Choose a portable power station by matching two separate ratings to your load: watt-hours (Wh) indicate how much energy the battery stores, while watts (W) indicate how quickly the inverter and ports can deliver it. Wh helps answer “how long?”; continuous and surge watt ratings answer “can it run this device?” A large battery cannot compensate for an inverter whose output is too low, and a high-wattage inverter cannot run for long if the battery is small.
What Wh and W actually measure
Watt-hours are stored energy
A capacity rating in Wh is an energy quantity. In ideal arithmetic, a 500 Wh battery could supply 100 W for five hours, or 50 W for ten hours. Real stations cannot turn every rated watt-hour into useful output at every port: inverter conversion, standby electronics, temperature, battery condition, discharge limits and the load itself reduce the delivered energy.

Capacity also does not tell you whether a station can start an appliance. A battery advertised with many watt-hours may be connected to an inverter that cannot supply the appliance’s instantaneous or continuous demand.
Watts are delivery rate
Output in W is the rate at which power is delivered. For devices operating together, add their running wattages and compare that total with the station’s continuous output rating. Check the rating for the specific output type you will use: AC sockets, DC outputs and USB ports can have separate limits, and a combined-output cap may apply when several ports operate at once.

Why both numbers belong on your shortlist
Wh determines the energy budget; W determines whether the station can supply the load at all. A station with enough Wh but insufficient continuous W will trip or refuse to run a demanding appliance. A station with ample W but inadequate Wh may power that appliance only briefly. Treat the two ratings as independent filters, not as interchangeable measures of “size.”
Continuous, maximum and surge ratings
Continuous output for sustained operation
Continuous output is the figure to use for a load that runs for minutes or hours. Sum the running wattage of everything that will be on simultaneously. Keep the total below the relevant AC, DC or port-level continuous limit, rather than relying on a short-term peak number.
Surge or peak output for startup
Motors and compressors can draw a startup spike before settling to their running wattage. Manufacturers may publish a surge, peak or maximum-output figure that covers only a short interval. The duration matters: a 10-second peak is not a sustained capability. If the appliance maker does not state startup demand, do not assume the station’s peak number will be sufficient; seek device-specific information or a measured startup value.

- Continuous: the sustained output the inverter is rated to provide under stated conditions.
- Surge/peak: a brief higher output intended for startup or transient demand.
- Maximum output: a manufacturer-defined limit that may differ from both continuous and peak terminology; read the model’s specification notes.
- Port or combined limit: the restriction for one socket, one port group or several outputs used together.
Never use a peak figure as the expected operating wattage. A station can show a high peak rating and still be unsuitable for a load whose running demand exceeds its continuous rating.
How to size a station step by step
- List every intended device. Read the wattage label or manual for each appliance, charger and tool. Record running watts, not only the voltage or amperage.
- Define simultaneous use. Add the running wattages of devices that must operate at the same time. This sum is your initial continuous-output requirement. Devices used at different times can be evaluated in separate scenarios.
- Flag motors and compressors. Refrigerators, pumps, fans, power tools and similar loads may start above their running wattage. Compare the appliance’s startup demand with the station’s surge rating and the published surge duration.
- Calculate energy for the required period. Multiply the combined load in watts by the desired hours. A 100 W load for five hours has an idealized requirement of 500 Wh.
- Add a planning margin. Anker SOLIX’s 2026 sizing guide gives the formula capacity needed (Wh) = total device wattage × hours of use × 1.2, describing the extra 20% as a buffer for inverter-efficiency losses. This is that manufacturer’s rule of thumb, not a universal measured efficiency rate or a guaranteed runtime.
- Identify the power path. Decide whether each device will use the AC inverter, a direct DC socket or USB. Conversion and standby losses can differ, so rated battery Wh is not guaranteed usable energy at every port.
- Check electrical compatibility. Confirm the station’s AC voltage and frequency match your country and appliance, then verify port ratings, connector types and any combined-output restrictions.
- Compare practical constraints. Weigh capacity and output against weight, dimensions, recharge methods, solar-input limits, battery chemistry, safety features and warranty support.
Runtime calculations that do not overpromise
The ideal estimate
The basic estimate is:
ideal runtime (hours) = capacity (Wh) ÷ load (W)
For example, 500 Wh ÷ 100 W = five ideal hours. That result assumes every rated watt-hour reaches the device and that the load remains exactly 100 W.

A planning estimate with a buffer
Applying Anker SOLIX’s published 20% buffer to the same example gives 100 W × 5 hours × 1.2 = approximately 600 Wh of planned capacity. Present this as a sizing allowance, not a promise that a 600 Wh station will deliver five hours through every output.
Why measured runtime varies
- AC use runs through an inverter, which consumes energy even before the appliance’s own demand.
- Idle or standby draw continues while some outlets and displays are enabled.
- Temperature and battery age affect available energy.
- Battery-management systems may reserve energy instead of allowing complete discharge.
- Many appliances cycle rather than drawing their label wattage continuously.
- USB and DC paths can avoid some conversion steps but still have their own electronics and limits.
Use the calculation to compare candidates and plan a margin; do not convert the printed Wh figure directly into a guaranteed AC runtime.
What published product specifications look like
Manufacturer figures illustrate how the ratings fit together. They are specifications, not independent category-wide performance tests.
| Example model | Capacity | Continuous output | Higher short-term rating | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DJI Power 1000 | 1024 Wh | 2200 W maximum continuous output | 2600 W maximum output; 4400 W peak output | DJI lists the 2200 W continuous figure at 25°C and states that output data varies by country and region. The Japanese version is listed with a 2000 W continuous limit. |
| Goal Zero Yeti 700 | not stated in the cited specification excerpt | 600 W continuous AC output | 1000 W surge output | The figures show the difference between sustained and surge output; they are not a general performance benchmark. |
The DJI example has more than four times as much continuous output as the Goal Zero example, but capacity, port limits, voltage and regional versions still determine whether either is appropriate for a particular job. Read the exact specification for the model and market you will buy.
AC, DC and USB: the output details people miss
AC inverter output
AC sockets are appropriate for mains-powered equipment but introduce inverter conversion and idle consumption. Check the station’s AC voltage and frequency for your region. A specification written for one market may not apply to another, even when the product name is the same.

Direct DC outputs
DC sockets can be useful for compatible lights, routers, vehicle accessories and other devices designed for that voltage. Verify connector polarity, voltage, amperage and the individual socket limit. Do not connect a device merely because its plug fits.

USB ports and shared budgets
USB ports have their own power profiles and may share a budget with other low-voltage outputs. If the station publishes a combined limit, treat it as the ceiling for simultaneous use. A headline AC rating does not automatically apply to USB-C or USB-A ports.
Recharge, solar input and portability
Recharge speed and method can matter as much as stored energy when the station is used repeatedly. Compare the supported wall, vehicle and solar inputs, recharge time claims and whether charging can occur while loads are connected. For solar, a panel is compatible only when its voltage range, connector and wattage fall within the exact station’s solar-input specification. A panel’s advertised wattage alone does not establish compatibility.
Higher Wh and W ratings generally increase mass and size, so include lifting, transport and storage in the decision. Also compare battery chemistry, safety features and warranty or support terms. These factors affect how practical the capacity is in an outage, at a campsite or on a work site.
Regional and environmental qualifications
Output ratings can change by country because AC voltage, frequency and regulatory limits differ. DJI explicitly notes regional variation for the Power 1000 and specifies its 2200 W continuous figure at 25°C. Treat every number as conditional on the stated temperature, edition and market. Common sizing mistakes and fixes
Choosing by Wh alone
Symptom: the battery appears large, but a high-demand appliance will not start. Fix: check continuous output first, then startup demand and surge duration.
Adding every label wattage when devices are not simultaneous
Symptom: an unnecessarily large, heavy station is selected. Fix: create separate scenarios for simultaneous loads and size each scenario’s output and energy requirement.
Treating surge as continuous
Symptom: the station trips during sustained use even though the appliance’s peak number looks acceptable. Fix: compare running watts with continuous output; reserve surge capacity for the startup event.
Ignoring startup demand
Symptom: a compressor or motor clicks, stalls or shuts the station down. Fix: obtain a startup measurement or appliance specification and compare it with the station’s rated peak and duration.
Assuming rated Wh equals AC runtime
Symptom: actual runtime is shorter than Wh ÷ W. Fix: account for inverter and standby losses, temperature, battery condition and discharge limits; use a margin such as the one published by Anker SOLIX rather than promising an exact result.

Mixing regional specifications
Symptom: a model bought in one country has a different output limit from a review or listing elsewhere. Fix: use the specification sheet for the exact regional version and voltage.
A comparison checklist
Record these fields for every candidate before deciding:
- Capacity in Wh and any stated usable-energy or discharge condition.
- Continuous AC, DC and USB output ratings.
- Surge or peak wattage, including its duration.
- Voltage and frequency for the intended region.
- Per-port and combined-output ceilings.
- Wall, vehicle and solar charging inputs, with voltage and wattage ranges.
- Weight, dimensions and carrying design.
- Battery chemistry, safety functions and operating-temperature limits.
- Warranty and manufacturer support for your market.
Then test the candidate against your highest simultaneous running load, its startup event and your required hours. Reject any model that fails one of those three checks, even if its headline Wh or W number looks attractive.

Start with the devices, not the station label. Continuous watts determine whether the station can run the simultaneous load; surge capability determines whether motorized equipment can start; watt-hours determine how long the stored energy can last after allowing for real-world losses. Verify ports, voltage, region, temperature conditions and recharge compatibility on the exact model. Manufacturer specifications such as DJI’s Power 1000 figures and Goal Zero’s Yeti 700 figures demonstrate how these ratings are presented, while Anker SOLIX’s 20% addition is a planning convention rather than a universal efficiency guarantee.
