The short answer: buy now or wait?
Your decision is mainly about timing, hardware and how much uncertainty you can accept. Scarlet and Violet are complete, currently available Switch RPGs with publicly described systems and additional content. Winds and Waves may offer a different exploration concept, but the available information is still an announcement rather than a complete product specification.
| If this describes you | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want to start playing immediately on a Nintendo Switch | Scarlet or Violet | Both are released games with a playable open world, three story routes, Terastallization and an available expansion. |
| You are planning to buy a Nintendo Switch 2 and prefer islands and ocean exploration | Wait for Winds or Waves | The new pair is announced as Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive and is planned for 2027. |
| You need confirmed price, preorder, story or technical details before committing | Scarlet or Violet now, or wait for more announcements | Those Winds/Waves details are not established yet. |
| You want a known version-specific legendary Pokémon | Scarlet for Koraidon or Violet for Miraidon | The two existing editions identify these version-specific legendary Pokémon. |
There is no evidence that Winds and Waves replace Scarlet and Violet as an immediate purchase. They are a future pair with a different announced setting and hardware requirement, while Scarlet and Violet remain the only choice of these two options that can be played now.

What is confirmed about Pokémon Winds and Waves
Release window and hardware
The Pokémon Company International has announced Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves for a simultaneous worldwide release in 2027. The announcement identifies the games as exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. That means a launch copy is not currently described as an original Nintendo Switch release, and the announcement does not promise cross-generation compatibility.
Because no launch month, day, price or preorder date has been published in the available material, treat 2027 as the announced release year rather than a guaranteed date on which a retailer can fulfill an order. If you do not own a Switch 2, the hardware cost and availability of that console are part of the decision even though no Winds/Waves bundle or system price has been specified.
Announced world and exploration premise
The new games are described as an open world of windswept islands and a vast ocean, with Pokémon-specific ecosystems. The announcement uses the phrase “an open world to explore, with beautiful windswept islands and a vast ocean with glittering waves that ebb and flow.” This establishes the setting’s broad direction, not the size of the map, the number of islands, travel methods, quest structure or how much of the ocean is playable.
It is therefore reasonable to choose Winds or Waves because the setting sounds more appealing to you, but not to assume that the announcement proves better traversal, denser ecosystems or stronger technical performance. The publisher explicitly cautions: “Screenshots and footage are from a product in development and not final. Actual gameplay experience may vary.”
Starter Pokémon and the information currently available
Winds and Waves introduce three named starters. The announcement supplies their types, measurements, weights and abilities:
| Starter | Type | Height | Weight | Ability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Browt | Grass | 0.3 m | 3.5 kg | Overgrow |
| Pombon | Fire | 0.4 m | 6.7 kg | Blaze |
| Gecqua | Water | 0.3 m | 4.3 kg | Torrent |
Those measurements and abilities come from the announcement and should not be read as evidence of final stats, evolutions or battle roles. No final evolution lines, regional Pokédex size or broader roster has been established in the available information.
What differs between Winds and Waves?
The announcement confirms that the player-character outfit differs between the two versions. It does not provide a comprehensive list of version-exclusive Pokémon, characters, areas, items or mechanics. You should not choose Winds or Waves on the assumption that a particular Pokémon or feature is exclusive until an official version guide identifies it.

- The World of Pokémon Has Evolved - Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet offer an open-world experience that only the Pokémon series can deliver—one welcoming even to newcomers to the series.
- You can experience a new style of adventure, with a world that you’re free to explore at your leisure and not in an order dictated by the story. You will, of course, journey to hone your skills as a Pokémon Trainer, but many more discoveries and stories await you. Meet a variety of people and Pokémon, and adventure in the world of Pokémon the way you want to.
- A Deeper Experience with Multiplayer* Gameplay - Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet allow multiplayer gameplay with up to four players. Along with series staples, such as trading and battling Pokémon, you will be able to explore the various locations of the region in these games with other players. You can discover new Pokémon and explore unfamiliar areas with your friends and family, opening the door to an adventure more precious and fun than ever!
- Meet the characters - As one of the main characters, you’ll set off on your adventure. Your outfit will vary depending on whether you play Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet. Who knows what kind of story awaits you? For the first time in the series, one of two different professors will appear in your game depending on the version you choose to play.
The names suggest two editions of one release, but the available announcement does not establish whether the games will differ in story events, legendary Pokémon, map sections or other systems. Outfit variation is the only confirmed edition distinction in the current material.
What Pokémon Scarlet and Violet offer now
Paldea’s open world
Scarlet and Violet take place in the Paldea region. Their official description presents towns and wilderness without traditional borders, allowing the setting to function as one connected open world rather than a sequence of separately loaded routes. If you prefer a region where settlements blend directly into wild areas, Paldea is the documented choice among these games.
The open-world label does not mean the games and Winds/Waves have been tested side by side. Winds and Waves are still in development, so screenshots cannot establish comparative loading, frame rate, draw distance or environmental density.
Three interwoven story paths
Scarlet and Violet organize the main adventure around three named routes:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Victory Road: the route associated with the traditional Pokémon League progression.
- Path of Legends: one of the parallel story lines available in Paldea.
- Starfall Street: the third named route in the interwoven structure.
The value of this structure is practical: you are not limited to completing one linear campaign before seeing the other two routes. The official description identifies the paths and their interwoven nature, while the Winds/Waves announcement does not yet describe an equivalent story format. If story structure is a deciding factor, Scarlet and Violet are the only option with a documented multi-route design.
Terastallization and battle identity
Paldea’s signature feature is Terastallization. It activates a Pokémon’s Tera Type and can change that Pokémon’s type during battle. That creates a documented tactical layer: the type you see in a Pokémon’s normal form is not necessarily the type it uses after Terastallizing.
The Winds/Waves announcement does not describe a comparable battle gimmick. It may receive one later, but there is no factual basis yet for saying the new games continue, replace or improve Terastallization. Choose Scarlet or Violet if you want a known, officially described battle system rather than waiting to learn what the new pair does.

Expansion content and collection features
Scarlet and Violet have an available two-part expansion called The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero. The official page describes it as adding areas, characters and Pokémon. This is a significant difference in known long-term content: the existing games have a named expansion with a stated scope, whereas no Winds/Waves downloadable content plan has been announced.
The Scarlet and Violet page also describes linking the games with Pokémon HOME, subject to game-specific Pokémon availability. That qualification matters: HOME linking does not mean every Pokémon can move freely into or out of every title. For Winds and Waves, the reviewed announcement gives no HOME compatibility details, so do not buy the new games expecting transfers to work at launch.
Version-specific legendary Pokémon
Scarlet and Violet identify a version-specific legendary Pokémon: Koraidon is associated with Scarlet, while Miraidon is associated with Violet. These are confirmed edition differences you can use when choosing between the existing games.
Winds and Waves have no announced equivalent in the available material. Avoid treating artwork, rumors or the version names as confirmation of exclusive legendaries.

Choose Scarlet or Violet now when certainty matters
You want a game this year
Scarlet and Violet are the direct answer for immediate play. You can select an existing edition, begin in Paldea and access the documented story routes and Terastallization without waiting for a 2027 release. The games are Nintendo Switch titles, so no Switch 2 purchase is required merely to start them.

You value established content over announced potential
The existing games have a known region, named routes, a defined battle feature, an available two-part expansion and a stated HOME-linking feature. Winds and Waves may eventually offer more information, but its current announcement cannot answer basic buying questions such as price, preorder date or DLC plans.
You are deciding between Scarlet and Violet
Use the confirmed legendary preference as your clearest edition choice: Scarlet features Koraidon, while Violet features Miraidon. The available material does not provide a complete, current list of every other version-exclusive Pokémon or mechanic, so do not let an unofficial list override the edition information supplied by the publisher. If you plan to trade or play with friends, confirm the specific exclusives from a current official guide before purchasing; they are not established in the announcement used for this comparison.

- Only one code for a Hisuian Zoroark can be used in either the Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet game. Upon purchase of The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC, an email with your code will be sent to the email address registered to your Nintendo Account. From the in-game menu, go to the Poké Portal, then select Mystery Gift, select Get with Code/Password, and then enter your code.
- The Mystery Gift option can be found within the Poké Portal menu option in the X menu after you unlock the feature in the Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet game. (This occurs after about 1 to 1.5 hours of gameplay, though individual gameplay time may vary.) An internet connection and a Nintendo Account is required to redeem the item in game. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required. Each item can only be redeemed once.
Wait for Winds or Waves when the new setting is the priority
You specifically want islands and ocean travel
The announced environment is the strongest reason to wait. Winds and Waves are presented around windswept islands, a vast ocean and Pokémon-specific ecosystems. That is a different creative premise from Paldea’s connected towns and terrestrial wilderness. If that premise is more important to you than playing immediately, waiting preserves the chance to experience it as intended on Switch 2.
You already plan to own a Switch 2
Because the announcement identifies Switch 2 as the exclusive platform, existing Switch ownership alone does not make you ready for Winds or Waves. Wait only if you are comfortable acquiring or using the newer console by the time the games launch. The announcement does not establish whether any special hardware bundle will be offered.
You can tolerate unanswered questions
Waiting means accepting that important details may change or remain unknown for some time. The footage is not final, and there is no confirmed pricing, preorder schedule, complete version content, story outline, battle system, expansion plan, HOME support or performance target. A wait is sensible if those unknowns are acceptable and you would rather see the finished game information before choosing.
What is still unknown about Winds and Waves
The following gaps are material to a purchase decision. They are not minor omissions that can be filled safely with assumptions:
| Unknown | Why it matters | Safe conclusion today |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Determines the total cost alongside Switch 2 hardware | Do not treat a retailer rumor or an unrelated Pokémon price as official. |
| Preorder date and launch day | Determines when you can reserve or play the games | Only the 2027 worldwide release year is announced. |
| Full version exclusives | May determine whether Winds or Waves better suits your collection or friends | Only the differing player outfits are confirmed. |
| Detailed story structure | Shows whether the campaign is linear, multi-route or another format | No comparable structure to Scarlet/Violet’s three paths is announced. |
| Battle gimmick | Defines competitive and single-player strategy | No Winds/Waves equivalent to Terastallization is described. |
| Downloadable content | Indicates whether post-launch areas, characters or Pokémon are planned | No DLC plan is announced. |
| Pokémon HOME compatibility | Affects transfers and long-term collection planning | Compatibility is not confirmed. |
| Final performance | Determines how the open world actually runs on Switch 2 | Announcement footage is not final; do not infer frame rate or image quality. |
Can you play Scarlet or Violet before Winds and Waves?
Yes. Nothing in the announced information says that playing Scarlet or Violet would prevent you from enjoying Winds or Waves later. The existing games provide their own Paldea setting, routes, battle feature and expansion. However, there is also no announcement that progress, Pokémon or downloadable content will transfer between these games. Treat them as separate purchases until official compatibility information says otherwise.
Playing now can also clarify what you actually want from a future Pokémon game. You can learn whether an open-world structure, optional story routes and a type-changing battle mechanic suit your preferences instead of deciding from a trailer alone. That experience will not predict Winds/Waves performance, because the new product remains in development, but it can make your personal priorities clearer.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Check your timing. If you want to play immediately, choose Scarlet or Violet. If you are willing to wait until 2027, continue through the remaining questions.
- Check your console plan. Winds and Waves are announced as Switch 2-exclusive. Keep Scarlet/Violet in consideration if you only own an original Switch.
- Choose your world. Pick Paldea for connected towns and wilderness; wait for Winds/Waves if windswept islands, ocean and ecosystem-focused exploration are the central attraction.
- Choose your known systems. Scarlet/Violet have three named story paths and Terastallization. Winds/Waves systems are not yet described.
- Choose your content horizon. Scarlet/Violet have The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero and described HOME linking. Winds/Waves have no announced DLC or HOME plan.
- Set an uncertainty limit. Do not preorder or budget for Winds/Waves until official pricing, preorder timing and final technical information are available.
- If buying an existing edition, select the legendary you prefer. Koraidon is in Scarlet; Miraidon is in Violet.
Bottom line for different readers
- New Pokémon player with a Nintendo Switch: Scarlet or Violet is the practical choice because it is available now and its major systems are documented.
- Returning player who wants a substantial current adventure: Scarlet/Violet offer Paldea, three routes, Terastallization and a two-part expansion.
- Player most excited by an ocean-centered world: Wait for Winds or Waves, but plan around Switch 2 and incomplete information.
- Collector focused on transfers: Scarlet/Violet have described HOME linking with restrictions; Winds/Waves compatibility remains unknown.
- Performance-sensitive buyer: Do not judge Winds/Waves from announcement footage. The publisher says the material is not final and actual gameplay may vary.
