What is Peakychu?
Official Pokémon material describes Peakychu as a peculiar-looking Pikachu character in Pokémon Pokopia. The character’s unusually pale appearance may prompt speculation about its type or story, but the cited official material does not identify Peakychu as a Ghost type. Treat that label—and other conclusions drawn from appearance alone—as fan interpretation, not confirmed game information.
In coverage of a Famitsu interview, GamesRadar+ reports that chief director Takuto Edagawa described Peakychu’s “temporal and melancholy feel” as impressive and said the team internally called it “unfortunate Pikachu.” These are remarks as translated and presented by GamesRadar+, not a direct quotation verified against a full English transcript. How the designs fit the game
Pokémon Pokopia is a Nintendo Switch 2 game in which the player takes the role of Ditto, transforms into a human, and works with Pokémon to rebuild a town. The Pokémon Company’s announcement identifies The Pokémon Company, GAME FREAK, and KOEI TECMO as co-developers. The Pokémon Company’s November 13, 2025 announcement describes the game and its development, while the official Pokémon Pokopia page provides the game’s overview. Nintendo’s UK listing identifies the title as a Nintendo Switch 2 game: Nintendo UK product page.
Edagawa also said, in GamesRadar+’s translated account, that Game Freak staff created the Pokémon designs and that the co-development team was “surprised and thrilled” when it first saw them. That interview statement gives context for the team’s reaction; the official announcement independently confirms the companies’ co-development relationship.

Release and sales context
Pokémon Pokopia launched on March 5, 2026. In an August 14, 2026 release, The Pokémon Company and Nintendo reported more than 5 million copies sold worldwide during the first four months after launch. The companies attributed the figure to Nintendo data and said it includes digital sales. Read the sales announcement.
The concept-art gallery is about character designs, not downloadable content. Separately, The Pokémon Company announced on September 9, 2026, that Expansion Pass Part 1 was available, Part 2 was planned for late 2026, and Part 3 for 2027.
