Pope Leo XIV refused permission for a proposed AI version of himself that would answer users’ questions in online “personal audiences.” The proposal was not an announced Vatican product: the requester, website and technical design have not been identified in the reporting.

What did Pope Leo reject?

In an interview, Leo said someone had asked for authorization to create an artificial version of him for a website where anyone could sign on and have a personal audience with “the pope.” The proposed AI would answer users’ questions. Leo said he would not authorize it.

“If there’s anybody who should not be represented by an avatar, I would say the pope is high on the list,” he said. Catholic News Service reported his remarks on September 23, 2025.

Why did he object to a virtual pope?

Leo’s objection was about more than whether an avatar looked or sounded convincing. He connected AI to the risks of blurred truth, diminished human relationships, human dignity and work.

Authenticity and truth

A digital figure presented as the pope could be mistaken for an authentic papal encounter, even though it would be an AI system generating responses. Leo warned that “the digital world will go on its own way, and we will become pawns, or left by the wayside.” The reports do not describe how the proposed system would identify itself, verify its answers or prevent users from confusing generated responses with the pope’s own words.

Human encounter and faith

Leo emphasized relationships and being present with other people as central to human life. “Our human life makes sense not because of artificial intelligence, but because of human beings and encounter, being with one another, creating relationships, and discovering in those human relationships also the presence of God,” he said. In related comments, he added: “It’s going to be very difficult to discover the presence of God in AI.”

Dignity and employment

The coverage also places his remarks within broader concerns about human dignity and the effects of AI on employment. The reporting does not quantify any job impact or provide a study of this particular proposal; it records the pope’s concerns rather than measured outcomes.

Was the Vatican planning to launch an AI pope?

No Vatican launch was announced in the cited reports. The account describes an individual seeking Leo’s authorization and his refusal. It does not name the requester, website or vendor, nor explain the system’s technical design. There is no basis in those reports to treat the proposal as an official Vatican service or to infer how it would handle personal data or pastoral guidance.

When and where did Pope Leo make the remarks?

Elise Ann Allen interviewed Leo on July 30, 2025. The conversation became the final chapter of her biography, Leo XIV: Citizen of the World, Missionary of the XXI Century, published in Spanish by Penguin Peru on September 18, 2025. Catholic News Service’s report followed on September 23. CNS reported on the interview’s place in the biography.

The book is the source of the interview, rather than evidence that the proposed AI audience was built or launched. The cited coverage identifies the Spanish-language publication; it does not establish other editions or current availability.

What to consider when comparing an AI religious avatar with clergy

An AI system could make answers available at scale, but availability alone does not make it equivalent to a human pastoral relationship. For this proposal, the reporting supports concerns about authenticity, truth, human connection, dignity and employment, but offers no technical specification or user study. A careful comparison would ask:

  • Authority and authenticity: Is it unmistakably labeled as AI, and can users tell which statements are official teaching versus generated responses?
  • Accuracy: How would incorrect, fabricated or outdated answers be detected and corrected?
  • Privacy: What happens to questions users submit, and who can access them? The reports do not state how the proposed site would handle data.
  • Accountability: Who would be responsible for advice, particularly on sensitive pastoral matters?
  • Access and scale: Could online availability help people reach information, and what human support would remain available?
  • Human relationships and work: Would the tool supplement personal interaction or displace it, and whose work might be affected?
