or another stated value. A USB-C port used only for data, display output, or low-power accessories will not accept charging.

Verify the bank’s single-port output

Use the output table for the exact model and port. A bank advertised as 100 W may provide that figure only through one USB-C port. When several ports are active, the total is often shared and the laptop may receive less. MSI advises checking the single-port rating, multi-port behavior, and the device’s required wattage rather than relying on the headline maximum.

Use an appropriately rated cable

The cable can be the bottleneck. Use a USB-C cable rated for the wattage you need; a cable that supports only lower power can make a high-output bank charge slowly or not at all. Confirm the cable rating as well as the connector shape.

Allow for real operating conditions

Output can fall when the bank is nearly empty, when thermal protection activates, or when its battery has aged. Heat, simultaneous charging of other devices, and the laptop’s workload also affect the result. If the laptop is drawing more power than the bank can supply, it may charge slowly, hold its current level, or continue to discharge while plugged in.

Capacity: read watt-hours, not just milliamp-hours

Watt-hours (Wh) describe stored energy in a way that can be compared across batteries. Milliamp-hours (mAh) describe charge at a particular cell voltage, so two products with the same mAh can store different amounts of energy.

Convert a bank’s mAh rating

The basic conversion is:

Wh = mAh × voltage ÷ 1,000

Belkin illustrates the calculation with a 25,000 mAh bank at 3.7 V: 25,000 × 3.7 ÷ 1,000 = 92.5 Wh. That is a cell-energy conversion example, not a promise that 92.5 Wh will reach your device.

Account for usable energy

Energy is lost while the battery voltage is converted to USB or AC output and while the device’s charging circuit operates. HP gives a general estimate that a power bank may deliver about 60–70% of its rated capacity in practical use, with losses affected by conversion circuitry, temperature, and battery condition. Treat that range as guidance, not a universal specification for every model.

Estimate continuous runtime

For a device that draws power continuously, use:

Approximate runtime in hours = capacity in Wh ÷ load in W

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then allow headroom for inverter losses, changing loads, and the fact that devices rarely draw a perfectly constant wattage. A 60 W load operated for four hours requires about 240 Wh before those losses are included, so a station rated near 240 Wh would have little practical margin.

Estimate charging events

For a phone or laptop that is charged and then unplugged, compare the device battery’s Wh with the bank’s Wh. The result is only an upper-bound comparison because charging losses and the device’s own use reduce the number of complete recharges.

TechRadar’s 2026 station guide uses 245 Wh for the smallest station in its comparison and 20 Wh for an iPhone 17 Pro Max as editorial examples. Those figures are examples for that guide, not fixed specifications for every station or phone generation.

Output power and stored energy answer different questions

Capacity tells you how long a source may last; output tells you what it can run at one time. A large-capacity station with a low inverter rating may still fail to start a high-wattage appliance. Conversely, a high-output unit with a small battery may run that appliance only briefly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Continuous and surge ratings

Check the station’s continuous AC wattage for the appliance’s normal draw. Motors, compressors, pumps, and some power supplies can demand a short startup surge several times higher than their running wattage. Confirm that the station specifies enough surge capability for the actual load; do not assume a generic “peak” number guarantees compatibility.

USB output is port-specific

For a bank or station, identify the exact USB-C port you will use and its PD profile. Also check the total-output table when multiple devices are connected. A unit may reduce one port’s wattage to stay within its thermal and electrical limits.

Compare the specifications that matter

Power-bank checklist

Specification Why it matters
Wh capacity (or mAh with cell voltage) Allows a meaningful energy comparison and a realistic estimate of charging events
USB-C PD support Required for many modern laptops and for faster compatible charging
Single-port wattage Determines whether the connected device receives enough power
Total output with several ports active Shows how much power remains when charging multiple devices
Cable rating Prevents a lower-rated cable from limiting the connection
Dimensions and weight Determines whether it is practical for daily carrying or travel

Portable-station checklist

Specification Why it matters
Wh capacity Sets the energy budget for your list of devices and required hours
Continuous AC watts Must cover the appliance’s normal running load
Surge or startup capability May be essential for motors, compressors, and other demanding loads
AC, USB, and DC ports Determines which devices can connect without extra adapters
Weight and size Defines portability and storage requirements
Recharge inputs and time Shows how quickly the station can be restored between uses
Solar compatibility Useful only when you have a compatible panel and suitable sunlight
UPS behavior Matters if equipment must continue through a brief mains interruption

Which option fits common situations?

Phone, earbuds, and small USB accessories

Use a power bank. Prioritize a size you will actually carry, enough ports for your devices, and an output protocol they support. A very large bank offers more energy but can become inconvenient for daily use; capacity is useful only if the unit is with you when needed.

USB-C laptop on a train, plane, or remote workday

Start with a USB-C PD power bank. Match its single-port wattage to the laptop’s stated input, use a correctly rated cable, and estimate how many hours or top-ups you need. If the laptop cannot charge through USB-C, a station with a suitable AC inverter is the more practical category, though it will be much heavier.

Several devices at a desk

A bank can handle a phone, tablet, and compatible laptop if its total-output limits are sufficient. Choose a station when one device needs AC or when simultaneous loads exceed the bank’s USB output. Check how the station allocates power across AC and USB ports; the advertised maximum may not be available on every output at once.

Camping

A station is appropriate when you need AC lighting, camera chargers, a monitor, a small refrigerator, or other equipment that cannot use ordinary USB. Build a device-and-hours list, calculate approximate Wh, then add margin for conversion losses and variable loads. Consider a compatible solar panel only if off-grid recharge is genuinely useful; verify the station’s voltage, current, connector, and solar-input limits.

Home outage backup

Use a station when you need to keep networking equipment, lights, laptops, or selected appliances running. Confirm each appliance’s running and startup demand, and decide whether the station’s UPS mode provides the transfer behavior your equipment requires. A station is not automatically a whole-home generator: its AC output, battery size, and number of outlets impose hard limits.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Portability, recharging, and continuity

Portability is part of capacity. A station stores more energy because it uses a larger battery and inverter, so it occupies more space and weighs more. Carrying one solely for occasional phone top-ups usually adds bulk without solving a problem a small bank already handles.

Compare how each product recharges from wall power, a vehicle, or another source. For off-grid use, solar input can extend endurance, but only when the panel is electrically compatible and conditions provide enough sunlight. Treat the advertised recharge time as model-specific; input power, temperature, and remaining battery level affect the actual result.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Choosing by mAh alone: convert to Wh or compare products at the same stated voltage.
  • Assuming USB-C means laptop charging: verify USB PD support, the port’s wattage, and the laptop’s accepted input.
  • Using an underrated cable: match the cable’s power rating to the intended output.
  • Ignoring shared output: read the multi-port table instead of assuming every port can deliver its maximum simultaneously.
  • Confusing Wh with watts: capacity estimates duration; output ratings determine whether a load can run at all.
  • Forgetting startup demand: check surge requirements for motors, compressors, and other non-linear loads.
  • Expecting the full rated capacity: allow for conversion losses, heat, battery age, and the device’s own charging losses.
  • Buying a station without an hours estimate: list loads and durations before selecting capacity.
  • Paying for solar capability you will not use: include it only when off-grid recharge and panel compatibility matter.

Troubleshooting when charging or runtime disappoints

The laptop says “plugged in” but the battery still falls

Confirm that the bank’s active port meets the laptop’s required wattage. Disconnect other devices, try a cable with the correct rating, and check whether the bank has entered a low-charge or thermal-protection mode. A demanding laptop workload can consume more power than the bank supplies.

The station shuts down when an appliance starts

Compare the appliance’s startup surge with the station’s surge rating and verify the continuous wattage. If the appliance exceeds either limit, use a larger station or a different power source; repeatedly resetting an overloaded inverter is not a safe workaround.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Runtime is shorter than the Wh calculation

Recalculate using the appliance’s measured or labeled running watts, then account for inverter efficiency, standby draw, temperature, and changing load. The Wh ÷ W equation is an estimate, not a guaranteed runtime.

Charging slows when several devices are connected

Read the station or bank’s total-output specification. Shared power limits, heat protection, and a nearly depleted battery can reduce one port’s available wattage. Charge the highest-priority device alone if necessary.

Air travel and battery safety

Airline and aviation rules vary by route, carrier, battery type, and the Wh value printed on the unit. The available guidance for this comparison does not establish a single current limit that applies everywhere. Before flying, check the airline and the official aviation authority for your itinerary, keep the Wh label legible, and follow instructions about carry-on storage, terminals, and damaged or swollen batteries. Never pack a battery that shows physical damage or unusual heat.

Making the final choice

Buy the smallest power bank that meets your USB devices’ PD, wattage, cable, and energy requirements when portability is the priority. Choose a portable power station when an AC appliance, a non-USB-C laptop, several larger loads, or multi-hour outage and camping backup makes the bank’s output or capacity inadequate. Compare Wh, watts, ports, recharge options, weight, and any UPS or solar features against your actual load list, and leave room for conversion losses rather than treating a rated number as guaranteed usable energy.
