If the game ignores your pad, first determine whether Steam sees the device. Then test a wired connection, enable Steam Input for Poly Fighter, verify the Steam Overlay, and calibrate the controller before changing files or replacing hardware.
For PS4 (DualShock 4) and PS5 (DualSense) controllers, start with USB: SteamDB marks those support categories as USB Only. The sequence below separates a Windows or Steam detection problem from a game configuration problem, so you do not waste time on fixes that cannot address the actual failure.

Start with the fastest diagnosis
Close Poly Fighter completely, leave the controller connected, and open Steam’s controller settings. The controller should appear in the detected-controller list. This single check divides the problem into two branches:

Test with one physical controller connected. Disconnect extra pads and close the game before changing a setting, then relaunch it so the game receives a fresh controller session.

1. Confirm that Steam and Windows detect the pad
Use Steam’s detected-controller list
Open Steam’s controller settings and look for the device under detected controllers. A listed model confirms that the operating system and Steam can communicate with it; it does not yet prove that Poly Fighter is using the correct input mode.
Reconnect methodically
- Quit Poly Fighter.
- Unplug the controller and reconnect it directly to the computer rather than through a hub.
- Try another USB port and, if possible, a known-good data cable. A charge-only cable can power a controller without carrying input data.
- Wait for Steam to refresh the detected-controller list, then open Poly Fighter again.
If the pad still never appears in Steam, stay on this branch. Reinstalling or editing Poly Fighter files cannot make an unenumerated Windows device appear. Check the cable, port, and the controller on another computer if available; those tests identify a hardware or Windows issue without changing game settings.
2. Prefer a direct wired connection for initial testing
Wireless introduces another layer of pairing, radio, and profile state. Use a direct USB connection while troubleshooting so there is only one variable. This is especially important for PlayStation pads: SteamDB’s current configuration metadata marks the DualShock and DualSense support categories as USB Only.
PS4 and PS5 controllers
Connect the DualShock 4 or DualSense with USB before launching Steam or Poly Fighter. Confirm that the same controller appears in Steam’s detected list. Do not judge Bluetooth behavior until the wired test works; a successful wired test shows that the game and Steam configuration can accept the controller family.
Xbox-compatible controllers
The official Steam listing names Xbox Controllers as supported. A wired Xbox-compatible pad is a useful baseline because it commonly presents an XInput-style interface that many PC games recognize directly. The listing does not promise that every wireless adapter or third-party model will behave identically, so establish a wired baseline before diagnosing wireless connection issues.

3. Set Steam Input for Poly Fighter to Enabled
Steam’s troubleshooting guidance recommends enabling Steam Input when a game does not recognize a controller. Apply the setting to Poly Fighter rather than changing a global profile first.
- Open the Steam Library.
- Right-click Poly Fighter and choose Properties.
- Open the Controller page.
- Set the game’s Steam Input option to Enabled.
- Close the Properties window, fully quit Poly Fighter, and launch it again.
Restarting matters because a game can read the controller only during startup. If the pad was connected or the Steam Input mode changed while Poly Fighter was running, the existing session may continue using the old device state.

Steam Input can translate a controller’s signals into a layout the game understands. This is useful for a generic DirectInput pad or a PlayStation controller when native handling is not being selected. It also gives Steam a consistent virtual gamepad path, but that translation can expose duplicate devices if another remapper is active; use the conflict check in step 6 if enabling Steam Input does not help.
4. Make sure the Steam Overlay is available
Steam Support describes the Steam Overlay as vital to Steam Controller functionality. Enable the overlay globally in Steam’s in-game settings and for Poly Fighter in the game’s Steam properties, then restart the game.
- In Steam settings, turn on the option that enables the Steam Overlay while in-game.
- Open Poly Fighter’s Properties and verify its per-game overlay option is enabled.
- Quit Poly Fighter completely and relaunch it with the controller already connected.
- Use the Steam Overlay shortcut in-game to confirm that the overlay opens.
If the overlay does not appear, treat that as a Steam session problem rather than a Poly Fighter button-mapping problem. Resolve the overlay state first, because Steam Input functionality may not initialize correctly without it.

5. Calibrate and verify every control in Steam
A controller can appear in Steam while reporting a centered stick incorrectly or failing to deliver one or more buttons. Steam Support’s calibration path is:
- Enter Big Picture Mode.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Controller, then Controller settings.
- Select the detected controller.
- Run the calibration process and follow the on-screen movement and button prompts.
Calibration is appropriate when sticks drift, a trigger is permanently pressed, or Poly Fighter sees some controls but not others. After calibration, return to the detected-controller view and confirm that the same device remains selected. Relaunch Poly Fighter after calibration so it reads the corrected values.
Interpret the result
- All controls respond in Steam but not in Poly Fighter: continue with the per-game Steam Input and Overlay checks.
- One control fails in Steam: the problem is below the game layer. Recheck the cable and port, try another controller, or address the device in Windows.
- Calibration repeatedly fails: record the controller model and connection type for support; repeated failure is not evidence of a Poly Fighter-specific bug.
6. Remove temporary input conflicts
During diagnosis, run one physical controller through one input path. Close remappers, virtual-controller tools, macro utilities, and other gamepad software temporarily. The available support material does not identify a Poly Fighter-specific conflict list, so isolation is the reliable approach: remove variables, test, and then add tools back one at a time.
- Exit Poly Fighter and Steam.
- Close any controller-mapping or virtual-device applications that start with Windows or remain in the notification area.
- Reconnect one controller by USB.
- Restart Steam, confirm detection, and launch Poly Fighter with Steam Input enabled.
If the controller works after this clean test, re-enable utilities individually. The first tool that causes detection to disappear is the likely conflict. Keep only the software path you need; two translators can present duplicate or contradictory devices to a game.
7. Choose a controller family that matches the supported paths
Poly Fighter’s official listing names Xbox Controllers and PlayStation Controllers and says the developers recommend a controller. If your current pad remains unreliable after the checks above, compare the connection and protocol rather than buying solely by appearance.

Also consider the on-screen layout you expect. An Xbox or PlayStation button arrangement can match your muscle memory, while a generic pad may use different labels even when its inputs are translated correctly.
8. Inspect Poly Fighter’s local configuration only as a last resort
On Windows, PCGamingWiki documents Poly Fighter’s per-user data location as %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowHeartLoop GamesPoly Fighter. This is a place to inspect after Steam detection, Steam Input, Overlay, calibration, and conflict checks have all been completed.
Back up before touching anything
- Close Poly Fighter and Steam.
- Paste the path into File Explorer’s address bar.
- Copy the entire
Poly Fighterfolder to a separate backup location. - Inspect timestamps and file names for clues, but do not delete or edit a file merely because its name looks related to input.
The documented reference does not verify a specific input file that is safe to delete or edit, nor does it provide a confirmed reset procedure. Do not claim that removing the folder will fix detection. If you test a configuration change, make one change at a time, retain the backup, and be prepared to restore the original folder.

After each change, use the same short procedure so you can tell which action mattered:
- Quit Poly Fighter.
- Leave one controller connected by USB.
- Confirm the controller appears in Steam’s detected-controller list.
- Check Poly Fighter’s Properties > Controller page and confirm Steam Input is Enabled.
- Launch the game and test movement, face buttons, triggers, and the menu button.
- Record whether the failure is total, limited to one control, or limited to wireless mode.
Changing several settings at once makes the result impossible to interpret. A brief record of the controller model, cable or wireless mode, Steam Input state, and observed controls will also make support assistance faster.

10. When and how to contact HeartLoop Games
Escalate when Steam detects the controller, the wired test is complete, Steam Input is enabled, the Overlay is available, calibration succeeds, and conflicts are removed, yet Poly Fighter still ignores the pad. Contact HeartLoop Games through its official support or community channels and include reproducible details:
- Controller make and exact model (for example, Xbox-compatible, DualShock 4, or DualSense).
- USB or wireless connection, including whether USB works.
- Whether Steam lists the device under detected controllers.
- Poly Fighter’s Steam Input setting.
- Whether the Steam Overlay opens in the game.
- Calibration result and any drifting or missing controls.
- Windows version and the point at which input stops working.
- Any remapper or virtual-controller software that was closed or left running.
Describe one successful and one failing test if you have both. For example, “Steam detects the DualSense over USB and calibration passes, but Poly Fighter has no input after launch with Steam Input Enabled” is more actionable than “controller does not work.”

What the support evidence does—and does not—establish
The Steam listing establishes that Poly Fighter supports Xbox and PlayStation controllers and recommends a controller for play. Steam’s own guidance establishes the practical checks: detect the device, enable Steam Input when recognition fails, keep the Overlay available, and calibrate through Big Picture Mode. SteamDB adds an important qualification for DualShock and DualSense support by marking those categories USB Only.

There is no verified developer-authored list of Poly Fighter controller bugs, no confirmed game-specific reset file, and no published controller failure rate to use as a benchmark. Consequently, configuration editing belongs at the end of the process, and a successful Steam detection test is more informative than any unsupported claim about how often this problem occurs.
