Pokémon Heart & Soul is a fan-made Game Boy Advance ROM hack that revisits Johto through the lens of both Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal and their Nintendo DS remakes, HeartGold and SoulSilver. Calling it “a love letter to Gen 2” is a fair description of its direction—but that phrase is a player’s opinion, not an official developer slogan. It is a modernized tribute, not HeartGold or SoulSilver simply ported to a GBA.
What Pokémon Heart & Soul is
The project describes Heart & Soul 2.0 as a GBA hack that “remakes GSC and demakes HGSS.” In practical terms, it brings the familiar Johto adventure into an Emerald-based development framework, drawing on the original Game Boy Color games and their later remakes. The project team says it brings Johto and its story to modern GBA decompilation hacking. Project repository

It is a fan project, not an official Pokémon release from Nintendo or The Pokémon Company. Its foundation is the Johto experience, but the developers explicitly say the result is not intended to reproduce either GSC or HGSS exactly. Some differences are deliberate. PokéCommunity project thread

Why “a love letter to Gen 2” fits
The phrase captures the game’s focus: it returns to Johto, its recognizable story, and the Kanto postgame, while drawing from both generations of official Johto games. A player described it as “pretty much a love letter to Gen 2,” which is useful as a reader’s reaction, not as a claim that the developers use that tagline. Player discussion
#1 Best Overall
- It features a more powerful processor than any previous portable system, for faster, smoother gameplay
- The high-resolution, full color screen makes the game jump out at you -- 50% bigger than Game Boy Color
- Two new buttons, L & R, bring you more control & game options
- Extended battery life lets you play for up to 15 hours on a pair of AA batteries
- Compact Game Paks let you store your game progress & are smaller then Game Boy Color Paks
That combination makes “tribute” or “remake-demake hybrid” more precise than “GBA version of HeartGold and SoulSilver.” It preserves a familiar foundation while adapting and expanding systems for a different platform and style of play.
What it keeps, changes, and adds
Project materials describe a full Johto story and Kanto postgame, with a roster centered on the first three generations and selected later evolutions. The feature list includes following Pokémon, day-and-night encounters, rematches, Safari Zones, and customization and convenience options. Availability may differ by build, so consult the documentation for the version you plan to play. Feature list and project thread

How it differs from the official Johto games
| Comparison | Heart & Soul | Official Johto games |
|---|---|---|
| Platform | Fan-made GBA ROM hack | Gold, Silver, and Crystal were Game Boy Color releases; HeartGold and SoulSilver were Nintendo DS releases |
| Relationship to the story | Revisits the Johto story and Kanto postgame, with intentional changes | Official releases with their own original versions of the Johto adventure |
| Systems | Combines features and options associated with later games and the hack’s own design | Features vary by title and generation |
| Release and updates | Unofficial project builds; version and save compatibility require attention | Official retail releases |
It is best understood as an alternative way to revisit Johto, not a substitute that reproduces every detail of a particular official game. The project’s FAQ also describes revisions across systems such as the Pokégear radio and rematches, TMs, learnsets, abilities, hidden items, and Voltorb Flip. Project FAQ

Version labels differ across project pages: the repository README identifies 2.0.1 as its last official release, while the project thread and FAQ show other version labels. Those labels alone do not establish which build is currently authoritative across all official channels. Check the project’s official download information and identify the exact build before applying a patch. Project repository and download information
Pay particular attention to save compatibility: the project thread says saves from before the 2.0 engine rebuild are not compatible with versions after 2.0. Back up any existing save before changing builds. Heart & Soul is distributed as a ROM hack or patch rather than a boxed release; use the project’s sanctioned channels for the patch and follow its instructions for the required base game. Do not download or share unauthorized copies of a commercial ROM. Project thread and compatibility notice
