Pokémon Heart & Soul vs. Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver: What’s Different?

Pokémon Heart & Soul is not a second official edition of HeartGold or SoulSilver. It is an unofficial Game Boy Advance ROM hack that reworks the Johto adventure in a Gen 3-style game. The project takes inspiration from Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, then changes progression, encounters, customization and quality-of-life systems. HeartGold and SoulSilver remain the official Nintendo DS remakes; Heart & Soul is a separate fan-made interpretation.

The short answer

The biggest difference is format and status. Heart & Soul is a fan project designed for a GBA-style experience, while Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver are official Nintendo DS remakes. Heart & Soul uses the shared Johto setting and a Kanto postgame as a foundation, but it does not attempt to reproduce the DS games one for one.

That distinction affects almost every practical question: how you obtain the game, what systems you encounter, which optional facilities are present, how progression is arranged, and whether an existing save will work after an update. Choose Heart & Soul for a customized, modernized fan interpretation in a Gen 3-style format. Choose HeartGold or SoulSilver when you specifically want the official remake experience.

Heart & Soul and HeartGold/SoulSilver at a glance

Comparison point Pokémon Heart & Soul Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver
Status Unofficial fan-made ROM hack. Official Nintendo DS remakes.
Technical foundation Game Boy Advance-style, using a Gen 3-style foundation. Nintendo DS remake releases.
Relationship to Johto Revisits Johto and includes a Kanto postgame while making its own progression and feature choices. The official remake experience that Heart & Soul cites as an inspiration.
Design goal A distinct reinterpretation rather than a one-to-one copy. The official games themselves, not a fan modification.
Customization and challenge tools Project materials list customization, randomizer options, challenge settings and quality-of-life features. Use the official games as the reference point; the project does not claim that every Heart & Soul system exists in them.
Optional facilities No Pokéathlon Dome; the feature page points instead to the Emerald Battle Frontier and Battle Tents. The project identifies those facilities as differences from its source games.
Kurt’s custom Poké Balls Berries replace Apricorns in the project’s system. Heart & Soul describes this as one of its substitutions.
Distribution The project provides a UPS patch rather than a complete Pokémon ROM. Official game products are separate from the fan project.

What Pokémon Heart & Soul actually is

A fan-made GBA project

Heart & Soul is built around a Game Boy Advance-style presentation and a Gen 3-style technical foundation. Calling it a “GBA version of HeartGold” is therefore misleading. The project borrows ideas and setting elements from several Johto releases, but its format and implementation are its own.

The project’s disclaimer describes it as a fan project and says it is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the relevant rights holders. That status is important when you compare it with HeartGold and SoulSilver: one is an official commercial release, and the other is an independent modification created by a fan team.

It is inspired by several Johto games

The project describes itself as drawing from Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver. That does not mean every route, event, item or system from those games appears unchanged. The project explicitly presents its own choices about progression, encounters, customization and quality of life.

Think of Heart & Soul as a remix with Johto as its organizing theme. The recognizable setting gives returning players a point of reference, but the project’s documented differences are part of the intended design rather than errors to be corrected.

How the story and world relationship differs

Johto remains the foundation

Heart & Soul recreates the Johto journey in its own game structure. This gives it the broad regional identity readers associate with the games named in its inspirations, while allowing the project to rearrange or reinterpret how the adventure unfolds.

Kanto is included as a postgame

The project also includes a Kanto postgame. The existence of that postgame is a documented feature, but Heart & Soul’s published materials do not establish that its sequence, encounters or rewards match HeartGold and SoulSilver exactly. Treat Kanto as a continuation within Heart & Soul, not proof that the fan project reproduces the official remakes’ postgame in detail.

Progression is intentionally different

The project’s FAQ and feature documentation warn that features and progression differ intentionally from the original games. A player following a guide written for HeartGold or SoulSilver should therefore expect route order, event triggers, available encounters or required tasks to diverge. Familiarity with Johto can help with orientation, but it is not a substitute for checking Heart & Soul’s own documentation.

Platform and format: GBA-style versus Nintendo DS

The platform difference is more than a label. Heart & Soul is designed around a GBA-style foundation, while HeartGold and SoulSilver are Nintendo DS releases. That changes the technical context in which their mechanics, interface and presentation are delivered.

  • Heart & Soul: a fan-made project using a Gen 3-style GBA foundation.
  • HeartGold and SoulSilver: the official DS remakes that the project names among its inspirations.
  • Practical result: the same Johto premise can feel different because the underlying game structure and added systems are not the same.

The project’s published materials do not establish a feature-by-feature graphics, audio or performance benchmark, so those areas should not be treated as settled comparisons. The defensible distinction is the platform foundation and the project’s documented design choices.

Modern and customizable mechanics in Heart & Soul

Heart & Soul’s most obvious design departure is its attempt to add modern conveniences and player-controlled options to a Gen 3-style Johto game. Project materials list the following systems.

Following Pokémon

Pokémon can follow the player in the overworld. This is a deliberate modernization associated with the project’s feature set. The listing establishes the feature’s presence, but it does not claim that every behavior or interaction matches the implementation in an official remake.

Day and night encounters

Encounter availability can change by time of day. That adds another layer to team planning and exploration: the same area may not offer an identical encounter pool at every time. Because the project lists this as a feature rather than publishing a complete encounter table, consult the project’s current player documentation for species-by-area details.

Customization

Customization options are part of the project’s stated feature set. The exact menus and cosmetic choices can change between releases, so use the version-specific documentation when you need an exact instruction instead of assuming the options work like those in HeartGold or SoulSilver.

Randomizer options

Heart & Soul includes randomizer settings. These are optional tools for players who want a less predictable run, not evidence that the standard game has random encounters everywhere. Before starting a randomized save, record the settings you chose; otherwise, reproducing a particular run or troubleshooting an unexpected encounter table becomes difficult.

2 Box Protector Heartgold/Soulsilver case for Nintendo DS NTSC ONLY
  • Precise fit: Specially designed for Nintendo DS NTSC version consoles, it perfectly matches the cartridge cases of Heartgold and Soulsilver games, providing all-around fit protection against scratches and bumps during transportation or daily storage
  • Dual Protection: Each set contains two protective cases, which can store two game cartridges at the same time. Made of high-strength plastic material, the cases are rugged and have good impact resistance, which can effectively resist external pressure and impact to ensure the safety of the items inside the case
  • Simple design: The appearance design is simple and generous, with transparent as the main color, which is convenient for players to quickly identify the games inside the box. At the same time, the thin and lightweight design will not take up too much space, whether it is placed on the bookshelf, drawer or carry out, it is very convenient
  • Dust and Moisture Resistant: The tightly fitting lid design effectively blocks dust, water vapor and other contaminants from entering the case, preventing the quality of the game cartridge and the box from being affected by moisture or dust, and prolonging its service life
  • NTSC only: This case is only suitable for NTSC version of Nintendo DS, customized for the size and specifications of this version of the console to ensure the best fit and provide exclusive protection for users of specific versions of the console

Challenge settings

The project also lists challenge settings. Their purpose is to let players alter the difficulty or constraints of a playthrough, but the project’s published feature description does not define every rule or preset. Read the in-game descriptions and current documentation before committing to a setting that may affect how you want to play.

Quality-of-life and newer mechanics

Quality-of-life options and modern mechanics are part of Heart & Soul’s stated goals. “Modern” here means the project is adding conveniences and systems beyond a basic Gen 3-style baseline; it does not mean the fan project contains every mechanic from later official Pokémon releases. The project’s feature list is the reliable boundary.

Facilities and item systems that were changed

No Pokéathlon Dome

Heart & Soul does not include the Pokéathlon Dome. This is one of the clearest differences for players coming from HeartGold or SoulSilver, where the Pokéathlon is a recognizable optional activity. Do not keep searching for the Dome as though it were hidden behind a late-game unlock; the project documents its absence.

Battle Frontier and Battle Tents instead

In place of the Pokéathlon Dome, the project’s feature page points to the Emerald Battle Frontier and Battle Tents. These are substitutions within Heart & Soul’s own structure, not an indication that the DS facility was moved intact. If your priority is the specific Pokéathlon activity, Heart & Soul is not a replacement for that feature.

Berries replace Apricorns for Kurt’s custom Poké Balls

Heart & Soul changes the material used for Kurt’s custom Poké Balls: berries replace Apricorns. The familiar customization concept remains part of the comparison, but the resource loop is different. A guide that tells you to collect Apricorns for this purpose will not describe the project’s documented system accurately.

How Heart & Soul is obtained

The project distributes a UPS patch

The official FAQ says the project site provides a UPS patch rather than distributing a complete Pokémon ROM. That is the practical distinction to remember when you look for the project: you are not downloading an official DS game, and the project does not present a complete ROM as its distribution format.

  • Play dozens of rhythm and dance mini-games featuring hit Victorious songs
  1. Read the project’s current FAQ and release information. Confirm the version you intend to use before preparing a save or applying anything.
  2. Use the project’s patch instructions. Follow the exact procedure and compatibility notes published for that release rather than relying on a guide for another ROM hack.
  3. Keep your files and saves organized by version. Label backups with the release number so you can identify which save belongs to which build.
  4. Check local law and ownership requirements. The project materials do not settle jurisdiction-specific questions about ROM ownership or use, so do not treat the patch description as legal advice.

HeartGold and SoulSilver are separate official game products. No current official listing established availability, condition, regional compatibility or current retailer listings, so verify those details independently if you are trying to obtain the original remakes.

Version 2.0.4 and save compatibility

The project homepage lists Pokémon Heart & Soul v2.0.4 as released on August 28, 2026. The FAQ gives a specific save warning: saves made before version 2.0 are not compatible with v2.0.4, while saves made on v2.0.0 remain compatible with v2.0.4.

Starting save version Using it with v2.0.4 What to do
Pre-v2.0 Not compatible according to the FAQ. Start a new save for v2.0.4; keep the old save as an archive rather than overwriting it.
v2.0.0 Compatible according to the FAQ. Back up the save before updating and follow the project’s migration instructions.
Another or unknown build Not established by the cited compatibility note. Check the current release notes and FAQ before opening the save in v2.0.4.

Version information can change as the project is updated. Confirm the homepage and FAQ immediately before upgrading, especially if a newer release has appeared since the v2.0.4 announcement.

A safe save-management routine

  • Make a copy of the entire save file before changing versions.
  • Record the exact build that created the save.
  • Do not assume that a save from a pre-v2.0 release can be converted simply because the game still launches.
  • Use the project’s current compatibility instructions when moving from v2.0.0 to v2.0.4.
  • Keep the original backup untouched until you have confirmed that the updated save loads and behaves normally.

Which game should you choose?

Choose Heart & Soul if you want a customized fan interpretation

Heart & Soul is the better fit if your interest is a Johto adventure in a GBA-style format with project-specific changes. Its documented appeal is the combination of a familiar region, a Kanto postgame, following Pokémon, time-based encounters, customization, randomizer and challenge tools, and quality-of-life additions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It also suits players who enjoy comparing design decisions: the absence of the Pokéathlon Dome, the use of the Emerald Battle Frontier and Battle Tents, and the berry-based replacement for Apricorns make the project meaningfully different rather than simply smaller.

Choose HeartGold or SoulSilver if you want the official remakes

The official DS games are the appropriate choice when “the original remakes” is the requirement. They are not interchangeable with a fan hack, and Heart & Soul’s feature list should not be used to infer that the official releases contain the same customization, randomizer or challenge systems.

Choose based on the facility you care about

If the Pokéathlon Dome is central to what you want to play, Heart & Soul’s documented omission settles the choice: look to the official remakes instead. If you would rather have the project’s Battle Frontier and Battle Tent substitutions, the fan project offers a different optional-content path.

Choose based on save continuity

If you already have a Heart & Soul save, first identify its version. A pre-v2.0 save cannot be carried into v2.0.4 according to the FAQ, whereas a v2.0.0 save can. This compatibility issue does not apply as a general comparison between the fan project and the official DS games; it is a Heart & Soul version-management concern.

Common misconceptions to avoid

  • “Heart & Soul is an official GBA port.” It is an unofficial fan-made ROM hack.
  • “It is a direct remake of HeartGold and SoulSilver.” The project draws from those games but intentionally changes progression and features.
  • “Every HeartGold feature is present somewhere.” The Pokéathlon Dome is specifically absent, with other facilities highlighted instead.
  • “Apricorn guides apply unchanged.” The project says berries replace Apricorns for Kurt’s custom Poké Balls.
  • “Any old save should open in the current release.” The FAQ says pre-v2.0 saves are not compatible with v2.0.4.
  • “The patch is the complete game.” The project describes distributing a UPS patch rather than a complete Pokémon ROM.

What the available documentation does not establish

The project materials support a clear comparison of status, platform foundation, broad story scope, listed mechanics, substitutions, distribution format and the v2.0.4 save rule. They do not provide a complete statistical comparison, a full encounter spreadsheet, a route-by-route progression map or a publisher-backed technical benchmark. Do not infer those details from the fact that both experiences are set around Johto.

Likewise, current retailer pricing, physical-copy condition, regional compatibility and affiliate availability for the official DS games require a separate, current check. The release date and compatibility information above are tied to the project’s own homepage and FAQ and should be rechecked whenever a new build is announced.

Bottom line: a different design, not a different official edition

Heart & Soul and HeartGold/SoulSilver share a Johto foundation, but they serve different purposes. Heart & Soul is an unofficial GBA-style reinterpretation with modern options, customization and deliberate substitutions. HeartGold and SoulSilver are the official DS remakes. The right choice depends on whether you want the project’s added flexibility and alternate facilities or the official remake experience itself.
