What Pokémon Winds & Waves confirms at announcement
The Pokémon Company International’s official announcement page describes Winds and Waves as two new Pokémon RPG entries with a shared setting and simultaneous worldwide launch planned for 2027. Both games are exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2 console. The official material is announcement-stage information, so features not listed there should not be treated as confirmed.

Release timing, platform and purchase information
Worldwide launch in 2027
Both titles are scheduled for a simultaneous worldwide release in 2027. No exact day or month has been announced. “2027” is therefore a release window, not a reservation date, and any retailer date shown before an official announcement should be considered unverified.
Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive
The games are announced exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2. The current official information does not promise versions for the original Nintendo Switch, other consoles, PC or mobile devices. A Nintendo Switch 2 console is consequently the stated hardware requirement, although the announcement does not list storage, network or accessory requirements.
Price, pre-orders and editions
No launch price, pre-order opening, physical-game listing or digital-store details are provided in the cited official material. There is also no confirmed bundle or special edition. Wait for Nintendo or Pokémon channels to publish those details rather than relying on placeholder listings.

An open world shaped by wind and water
The setting is described as an open world made up of beautiful windswept islands and a vast ocean with glittering waves that ebb and flow. That wording establishes the broad geography and the importance of water and wind in the presentation, but it does not specify how many islands exist, how large the map is, or whether every island can be visited from the start.
Unique ecosystems
According to the official page, Pokémon living in harmony with the region’s lush environment have developed their own unique ecosystems. This suggests that habitats and local Pokémon communities are a central part of the setting. It does not yet explain whether ecosystems change over time, affect encounters, alter battles or create a formal ecology system.
Rank #2
- Action meets RPG in this new take on the Pokémon series
- Study Pokémon behaviors, sneak up on them, and toss a well-aimed Poké Ball to catch them
- Unleash moves in the speedy agile style or the powerful strong style in battles
- Travel to the Hisui region—the Sinnoh of old—and build the region’s first Pokédex
- Learn about the Mythical Pokémon Arceus, the key to this mysterious tale
No official region name or real-world inspiration yet
The announcement does not give the region a proper name. It also does not identify a real-world country or culture as its inspiration. Descriptions of the landscape should therefore stay with what is shown or stated—windswept islands, ocean and lush environments—rather than assigning a geographic model that has not been confirmed.
Gameplay: what the announcement actually promises
Working with Pokémon to overcome obstacles
The player becomes the main character and is told they can team up with Pokémon to face the journey and forces of nature that block their path. This is the clearest gameplay promise so far: progression involves cooperation with Pokémon while navigating environmental challenges.

Traversal systems are not defined
The official description does not identify particular ride Pokémon, swimming or flying controls, climbing, gliding, weather manipulation, equipment or other traversal abilities. It also does not say whether environmental obstacles are puzzles, hazards, story gates or optional challenges. Until a later announcement gives examples, those systems remain open questions.
Battle and multiplayer details are absent
No battle format, new combat rules, real-time features, online modes, local multiplayer, trading structure or cooperative campaign has been announced in the cited material. The games are described as RPGs, but that label alone does not establish how battles or progression will work.
The three confirmed first partners
Browt, Pombon and Gecqua are the announced starter choices. Their official categories, measurements, abilities and descriptions are listed below. The figures are published by The Pokémon Company International on the 2026 game page.
Rank #3
- Revisit the Sinnoh region from the original Pokémon Pearl Version game and set off to try and become the Champion of the Pokémon League
- The Pokémon Shining Pearl game brings new life to this remade classic with added features
- Explore the Grand Underground to dig up items and Pokémon Fossils, build a Secret Base, and more.
- Test your style and rhythm in a Super Contest Show
- A reimagined adventure, now for the Nintendo Switch system
| Pokémon | Category | Type | Height | Weight | Ability | Official description |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Browt | Bean Chick Pokémon | Grass | 0.3 m | 3.5 kg | Overgrow | Runs energetically and photosynthesizes through leaves on its brow; lively and sometimes clumsy. |
| Pombon | Puppy Pokémon | Fire | 0.4 m | 6.7 kg | Blaze | A heat-generating organ in its lungs makes the area below its throat glow faintly; it is guileless and friendly. |
| Gecqua | Water Gecko Pokémon | Water | 0.3 m | 4.3 kg | Torrent | Launches springy balls of water from its tail; intelligent and shrewd, with an affected air. |
Browt: Grass-type Bean Chick
Browt’s concept combines plant biology with energetic birdlike movement. Leaves on its brow enable photosynthesis, while the official description emphasizes a lively personality that can become clumsy. Overgrow is its listed ability. The announcement does not reveal moves, evolution stages, stats beyond the published measurements, or how Browt interacts with island ecosystems.
Pombon: Fire-type Puppy
Pombon is a friendly puppy whose lungs contain a heat-generating organ. The resulting glow beneath its throat is a visual sign of its Fire typing, while Blaze is its listed ability. The page characterizes Pombon as guileless and approachable but does not state whether its organ affects exploration, attacks, weather or environmental obstacles.
Gecqua: Water-type Water Gecko
Gecqua uses its tail to launch springy balls of water and is described as intelligent, shrewd and slightly affected in manner. Torrent is its listed ability. No information has been released about water travel, special techniques, evolution or whether Gecqua’s water attacks have a role outside battles.
What is not known about the starters
The announcement does not reveal any starter’s evolution line, later forms, signature moves, base stats, hidden abilities, availability after the opening choice or relationship to the region’s ecosystems. Claims about those subjects remain speculation unless a later official source confirms them.
Winds and Waves: the confirmed version difference
There are two editions, titled Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves. The player is the main character in either version, but the player character’s outfit differs between the two games.
Rank #4
- Don the role of a Pokémon Trainer as you travel through Kanto
- Discover a new species of Pokémon with the Pokémon Lets Go series
- Catch Pokémon in the wild using a gentle throwing motion with either a Joy-Con controller or a Poké Ball Plus accessory, which will light up, vibrate, and make sounds to bring your adventure to life
- See the world in style by customizing Pikachu and your Trainer with a selection of outfits
- Connect to Pokémon GO* to transfer caught Kanto-region Pokémon, including Alolan and Shiny forms, as well as the newly discovered Pokémon, Meltan, from that game to this one
| Edition | Platform | Setting | Confirmed difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pokémon Winds | Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive | Open world of islands and ocean | Player outfit differs from the Waves version |
| Pokémon Waves | Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive | Open world of islands and ocean | Player outfit differs from the Winds version |
The official page does not confirm version-exclusive Pokémon, separate story routes, different maps, exclusive characters, altered mechanics or distinct starter availability. Choosing an edition based on presumed exclusives would therefore be premature.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu
The announcement introduces two special Pikachu variants: Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu. Their names connect them to the two editions, but the official material does not explain whether they are partners, mascots, wild encounters, story characters or cosmetic forms. Their role in the adventure is explicitly being left for future announcements.
Important unanswered questions
A useful way to read the announcement is to separate confirmed foundations from details that have not been published. The following subjects remain open:
- The region’s official name and any real-world inspiration.
- The central plot, characters, antagonists and progression structure.
- Battle format, battle changes and whether familiar systems return unchanged.
- Specific traversal abilities and the exact function of natural obstacles.
- Multiplayer, online connectivity, trading and cooperative play.
- Evolution lines, later forms and signature moves for Browt, Pombon and Gecqua.
- The role and availability of Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu.
- The exact launch date, price, physical availability and pre-order schedule.
These are not omissions that can be filled responsibly with guesses. The official page supplies the setting’s broad concept and the starters’ identities, while the remaining systems require additional announcements.

- Check the official game page. New details about the region, characters or mechanics should be compared with the information on the Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves announcement page.
- Verify dates and platform claims. The currently established schedule is worldwide release in 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2. Treat a specific day, price or additional platform as unconfirmed until an official Pokémon or Nintendo notice states it.
- Separate footage from explanation. A trailer can show an island, Pokémon or environmental effect without establishing how that feature works in the finished game. Look for accompanying text that defines mechanics.
- Check whether a claim applies to both editions. At present, the only stated edition difference is the player outfit. Do not infer exclusive content from the names Winds and Waves alone.
What this means for prospective players
The announcement gives prospective players a clear high-level identity: an open-world Pokémon adventure built around island habitats, a large ocean and cooperation with Pokémon against natural obstacles. The three starters provide the traditional Grass, Fire and Water choice, each with a named ability and a distinct ecological concept.
It does not yet provide enough information to choose between editions for gameplay reasons, estimate the final cost, plan a multiplayer group or decide which starter will be strongest. Those decisions depend on details that have not been announced, including battle rules, version content, evolution and the exact launch package.
Bottom line
Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves are confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027, with a shared open world of windswept islands and ocean ecosystems. Browt, Pombon and Gecqua are the announced first partners, and environmental cooperation is the central gameplay idea disclosed so far. Everything beyond that foundation—including the region’s name, story, battle systems, traversal mechanics, version exclusives, price and launch day—still awaits official confirmation.
