The safest Pokémon Red or Blue purchase is an authentic cartridge that boots reliably, retains a save after a full power-off, matches your target region, and is priced against comparable sold copies. A cartridge can play normally yet have a failed save battery, and an attractive label does not prove authenticity. Treat authenticity, physical condition, function, save retention, completeness, region, and seller protections as separate checks before you buy.
What a good Red or Blue purchase looks like
Original Game Boy copies of Pokémon Red and Blue are now used collectibles as well as playable games. The same listing can therefore be judged in several different ways: a collector may prioritize an original label and matching regional release, while a player may accept cosmetic wear if the game boots and keeps a save. Decide which outcome you want before comparing prices.

- Authenticity: the shell, label, molded markings, screw and circuit board should be consistent with an original cartridge for its region and print revision.
- Function: it should boot repeatedly, display the game correctly and respond to controls.
- Save retention: a save must survive switching the Game Boy off and restarting. “New battery” in a description is not a substitute for this test.
- Condition: label fading, peeling, writing, shell cracks, chips, mismatched parts and contact wear affect value and appearance.
- Completeness: cartridge-only, cartridge with case, and boxed copies are different products and must not be priced as equivalents.
- Region and revision: language, product code and label details need to match the release you are collecting or using.
A listing that has not been tested should remain “untested” in your comparison. Do not infer authenticity or a working battery from clear photos alone.

| Game and evidence | Displayed price | Date shown | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pokémon Red completed sale | $35 | October 11, 2026 | One US-dollar transaction; condition and claims must be checked on the original listing. |

| Pokémon Red completed sale | $64.99 | October 10, 2026 | Another individual sale in the same displayed table. |
| Pokémon Red completed sale | $69 | October 10, 2026 | Do not treat the high end as fair value for every copy. |
| Pokémon Blue cartridge-only asking price at one European retailer | €74.95 | Retail stock listing | Described as poor condition; an asking price, not a completed sale. |
| Pokémon Blue cartridge-only asking price at the same retailer | €94.95 | Retail stock listing | Another listed copy; stock and condition can change. |
The retailer also displayed a boxed Pokémon Yellow listing at €319.95. Yellow has different gameplay features and is not a substitute for Red or Blue; its price should not be used to value either game.
When checking a marketplace, filter for sold or completed listings where possible. Compare copies with the same region, loose or boxed status, label condition, tested or untested save, and included accessories. A higher price can be rational when the seller supplies sharp photos, a documented save test and a return option; it is not rational merely because the listing uses words such as “rare” or “mint.”
How to check authenticity before paying
No single feature proves that a Game Boy cartridge is genuine. CATRP’s authenticity reference and the ConsoleMods Wiki both stress comparing several clues while allowing for regional and print-run variation. Reproduction shells and replacement labels can copy one convincing detail, so inspect the complete set.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
1. Match the label to the same region
Look for sharp printing, correctly spelled text, plausible colors and artwork, and alignment that matches reference photographs from the same release region. North American, European, Japanese and other versions use different label languages and product codes. A genuine cartridge from another region can look “wrong” if you compare it with the wrong reference.
Replacement labels are common. A clean label on a heavily worn shell is not automatically fake, and a faded or scratched label is not automatically original. Ask whether the label is believed to be original and treat an uncertain answer as a condition and value risk.
2. Inspect molded shell markings
Check the top molded Nintendo and Game Boy markings and the overall plastic molding. Compare lettering, spacing and placement with photographs of an authentic cartridge from the same region. Small differences can reflect a different factory run, so use the markings alongside the label, screw and board rather than rejecting a cart on one mismatch.
3. Check the screw, without opening the cartridge casually
Reference guides identify the Game Boy cartridge screw as a useful clue and note that a Phillips screw can be suspicious. It is not conclusive: a legitimate cartridge may have been opened for battery service, and a counterfeit can use a more convincing screw. A Game Bit driver is normally required for inspection. Opening the shell can damage the screw or create a dispute with a seller, so request internal photographs first and confirm the return policy.

4. Request a clear board photograph when uncertainty remains
Ask for an in-focus photograph of the circuit board, ideally with the shell opened by the seller. Authentic boards show Nintendo markings and the battery arrangement described in the CATRP guide, but board layouts and markings can vary across print runs. A blurry image, cropped board or refusal to provide one should lower your confidence rather than be treated as proof of fraud.
5. Check consistency across the cartridge
- Does the label language agree with the product code and the seller’s stated region?
- Do shell wear and screw condition suggest the cartridge has been opened?
- Does the board photograph belong to the same cartridge, rather than a stock image?
- Are the label, shell and board all plausible together, or is one component clearly from another release?
The official Pokémon Blue Game Pak booklet states: “All Nintendo products are licensed by sale for use only with other authorized products bearing the Official Nintendo Seal of Quality.” That historical wording identifies the original product standard; it is not a modern guarantee that a used cartridge offered online is authentic.
Test booting and save retention separately
Generation I Pokémon saves are battery-backed. A failed cell can leave the game playable while erasing progress as soon as power is removed. The most valuable evidence in a listing is therefore a real persistence test, not a claim that the battery was recently replaced.
Ask the seller for this exact test
- Start the cartridge and create a new save in the game.
- Power the Game Boy completely off rather than using a reset or immediately restarting.
- Wait before turning it back on; the specialist retailer’s described process includes a power-off wait.
- Restart the system and load the save.
- Provide a photograph or video showing the saved file after the power cycle, if the marketplace allows it.
Ask whether the contacts were cleaned, whether the cartridge needed repeated insertion to boot, and whether the seller has tested it on more than one compatible system. “Boots” proves less than “boots and retains a save after shutdown.”
Understand what a battery statement means
The retailer guide says the save cell is soldered and that replacing it does not preserve an existing save. A seller may honestly report a new battery while still being unable to prove long-term retention, and an old battery may continue working temporarily. If the save test is missing, price the cartridge as unverified and assume that existing progress could be lost.
Do not rely on an exact replacement battery model or a generic repair tutorial for this buying decision. Battery specifications and installation details need to be confirmed for the specific board revision. If you buy a cartridge with a flat cell, budget for specialist repair, accept that the current save may disappear during replacement, and verify the repaired cartridge afterward.
Compare physical condition in a consistent way
| Dimension | What to inspect | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Label | Fading, peeling, tears, writing, water damage, misalignment and signs of replacement. | Collectors may pay more for an original, clean label; players may accept wear if function is strong. |
| Shell | Cracks, chips, deep scratches, discoloration, mismatched halves and tampering around the screw. | Structural damage can worsen and may indicate prior opening or a replacement shell. |
| Contacts and boot | Corrosion, heavy wear, intermittent booting and whether cleaning was required. | Repeated boot failures can require repair and are a reason to use the return period. |
| Save | Tested after a full power-off, battery condition disclosed, or untested. | A working game without verified retention is a different proposition from a tested saver. |
| Completeness | Cartridge only, protective case, manual, box and inserts. | Compare like with like; boxed prices should not set the value of a loose cart. |
| Region and revision | Language, product code, label variant and board revision. | Important for a regional collection and for matching reference photos. |
| Seller confidence | Specific answers, original photos, testing details and a usable return policy. | Documentation reduces the risk of an expensive unknown. |
Photographs should show the front label, rear shell, top edge, screw, contacts and any damage in focus. Stock images, extreme glare and photos that hide the screw or label edges make condition harder to judge.

Red versus Blue: choose the version, then the better cartridge
Red and Blue share the core story. Their main gameplay distinction is version-exclusive Pokémon, so the choice can follow the creatures you want, a collection goal, or which regional release you already own. Neither title is automatically the better purchase when one copy has a verified save and the other is untested.

| Buying priority | Prefer the authentic, region-matched copy with a documented save test and acceptable condition, then compare price. | |
Do not substitute Yellow simply because it is available. Yellow changes the gameplay and belongs in a separate comparison.
Questions to send a seller
Copy these questions into a message and keep the answers with the listing:
- Is this the exact cartridge shown in every photograph?
- Which region and product-code variant is it?
- Is the label original, and are there any repairs or replacement parts?
- Has it been opened? If so, can you provide a clear board photograph?
- Does it boot reliably without repeated reinsertion?
- Can you save, switch the system fully off, wait, restart and confirm the save remains?
- What is the battery status, and was the existing save lost during any replacement?
- Are the contacts corroded, cleaned or repaired?
- What exactly is included: cartridge, case, manual, box or inserts?
- What is the return period if the cartridge fails to boot or retain a save?
Specific answers are more useful than broad assurances such as “100% genuine” or “battery recently done.”

“It plays, so the battery is fine”
Playing and saving are separate tests. Request the complete power-off procedure; otherwise negotiate as if save retention is unknown.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute“The label looks perfect, so it must be original”
Replacement labels can look cleaner than an original that has spent decades in a bag. Check shell, screw and board evidence as well.
“A Phillips screw proves it is fake”
It is a warning sign, not a verdict. A legitimate cart may have been opened, and authenticity still requires multiple consistent clues.

“The cheapest sold copy is the fair price”
Low sales can reflect poor condition, an untested battery, missing parts or a different region. Compare the same attributes rather than one number.
“A boxed listing sets the value of a loose cartridge”
Packaging, manuals and inserts materially change completeness. Keep loose, cased and boxed comparisons separate.

A practical buying decision
- Set your target: choose Red or Blue based on version exclusives and decide whether you want a player copy or a collector-grade example.
- Filter by region: remove listings whose language or product code does not match your target.
- Screen authenticity: compare label, molded markings, screw and board evidence; ask for missing photographs.
- Verify function: obtain boot evidence and the save-after-power-off test.
- Grade condition: record label, shell, contacts and completeness separately instead of relying on “good” or “mint.”
- Benchmark the price: compare recent sold copies with matching attributes. Treat the dated Red examples and the retailer’s Blue asking prices as context, not a universal tariff.
- Protect the transaction: use a return option, keep the seller’s written claims and test the cartridge immediately on arrival.
On arrival, photograph the package before opening, compare the cartridge with the listing, boot it, create a save, power down, wait and reload. If the result differs from the description, stop further cleaning or opening and use the marketplace’s return process.
How much uncertainty is acceptable?
For a low-cost player copy, cosmetic wear and an unremarkable label may be acceptable if authenticity is credible, the game boots and the seller offers returns. For a collection, spend more attention on original-looking printing, matching regional details, shell integrity and board evidence. For either purpose, an unverified save should be reflected in the price because battery service can erase the existing file and requires opening the cartridge.
One specialist retailer reported rejecting roughly 12% of cartridges when buying stock. That is the retailer’s own figure, not an independent industry rate, but it illustrates why a seller’s inspection process and return terms matter. Your goal is not to find a magical single tell; it is to reduce several independent risks before money changes hands.
