A 900Wh portable power station does not run every device for the same length of time. For a quick estimate with a steady AC load, multiply 900Wh by 0.8 to allow for conversion losses and reserve, then divide by the device’s average wattage. That gives an estimated 720Wh of usable energy: about 14.4 hours at 50W, 7.2 hours at 100W, 3.6 hours at 200W, or 1.44 hours at 500W. These are planning figures, not guarantees. The station’s own efficiency, the device’s real draw, cycling, startup demand and operating conditions can all change the result.
The quick runtime answer for a 900Wh station
The basic estimate is:
Estimated runtime (hours) = rated capacity (Wh) × usable-energy factor ÷ average load (W)

Using Jackery Support’s general 80% planning factor, a 900Wh station contributes 720Wh to the calculation:
900Wh × 0.8 = 720Wh
Divide 720 by the device’s average wattage. A device drawing 100W would therefore be estimated at 7.2 hours:

720Wh ÷ 100W = 7.2 hours
Jackery describes this as an approximation and notes that actual runtime varies with usage and environmental conditions. It is most useful for stable loads, such as a laptop, fan or phone charger, rather than equipment whose power changes substantially.
| Average load | 900Wh estimate using 80% (720Wh) |
|---|---|
| 25W | 28.8 hours |
| 50W | 14.4 hours |
| 100W | 7.2 hours |
| 200W | 3.6 hours |
| 500W | 1.44 hours, or about 1 hour 26 minutes |
| 1,000W | 0.72 hours, or about 43 minutes |
Every value in this table is arithmetic derived from the 80% planning assumption; it is not an independent laboratory test. The station may deliver more or less time in actual use.
Why the 80% figure is only a planning assumption
A 900Wh label describes the battery’s nominal stored energy. Energy is lost when the station converts battery power to the output your equipment uses, and manufacturers may reserve part of the battery rather than allowing complete discharge. The 80% factor is a convenient general estimate, not a universal efficiency rating for every model.

Other manufacturers publish different methods. Anker SOLIX gives a quick AC estimate using 85%. BLUETTI’s guidance for its Pioneer Na uses a model-specific calculation that includes 95% depth of discharge, 90% inverter efficiency and approximately 1.5W of station self-consumption under its stated conditions. Those inputs demonstrate why a model’s own documentation is preferable when you know the exact unit.

Do not mix factors without labeling them. If you use 85%, the planning numerator for a 900Wh station is 765Wh rather than 720Wh. That changes every runtime result. If a manufacturer supplies a complete formula, use that formula instead of substituting a generic percentage.
What watt-hours and watts each tell you
Watt-hours estimate duration
Watt-hours (Wh) measure an amount of stored energy. Dividing usable watt-hours by average watts produces an estimate of operating time. The calculation works best when the load is reasonably steady over the period you care about.
Watts determine whether the station can run the device
Watts (W) measure power at a moment in time. A station’s continuous output rating and surge capability determine whether it can supply a particular appliance. A 900Wh capacity alone does not prove compatibility.

Capacity and output are separate checks
Runtime division answers “how long, if it can run?” The output specification answers “can it run at all?” Check both before connecting an appliance. A calculation that predicts several hours is irrelevant if the appliance exceeds the station’s continuous output or its startup surge limit.
How to estimate runtime for your own equipment
- Find the device’s actual average draw. Use the appliance label, manual or a power meter where possible. A maximum or peak figure is not necessarily the energy used over an hour. For a cycling device, determine its average over a representative period.
- Add simultaneous loads. If a monitor, router and laptop run together, add their average wattages before dividing. For example, three loads averaging 40W, 25W and 35W total 100W, so the 80% estimate is 7.2 hours for a 900Wh station.
- Choose and state the energy factor. Use the station maker’s published method when available. If you are making a generic estimate, state that you are using 80%, giving 720Wh from a 900Wh rating.
- Divide usable watt-hours by the combined average watts. Keep the units consistent: watt-hours divided by watts gives hours.
- Check continuous and surge output separately. Confirm that the station can handle the device while running and, where relevant, when it starts.
- Build in practical margin. Treat the result as a planning estimate, not a promise that the display will reach exactly zero at that time. Conditions, reserve settings and changing loads can shorten or extend it.
Worked examples for common planning questions
How long will a 100W device run?
At the general 80% assumption, 900Wh becomes 720Wh. Dividing by 100W gives approximately 7.2 hours. This is the direct answer to the common “900Wh at 100W” question, provided the device really averages close to 100W and the station can supply it.
What about a 200W load?
720Wh ÷ 200W equals 3.6 hours. Two 100W devices running at the same time produce the same 200W average and therefore the same estimate.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does a 500W appliance last only about an hour and a half?
A 500W load consumes energy five times faster than a 100W load. The calculation is 720Wh ÷ 500W = 1.44 hours, or roughly 86 minutes. A high-power appliance may also have a startup surge that must be checked against the station’s output rating.

What does a 1,000W load imply?
The arithmetic estimate is 0.72 hours, approximately 43 minutes. This example is valid only if the station’s continuous output supports 1,000W and any startup demand stays within its surge capability.
Loads that make the simple division less reliable
Variable and cycling equipment
Some equipment alternates between high and low draw. Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners are examples: a compressor may be off for part of the hour and then draw substantially more while starting and running. A single “running watts” number cannot describe that pattern accurately.
For a cycling load, use average energy consumption over the relevant period when that information is available. If you only know the running wattage, your result can be materially different from the station’s observed runtime. Jackery specifically cautions that its simple capacity-times-0.8 method is not suitable for variable-power equipment.

Motors and compressors can require more power to start than they use after reaching operating speed. The station must be able to provide that surge even if the eventual running wattage appears modest. Runtime arithmetic cannot establish startup compatibility; compare the appliance’s starting demand with the station’s continuous and surge limits.

Loads with changing user behavior
A computer, display or communications device may draw different amounts depending on brightness, workload, radios and connected accessories. Use an average measured over the way you actually intend to use it rather than a best-case idle figure or a worst-case maximum.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.AC estimates versus the station’s other outputs
The 80% example is presented as a quick AC estimate. A station may also provide DC or USB outputs, and the conversion path and control electronics can differ between outputs. Do not assume that an AC estimate is an exact prediction for every port. When the manufacturer supplies separate figures or a port-specific procedure, use those instructions.
Likewise, do not subtract a device’s advertised peak wattage from 900Wh as though watts were watt-hours. A 500W rating describes power; it becomes energy only after you account for how long the device draws it and whether it cycles.

- Conversion and reserve losses: The battery’s full rated capacity is not necessarily delivered to an AC load. Jackery’s general estimate uses 80%; Anker SOLIX cites 85%; BLUETTI’s Pioneer Na guidance uses its own depth-of-discharge, inverter-efficiency and self-consumption inputs.
- Self-consumption: The station itself uses some power while operating its electronics. BLUETTI’s Pioneer Na formula includes approximately 1.5W of self-consumption under the conditions stated by that manufacturer.
- Depth of discharge: A model may stop before every nominal watt-hour is used. This is one reason an exact station formula can differ from a generic percentage.
- Ambient and operating conditions: Manufacturer calculations may specify an ambient-temperature condition or other test assumptions. Jackery’s guidance says actual runtime may vary with usage and environmental conditions.
- Display rounding and shutdown behavior: A front-panel percentage or watt reading is a practical indicator, not a guarantee that the remaining energy maps linearly to runtime.
How to read a 900Wh product specification sheet
When comparing a particular station, record these items rather than relying on capacity alone:
- Rated capacity in watt-hours.
- Continuous AC output in watts.
- Surge or peak output and, if provided, its duration.
- The manufacturer’s usable-capacity or runtime formula.
- Any stated inverter-efficiency, depth-of-discharge or self-consumption assumptions.
- Whether the published runtime applies to AC, DC or USB output.
- Temperature or other conditions attached to the figures.
The BLUETTI Pioneer Na illustrates the distinction: its listed 900Wh capacity appears alongside a 1,500W output rating. That does not mean every 900Wh product can power a 1,500W appliance, nor does it say that a 1,500W load will run for a fixed duration.
A practical planning checklist
- Write down every device you intend to power and its measured or documented average wattage.
- Mark devices that cycle, contain a motor or compressor, or have a known startup surge.
- Add the average wattages of devices that will run simultaneously.
- Calculate a first estimate with 720Wh, clearly labeling the 80% assumption.
- Replace that factor with the station’s own published method if it provides one.
- Verify continuous and surge output before connecting the load.
- Plan for variation instead of scheduling a critical device to run until the exact calculated minute.
What a runtime estimate can—and cannot—promise
A calculation can turn a capacity label and a measured average load into a useful planning range. It cannot promise one exact runtime for every 900Wh station or every appliance. No single runtime applies to all models because manufacturers use different usable-energy assumptions, and no single appliance wattage captures every cycling or startup pattern.
For a known model, the most defensible answer combines its own formula with the appliance’s actual average draw and output requirements. For an unspecified 900Wh station, the transparent answer is the 80% estimate: 720Wh available for planning, divided by average watts, with the result qualified as approximate.
