Keep a Pokémon when it serves a clear purpose for your collection or gameplay; transfer it only after appraisal and a final status check; power it up only when the expected use justifies the Stardust and Candy. Transfer is permanent, appraisal does not improve when you evolve or power up, and a full storage box has only two documented remedies: transfer Pokémon or buy more capacity in the in-game Shop.
There is no single species list or appraisal cutoff that is correct for every Trainer. A collector, a player preparing for battles, and someone saving an evolution candidate can reasonably keep different Pokémon. The workflow below separates the game’s fixed mechanics from recommendations you can adapt to your goals.

Start with the purpose of the Pokémon
Before judging stars or combat power, decide why this Pokémon might remain in your collection. Write down the reason in your own terms: a personal favorite, a rare form, a planned evolution, a future battle role, or simply a useful reserve. These are decision prompts, not rules imposed by the game. If you cannot identify a reason to keep it, that is a signal to inspect it more closely before transferring, not an instruction to delete it immediately.

Collection reasons
- Personal attachment or a memorable catch.
- A form, costume, gender, size, or other feature you intentionally collect.
- A Pokémon reserved for a planned evolution or trade.
Gameplay reasons
- A candidate you may use in a battle team.
- A Pokémon whose appraisal and available resources make investment sensible for your own plans.
- A duplicate you are retaining temporarily while deciding which specimen is stronger for a particular role.
The official mechanics do not establish one universal species ranking, ideal individual-values threshold, or keep list. Treat any mode-specific cutoff as a strategy recommendation and make sure it matches the battles or collection goals you actually pursue.

What appraisal tells you—and what it cannot do
Use the in-game appraisal before spending Stardust or Candy. The Team Leader’s evaluation shows an overall rating of up to three stars and separate assessments for Attack, Defense, and HP. Those are information about the Pokémon you already have; they are not a progression system.
Appraisal is not an upgrade
Evolving does not improve appraisal. Powering up does not improve appraisal either. A Pokémon with a lower appraisal remains lower after you spend resources on it, so do the appraisal first and use the result in your keep-or-invest decision.
Purifying a Shadow Pokémon is the specific action identified by the official appraisal guidance as improving its appraisal. That does not mean purification is automatically the best choice for every Shadow Pokémon; weigh the purpose you assigned to it and the resources involved.

How to use the result
- Open the Pokémon’s appraisal view and note the star rating.
- Inspect the individual Attack, Defense, and HP assessments rather than relying only on the stars.
- Compare that information with your intended use. A high rating alone does not guarantee that the Pokémon is optimal in every game mode.
- Only then decide whether to keep it, transfer it, or reserve it for later review.
When transferring is the right space-saving choice
Transferring removes the Pokémon from your collection, frees a storage slot, and gives you Candy associated with that Pokémon’s evolution family. The trade-off is final: the Pokémon cannot be recovered. The Pokémon GO Help Center states, “You’ll receive Candy in exchange for transferring a Pokémon, but be careful: you can’t get Pokémon back after you’ve transferred them.”

Single-transfer checklist
Use this check immediately before confirming a transfer:
- Confirm that the Pokémon is not a personal or collection favorite.
- Confirm that it is not your active Buddy.
- Confirm that it is not currently defending a Gym.
- Check appraisal and any planned evolution, trade, or battle purpose one final time.
- Make sure you selected the intended Pokémon, then confirm the transfer only when you accept that it is irreversible.
An active Buddy, a favorited Pokémon, and a Pokémon defending a Gym cannot be transferred through the single-Pokémon process. If the game blocks the action, clear the relevant status first or choose another candidate; do not assume the block is an error.
Bulk-transfer safeguards
Bulk transfer is faster for routine duplicates but has stricter protections. The official guidance says that Shiny, Lucky, and Good Buddy-or-higher Pokémon cannot be bulk transferred. Bulk transfer of Legendary or Mythical Pokémon requires the relevant setting to be enabled, and some specific Legendary and Mythical Pokémon cannot be selected for transfer at all.
For that reason, use bulk selection only after sorting your list carefully. A practical approach is to process ordinary duplicates in one pass, then review anything rare, favorited, Lucky, Shiny, Buddy-related, Legendary, or Mythical separately.

When keeping a Pokémon is worth the slot
Storage is limited, but the value of a slot depends on your plans. Keep a Pokémon when at least one of these statements is true:
- You would regret losing it because of personal or collection value.
- You have a specific evolution, trade, or battle plan for it.
- Its appraisal and moves or form, as relevant to your plan, make it a better candidate than duplicates you can safely release.
- You are still gathering information and are not ready to make an irreversible decision.
Keeping every duplicate “just in case” eventually creates the same full-storage problem without a decision rule. Mark your intentional keeps—using favorites or another method you trust—and review unmarked duplicates in batches. The game’s mechanics do not require you to keep a fixed number of each species; choose a number that fits your collection goals and available space.
Powering up: what changes and what it costs
A power-up raises the Pokémon’s CP and HP. It consumes Stardust and Candy from that Pokémon’s evolution family. As the Pokémon becomes stronger, the cost can increase. Higher power-up levels require Candy XL, which the official guidance says players can begin collecting at Trainer level 31.

- Stardust: a shared resource used across Pokémon, so spending it on one candidate reduces what remains for others.
- Family Candy: tied to the Pokémon’s evolution family rather than being interchangeable with Candy from another species.
- Candy XL: required for higher power-up levels; collection can begin at level 31.
The help guidance lists catching, transferring, hatching, evolving, trading, feeding Pokémon at Gyms, and walking with a Buddy among possible Candy XL sources. Because costs may rise with strength, decide the intended use before repeatedly tapping Power Up.

A sensible investment sequence
- Appraise the Pokémon and record its Attack, Defense, and HP assessments.
- Identify the job you want it to perform or the collection reason for keeping it.
- Check that you have enough family Candy and Stardust for the level you actually intend to reach.
- Power up only after accepting that those resources cannot be used on another candidate.
- Reassess before additional levels, especially once Candy XL is involved.
Powering up is an investment decision, not a way to repair a disappointing appraisal. If appraisal is the concern, spending resources will not change it.
Should you evolve or power up first?
Neither action improves appraisal, so the answer is not “power up first to raise the rating” or “evolve first to fix the IVs.” Appraisal remains an information point about the Pokémon you started with.
Choose the order based on the immediate goal you have established. If you need to know what the evolved Pokémon looks like or whether it fits a planned role before committing more Stardust, evolving first can reduce the risk of investing in a candidate you later reject. If you already know the exact candidate and only need additional CP or HP for its current use, a power-up may be the next step. The available guidance does not prescribe one universal order or a single ideal appraisal value.

An orange dot on the main menu can indicate that Pokémon storage or the Item Bag is full. For Pokémon storage, the official support guidance identifies two approaches:
Best Value
- Transfer Pokémon: review candidates, confirm their status, and transfer only those you are prepared to lose permanently. You receive Candy and free a slot.
- Buy a storage upgrade in the in-game Shop: this increases capacity and lets you retain the current collection.
The support material confirms that the upgrade exists but does not establish a current maximum capacity, increment size, or regional price. Those values can change with the live game and region, so check the Shop in your own account before relying on a number.
Transfer or upgrade?
| Decision factor | Transfer | Storage upgrade |
|---|---|---|
| Recoverability | Permanent; the Pokémon cannot be recovered. | The collection is retained. |
| Immediate space | Frees a slot when the transfer completes. | Increases available capacity. |
| What you receive or spend | Provides Candy from the Pokémon’s evolution family. | Requires an in-game Shop purchase; current price is shown in the live Shop. |
| Best fit | Duplicates or other Pokémon you have deliberately decided not to keep. | A collection whose contents you want to preserve. |
If the box is full during an active event or catching session, an upgrade avoids making a rushed irreversible decision. If you routinely accumulate unmarked duplicates, a review-and-transfer habit may solve the underlying problem without purchasing capacity.
A complete storage review workflow
- Define the reason to keep. Classify each candidate as collection, battle, evolution, trade, or undecided.
- Appraise before investing. Record stars and Attack, Defense, and HP.
- Separate protected or restricted Pokémon. Check favorite, active Buddy, Gym defender, Shiny, Lucky, Good Buddy-or-higher, Legendary, and Mythical status before using bulk actions.
- Mark intentional keeps. Use favorites or a consistent personal system so later reviews do not repeat the same judgment.
- Transfer only after the final confirmation. Verify the name, form, and status; then accept the permanent loss in exchange for Candy and space.
- Choose capacity deliberately. If the remaining collection is valuable or you need time, inspect the in-game Shop upgrade. If duplicates are clearly outside your plan, transfer them.
- Invest last. Spend Stardust, family Candy, and—at higher levels—Candy XL only on Pokémon that survived the keep decision.
Common mistakes and fixes
“I powered it up, so the appraisal should be better.”
It will not be. Appraisal does not improve through powering up or evolving. Appraise first and treat power-ups as CP and HP increases only.
“Bulk transfer is safe for every duplicate.”
It is not. Shiny, Lucky, and Good Buddy-or-higher Pokémon are protected from bulk transfer, and Legendary or Mythical bulk transfer has additional settings and selection restrictions. Review special-status Pokémon separately.
“A three-star Pokémon is automatically the best choice.”
Stars are useful information, but the official guidance does not make them a universal battle or collection verdict. Apply the result to the role you selected.
“I can recover it if I change my mind.”
You cannot recover a transferred Pokémon. Treat the confirmation screen as the last checkpoint, not a reversible archive action.
“The storage cap online is current everywhere.”
Capacity, upgrade increments, and prices can be version- and region-sensitive. The official support material confirms the Shop option but omits those figures, so verify your live Shop rather than relying on an old number.
Quick Recap
Practical decision rules
- Keep: when the Pokémon has a defined personal, collection, evolution, trade, or battle purpose.
- Transfer: when you have checked appraisal and status, have no remaining purpose for it, and accept permanent loss for the Candy and free slot.
- Power up: only after the Pokémon is a deliberate keep and the CP/HP increase is worth the Stardust, family Candy, and possible Candy XL.
- Upgrade storage: when retaining the collection matters more than making immediate transfer decisions and the live Shop terms suit you.
