Pokémon Masters EX Sync Grid Guide: How to Spend Sync Orbs and Build a Pair

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

Build a sync grid around a sync pair’s job, not around filling every hexagon. You spend pair-specific sync orbs to activate tiles, while a separate energy limit restricts how many grid skills can be active. Start with the move or passive that defines the pair’s role, check which tiles the current move level unlocks, and then spend energy on the highest-impact effects before taking minor stat boosts.

This guide explains the resource loop, the historical unlock requirements, a repeatable build method for attackers, supports and tech pairs, and the checks that prevent wasted orbs. Exact tile layouts change by pair and can change when grids are expanded, so verify the live grid and labels in Pokémon Masters EX before committing resources.

What a sync grid does

A sync grid is a pair-specific, hexagonal map of upgrade tiles. Each tile can improve the sync pair’s stats, increase the power of a move, restore a limited move use through an MP Refresh effect, or add a passive that activates only under particular battle conditions. The grid is therefore more than a flat stat menu: it lets you tune a pair for a job such as damage, team support, disruption or survival.

The official Pokémon.com feature guide describes sync grids as one of the most involved ways to improve a pair. It also explains the two limits that matter when planning a build:

  • Sync orbs pay the orb cost shown on a tile. General sync orbs must be converted into sync orbs for the particular pair you are enhancing.
  • Energy is a separate, finite budget for activating grid skills. Having enough orbs does not let you activate every tile.

That separation is the reason a full-looking grid is not automatically a good grid. A build can have enough currency for several tiles but still be unable to use them together because of energy. Conversely, a powerful tile may be affordable in energy but unavailable until the pair reaches a higher move level.

The constraints to check before spending

Constraint What it controls What to verify in the game
Pair-specific sync orbs Whether you can pay the orb cost for an activated tile The pair selected for conversion and the orb balance shown on its grid
Energy How many grid skills can be active at the same time The remaining energy after each selected tile
Move level Which tiles are visible or selectable Whether a tile is gated at move level 2/5 or 3/5
Battle conditions Whether a conditional passive will actually trigger The weather, field, status, HP or move conditions your team can maintain
Current grid version Tile positions, expansions and interface labels The live in-game map, especially for newer pairs or recent expansions

The official guide reports a maximum of 60 energy per sync pair. Treat that as a guide-reported mechanic rather than a promise that every current or future grid is identical; check the energy indicator on the pair’s live grid. The same guide says the most powerful tiles are typically locked until move level 2/5 or 3/5. “Typically” matters: a particular pair or later expansion can use different requirements.

How the resource loop works

Collect general sync orbs

Pokémon.com identifies the Sync Orb Area in the Training Area and most events as sources of sync orbs. Its guide says the Sync Orb Area does not require stamina and recommends using all ten daily replays. Menus, replay limits and event rewards can change, so use the current in-game description as the authority for what is available on your account.

Convert them for the pair you are building

General sync orbs are not a universal balance that every pair can spend directly. Convert them into the sync orbs of the target pair, then open that pair’s grid and inspect the orb requirement on each candidate tile. Convert only what you expect to use soon when you are still deciding between several pairs; this keeps your planning flexible and makes it easier to notice which pair is actually short on resources.

Pay both costs when activating a tile

A tile consumes its displayed orb cost and occupies part of the pair’s energy budget. The two costs are independent: a tile can be affordable in orbs but impossible to add because it would exceed remaining energy, or it can fit the energy budget while your pair-specific orb balance is insufficient.

When sync grids become available

The official game announcement for the feature lists completion of Main Story Chapter 11, “Alola’s Rising Stars: Part 2,” as the unlock condition. That announcement is historical and does not establish every current onboarding flow, account requirement or menu path. If the grid option is missing, finish the relevant story content shown by your game and check the current Help or unlock notice rather than relying on an old sequence.

After the feature is available, open the sync-pair menu, select the pair and choose its sync grid. A locked tile should show the reason it cannot be selected, such as move level, insufficient energy or insufficient pair-specific orbs.

A repeatable method for building any pair

  1. Write down the pair’s battle job. Decide whether the pair is mainly dealing damage, keeping the team alive, buffing allies, disrupting an opponent or combining several jobs. Use the role shown in the pair’s move and passive descriptions, not just its star rating.
  2. Choose the move or effect that makes the job work. An attacker may depend on one damaging move; a support may depend on a team buff, healing action or defensive effect; a tech pair may depend on a status, debuff or field condition. Mark that defining action before looking at minor stat tiles.
  3. Check the current move level. Open the grid and note which tiles are available at the pair’s present level. Do not plan around a 3/5 tile if the pair is currently 1/5, and do not assume that every powerful-looking tile uses the same gate.
  4. List candidate tiles and their two costs. Record each tile’s effect, orb cost and energy cost. Include conditional text exactly as shown, because “when the opponent is trapped,” “when HP is full” and similar conditions can make a tile either central or irrelevant to your team.
  5. Reserve energy for defining effects first. Select the damage multiplier, move upgrade, MP Refresh, defensive effect or condition-enabling passive that directly supports the job. Keep enough energy for the most important combination rather than spending it immediately on small stat increases.
  6. Test the team plan against real battles. Ask whether the team can maintain the condition required by each passive, whether the pair has enough move uses to benefit from a Refresh tile, and whether the pair survives long enough for a delayed effect to matter.
  7. Fill leftover energy deliberately. Add useful stats or secondary effects only after the core package fits. If the final tile gives little practical value, leave that energy unused; an incomplete grid can be the correct build.
  8. Convert and spend orbs after the plan is clear. Farm the currently available routes, convert general orbs for this pair, and activate the selected tiles. Recheck the map after updates or grid expansions before copying an old layout.

Build priorities by role

Damage-focused attackers

Start with the move that supplies most of the pair’s damage. A move-power increase or a relevant damage multiplier generally outranks a small attack or special-attack increase when the tile can be used consistently. Next consider effects that improve the attack cycle: an MP Refresh can matter if the move has limited uses, while a passive that requires a condition is valuable only if the team can reliably create and maintain that condition.

Use stat tiles to finish a coherent route, not as the first destination. If a low-cost stat tile blocks a high-impact multiplier because of the energy limit, skip the stat tile. Also check whether the pair attacks physically or specially and whether its damage depends on critical hits, weather, terrain, a status condition or another effect shown in its own kit. A generic increase that does not affect the pair’s main move is a poor use of scarce energy.

Supports and defensive pairs

For a support, define the team problem first. If the pair must keep allies alive, prioritize healing, damage reduction, defensive buffs or an MP Refresh that extends the support’s key action. If the pair’s value comes from raising allies’ offensive stats, choose the buff-enhancing or refresh effect that lets the team reach its intended damage pattern.

Survivability tiles can be better than a small team stat increase when the support is routinely knocked out before its second rotation. Conditional passives should be judged by the actual battle: a tile tied to a full-HP requirement may be unreliable in long fights, while one tied to a condition your team creates every turn can be dependable. Do not spend energy on a support’s personal damage unless that damage is part of the pair’s stated job.

Tech and condition-based pairs

Tech pairs often gain value from status, debuffs, disruption or a field condition rather than raw damage alone. Identify the effect that enables the strategy, then choose tiles that improve its reliability, duration, move uses or payoff. A passive that strengthens a debuffed target is useful only when the pair can apply the debuff consistently and the rest of the team benefits from it.

Separate “enables the condition” from “rewards the condition.” If the grid offers both, budget for the enabling effect first. A damage tile that requires a status you cannot apply reliably is effectively dormant, regardless of its displayed strength. Likewise, a status-focused build may be the wrong choice for a short battle where the team wins before the condition pays off.

How to compare two possible grids

When two routes appear attractive, compare them using the same questions rather than choosing the route with the most highlighted tiles.

Comparison question Why it changes the decision
What is the pair’s intended job? A damage route and a support route solve different team problems; neither is universally best.
What move level is available? A route built around a locked 2/5 or 3/5 tile cannot be used by a lower-level pair.
What does each tile actually improve? Damage, utility, survival and conditional effects have different value in different battles.
How much energy does the route consume? A cheap route may leave room for a second key effect; an expensive route can crowd out useful support tiles.
How many pair-specific orbs are required? Orb availability determines whether the plan is immediately affordable.
Will the team meet the condition? A theoretically strong passive contributes nothing when its trigger is absent or unreliable.
What happens if the battle runs long? Refresh, healing and survival effects gain value when a pair must repeat its rotation.

For an exact named-pair recommendation, use the current in-game grid or a current pair-specific build source. The available references do not establish an optimal layout for any particular sync pair, and older diagrams may omit expansions or changed mechanics.

Energy budgeting without wasting tiles

Think of the energy limit as an opportunity-cost problem. Every selected tile displaces another tile, even when you have abundant orbs. Before activating anything, make a short worksheet with four columns: tile effect, energy cost, orb cost and practical reason to select it.

  • Mark the effects that are essential to the pair’s job.
  • Mark effects that improve consistency, such as an MP Refresh or a passive whose condition your team always meets.
  • Mark optional stats and secondary effects.
  • Remove optional tiles whenever they prevent an essential combination from fitting under the displayed energy limit.

This approach also prevents a common mistake: treating an unused energy point as a failure. If the remaining tile offers only a marginal stat increase or a condition you cannot trigger, leaving it inactive preserves a clear build and avoids spending orbs for no meaningful gain.

Move-level gates and what they mean

Move level is not just a damage statistic; it can determine access to the grid’s strongest skills. The official guide says the most powerful tiles are typically gated at move level 2/5 or 3/5. Inspect the lock text on the current map before investing in a route. A lower-level pair can still benefit from available tiles, but its best eventual build may be different from the build you can activate today.

  1. Build a useful current package from unlocked tiles rather than spending around a tile you cannot reach.
  2. Note the future tile that would change the pair’s role or rotation at 2/5 or 3/5.
  3. When the move level changes, reopen the grid and recalculate energy and orb costs. Do not assume the old selection remains the best combination.

Where to get orbs and how to avoid resource mistakes

Use the Sync Orb Area in the Training Area and event rewards listed by the game. Pokémon.com specifically mentions the area and most events, and its guide reports ten daily replays without stamina. Because event schedules and menu rules are live-service details, confirm the current replay count, reward table and stamina behavior in your client.

Spend general orbs only after selecting a target pair. Conversion is pair-specific, so an early conversion can leave you with a balance that cannot help the pair you decide to build next. If several pairs compete for the same resource, rank them by the immediate battle they must solve and by how many of their defining tiles are unlocked at the current move level.

Common mistakes and fixes

Trying to activate every tile

Symptom: the grid still has attractive tiles, but the energy budget prevents the combination you actually need. Fix: identify the defining move or passive, keep that package, and drop low-value stats or unreliable conditional effects.

Confusing general and pair-specific orbs

Symptom: the general balance looks sufficient, but the selected pair cannot pay a tile’s orb cost. Fix: convert general orbs for the intended pair and check the pair-specific balance before activation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Planning around a locked tile

Symptom: a recommended route contains a tile your pair cannot select. Fix: check the move-level requirement and build from currently unlocked tiles; revisit the route after the pair reaches the required level.

Taking a conditional passive that never triggers

Symptom: the tile looks powerful on paper but produces no noticeable benefit in your battles. Fix: compare its trigger with your team’s actual weather, field, HP, status and move sequence. Replace it with a consistent effect if the condition is not part of your plan.

Copying an old grid image

Symptom: tile positions, costs or available skills do not match a guide. Fix: treat old diagrams as historical references and inspect the current in-game map. Bulbapedia’s sync grid page notes that mechanics and expansions have changed and that some changes added in 2025 are not completely documented there.

Spending on stats before checking the rotation

Symptom: the pair gains numbers but still runs out of move uses, misses its condition or falls before contributing. Fix: prioritize the move-use, survival or condition-enabling tile that fixes the rotation, then add stats with leftover energy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to evaluate a grid after activation

Use several representative battles rather than one short test. Check whether the defining move is used as often as planned, whether an MP Refresh actually changes the rotation, whether the pair survives the point at which it previously failed, and whether a conditional passive activates when expected. If the result is poor, first inspect the condition text and move level before blaming the whole grid; many disappointing builds are simply mismatched to the team’s battle plan.

Record the active tiles and the reason for each one. This makes future adjustments easier when a new event, pair or grid expansion changes the team. It also prevents rebuilding from memory and accidentally converting orbs for a different pair.

What the available references can and cannot confirm

The Pokémon.com feature guide is the primary reference for the general resource loop, tile categories, reported 60-energy limit, move-level gates and orb collection routes. The official game announcement documents the historical story-chapter unlock condition and the role of limited energy. Bulbapedia is useful for a broad description of the hexagonal grid and its history, but it explicitly warns that its coverage of some 2025 changes is incomplete.

None of those references establishes a universally best build for a named pair. Optimal choices depend on the pair’s current move level, the live tile map, the battle mode and the teammates supplying buffs or conditions. For that reason, a responsible build recommendation must name the pair and use current grid data rather than presenting one route as permanent for the entire roster.

A compact decision checklist

  • Have I identified the pair’s actual job in this team?
  • Which move, passive or condition is essential to that job?
  • Is the tile I want unlocked at the pair’s current move level?
  • What are the tile’s orb and energy costs?
  • Does the route leave enough energy for the rest of the core package?
  • Can my team trigger the tile’s condition consistently?
  • Would an MP Refresh or survival effect improve the rotation more than a small stat tile?
  • Have I checked the live Sync Orb Area and event rewards before converting orbs?
  • Am I using a current in-game map rather than assuming an older expansion is unchanged?

The practical answer is simple: spend sync orbs on a small, purposeful set of tiles that makes the pair’s battle plan reliable. Energy, move-level gates and team conditions determine the final shape; a completely filled hexagonal map is optional, not the definition of a successful build.
