A portable power station is often the more practical choice for a limited set of essentials when quiet, indoor use and simple setup matter—and you can recharge it. A portable gas generator can suit larger loads or longer operation when you have fuel and a safe outdoor location. Start by listing the appliances you need, checking their power requirements, and estimating how long you may be without electricity.
How to choose between a power station and a gas generator
The right backup depends on your loads, outage length, replenishment options and where you can operate the equipment. As Noah Kittner, an associate professor at the University of North Carolina’s Gillings School of Global Public Health, told the Associated Press, “If you’re deciding between different backup power options for what you need, different conditions are going to require different elements, like a heat wave versus a hurricane.”

- List critical devices. Separate must-run items—such as a refrigerator, medical equipment, lights, fans, modem or phone chargers—from things you can do without.
- Check the electrical requirements. Compare each device’s running watts with the unit’s continuous output, and account for higher startup demand where applicable. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for both the appliance and backup unit.
- Estimate the outage duration. A short interruption with modest loads presents a different problem from a multiday outage.
- Plan how to replenish power. A power station needs stored charge or a way to recharge; a generator needs an adequate fuel supply and safe refueling arrangements.
- Confirm a safe operating location. If you cannot place a fuel generator outdoors with the required clearance, do not use it.
What each option can power—and for how long
Portable power stations
A battery power station can be useful for smaller appliances, lights and fans, and avoids combustion fumes during operation. Depending on its output and capacity, it may also support devices such as computers, modems, televisions or a freezer. Whether it can run a refrigerator depends on that refrigerator’s electrical demand, startup needs, the power station’s output and how much energy is stored; check the specifications rather than assuming every unit can do it.
Capacity and output are different constraints: stored energy affects how long devices can run, while continuous and surge output affect which devices the station can support. Some stations can recharge from solar panels, but charging time and compatibility depend on the equipment and conditions. A depleted station cannot provide backup power until it is recharged.

Portable gas generators
A portable fuel generator may support some larger appliances if its output is sufficient, but portable models typically are not sized to power an entire home. The Associated Press reported that conventional portable generators can run for 6 to 12 hours or longer, depending on load and fuel consumption. That is a broad category estimate, not a runtime promise for a particular generator; actual runtime varies with the model, load and fuel supply.
Fuel availability matters especially during extended outages. In an Associated Press report dated July 14, 2026, RMI managing director Mark Dyson said, “The standard designs for fuel tank capacity are no longer sufficient to deal with multiday outages, which we’re increasingly seeing due to extreme weather.” Treat that as his assessment of fuel-tank capacity and outage trends, not a universal runtime measurement.

Operating location, emissions and safety
Battery power stations do not produce toxic combustion fumes while operating and can be used indoors, according to the EPA’s power-outage guidance. Fuel generators produce carbon monoxide (CO), an odorless, potentially deadly gas, and must be operated outside. The CDC says to place generators at least 20 feet from windows, doors and vents.

- Never run a generator inside a home, basement or garage—even with doors or windows open. Do not use one in an attached garage, shed or other enclosed or partly enclosed space.
- Use a working CO alarm in the home with battery power or battery backup. An alarm is an added safeguard, not permission to operate a generator in an unsafe location.
- Do not heat a home with a gas range or oven. The EPA also warns against using unvented combustion appliances such as barbecues, hibachis or camp stoves indoors.

Noise, setup, maintenance and ownership cost
A power station avoids engine exhaust and the routine engine care associated with fuel generators. It is generally a simpler indoor setup for compatible loads, but you still need to keep it charged and ensure its ports and output suit the devices you plan to use. A fuel generator requires outdoor placement, fuel handling and ongoing maintenance; its engine also runs while producing power. Actual noise, maintenance schedules, purchase prices and operating costs vary by model, and there is no single category-wide figure that establishes which option costs less over time.
Before buying, compare the specific unit’s usable capacity, continuous and surge output, charging inputs, ports and manufacturer limits with your intended appliances. For a generator, also verify its fuel type, consumption information and maintenance requirements. For a power station, verify compatible charging methods and the time and conditions required to recharge it. A compatible solar panel may help replenish some stations, but it does not remove the need to check charging specifications or plan for periods without suitable sunlight.

Which option fits common outage plans?
| Outage plan or constraint | More likely fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor backup for a modest set of electronics, lights or fans | Portable power station | It produces no combustion fumes during operation and can be used indoors, subject to its output and capacity. |
| Higher electrical demand, with a safe outdoor operating site | Portable fuel generator | Some models can run larger appliances if their output supports the loads; they cannot be used indoors. |
| Outage expected to last beyond the unit’s stored energy or available fuel | Depends on replenishment access | A power station needs charging; a generator needs fuel. Neither category guarantees uninterrupted power without a workable replenishment plan. |
| No safe place outdoors at least 20 feet from windows, doors and vents | Portable power station | Do not operate a fuel generator at an unsafe location, regardless of a CO alarm. |
These are conditional fits, not a model-to-model performance test. Capacity, price, runtime, noise and maintenance cannot be compared reliably without specifications for particular units and a defined set of loads.
