Watt-hours (Wh) measure how much energy a portable power station stores; watts (W) measure how quickly it can deliver or use energy. To choose a station, match its continuous output and startup capability to your appliances, then use usable energy—not the headline capacity alone—to estimate runtime.

What the main power station specifications mean

Several ratings appear together on a power station’s label or product page, but they describe different things. EcoFlow’s manufacturer guide to portable power station specs distinguishes stored capacity from the power a unit can deliver.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Capacity (Wh or kWh): the manufacturer’s stated quantity of stored energy. One kilowatt-hour equals 1,000 watt-hours. Capacity indicates how much energy is available in principle, not the largest appliance the station can power.
  • Continuous AC output (W): the maximum ongoing AC power the manufacturer rates the unit to deliver. An appliance or combined set of appliances that exceeds this rating may not run. Check the sum of devices you expect to use at the same time.
  • Surge or startup power (W): a short-duration allowance for loads that draw extra power when starting. The meaning and duration depend on the model, so do not treat a surge rating as power the unit can sustain continuously.
  • Charging input (W): the rate at which energy can enter the station under specified conditions. It is not the same as the output available to appliances.
  • Expandable capacity: some models support additional batteries or linked equipment. Compatibility—and whether expansion changes output—varies by model.

In other words, a high-capacity battery may store enough energy for a long run but still have an inverter whose output is too low for a particular appliance.

How to check whether a power station can run your devices

  1. Find each device’s wattage. Check its nameplate or manual. Jackery’s buying guide advises checking appliance wattage and choosing output above the appliance requirement.
  2. Add the loads that will run together. Compare the combined simultaneous load with the station’s continuous AC output, not just the rating of the largest single appliance.
  3. Check startup demand. Motors and other inductive loads may briefly draw more power when starting than while running. Compare the appliance’s startup requirement, if stated, with the exact station’s documented surge rating and its duration. Running watts alone may not establish compatibility.
  4. Confirm connections and setup. Check outlet types, voltage, USB or DC ports, charging inputs, expansion support, and required accessories for the exact model and regional version.

Manufacturer figures are model-specific. For example, Jackery’s buying guide lists the Explorer 1000 v2 at 1,070 Wh capacity and 1,500 W AC output. Those are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent measurements; confirm them against the current listing for the model and region you are considering.

How to estimate runtime

For a first estimate, divide usable energy in watt-hours by the load in watts. Jackery’s explanation of startup and continuous power gives the formula as rated energy capacity after conversion divided by appliance power.

For example, a hypothetical 500 Wh of usable output serving a steady 100 W load gives 5 hours by simple division. This is arithmetic, not a tested result for a particular product. A real station’s AC runtime may be shorter because conversion and operating losses reduce available energy. Changing loads, startup peaks, reserve settings, and automatic shutdown behavior can also affect how long devices run.

What to compare What to check
Energy duration Stated Wh or kWh and realistic usable energy for your expected load profile.
Load capability Continuous AC watts, relevant surge rating and duration, and the combined load of devices used at once.
Connections Outlet types, voltage, USB and DC ports, and input options required by your devices.
Expansion and recharging Whether compatible batteries or solar input are supported, the maximum input, and any extra hardware required.
Practical constraints Size, weight, charging time, region-specific outlets or voltage, and current price.

Do not assume one product’s figures or accessory compatibility apply across its brand’s lineup. EcoFlow’s DELTA Pro product page, for instance, describes a single-unit capacity starting at 3.6 kWh and an AC output range presented as 3,600 W–7,200 W. The page associates higher-output scenarios with configured features and linked equipment, so the upper figure should not be read as an ordinary standalone continuous rating without checking the detailed specifications and setup conditions.

For model-specific details beyond headline capacity and output, consult the exact product documentation. Jackery’s Explorer 5000 Plus basic information, for example, covers that model’s battery and solar-input specifications.

What a spec sheet can—and cannot—tell you

Capacity, output, and input ratings help determine whether a station is suitable on paper, but they do not establish a guaranteed runtime for your own appliances. Published specifications are not independent measurements, and runtime depends on the load and operating conditions. No category-wide independent runtime figure is established here; base your estimate on the exact model’s documentation and your expected use.
