What is the difference between Routes and Daily Adventure Incense?
A Route is a pre-defined path that you follow while exploring. It has a starting point and an endpoint, or it can be configured as a loop. Routes may be created by Niantic, official partners or other Trainers, so the quality, length and availability of paths vary by location. Following one can reveal Pokémon and special bonuses, and finishing it awards a Route badge and rewards.

Daily Adventure Incense is an item effect rather than a path. When activated, it attracts unexpected wild Pokémon for 15 minutes, but only while you are moving in the real world. It does not tell you where to walk, provide a mapped destination or create a completion badge.

That distinction matters more than the word “exploring.” A Route answers “Where should I go and what progress can I record?” Incense answers “Can I make the next 15 minutes of walking more encounter-focused?”
Which option is better for your goal?
Choose Routes for a known, mapped walk
Routes are the better fit when you want your outing to have a defined course. You can inspect a path before committing, follow its direction, pause and resume tracking, and finish with a recorded completion. This is useful when you are visiting an unfamiliar area, planning a landmark-to-landmark walk or trying to build progress on a particular Route badge.
A Route can be one-way, reversible or a loop, depending on the creator’s settings. Previewing those details prevents a common mismatch: selecting a one-way path when you actually need to return to your starting point, or choosing a loop when you wanted a direct destination.

Daily Adventure Incense is the better fit when you already know where you can walk and want a brief burst of unpredictable encounters. Its 15-minute limit suits a commute segment, a quick neighborhood loop, a break from work or any other outing in which you cannot commit to a longer route.
Because the item does not define a path, you can use it wherever movement is practical. The trade-off is that it gives you no route-progress target and no guarantee of a particular species or encounter rate. The official mechanics establish the 15-minute duration and movement requirement, not a universal number of Pokémon or a higher reward value than Routes.

How to find and complete a Pokémon GO Route
1. Find nearby Routes
Open the Nearby menu in Pokémon GO and look for the Routes section. Routes can also be explored through Campfire. The map view is the starting point for locating both Routes and Daily Adventure Incense, but the two tools appear there for different purposes.
2. Preview the path before starting
Select a Route preview and check the information provided:

- Distance and estimated completion time.
- Whether the path is one-way, reversible or a loop.
- The Route creator.
- Tags and the creator’s description.
- The location of the starting point and the direction you will follow.
Use the preview to match the Route to your available time and walking conditions. A Route’s displayed length is not a promise that every player will finish in exactly the estimated time; pace, stops, crossings and app interaction can change the real duration.
3. Reach the starting point
Selecting a Route in the app does not mean tracking begins immediately from your current position. You must be at the Route’s start point and select it in Pokémon GO to begin. If the start is across a busy road, inside a restricted area or farther away than expected, choose another Route rather than forcing the approach.
4. Follow, pause and resume
While the Route is active, follow its mapped course. Pokémon GO allows you to pause and resume Route progress, which helps when you need to stop safely, wait at a crossing or take a short break. Pausing is a tracking control; it is not the same as completing the Route.
5. Confirm completion at the end
When you reach the endpoint, complete the separate confirmation step in the app. This extra check is useful if you are looking for Zygarde Cells: you can review the end-of-Route state and check for a Cell you may have missed before confirming completion.

Completing the Route awards its badge and rewards. Repeating a Route can level up that Route’s badge, giving a longer-term reason to return to the same path. The badge and rewards are tied to completion, not merely to opening a preview or walking near the line.
How long can a Route be?
Niantic’s Route creator guidance allows Route lengths from 0.5 km to 20 km and recommends no more than 2 km to make a Route accessible to more Trainers. Those figures describe creator guidance and supported Route lengths; they are not a universal requirement that every player must walk a particular distance.
For a player choosing between options, the individual Route preview is more useful than the general range. A 0.5 km Route may suit a quick stop, while a multi-kilometer Route requires a larger time and battery commitment. A loop can return you to your starting area, whereas a one-way Route may require separate transport or a second walk back.

How to use Daily Adventure Incense correctly
1. Check your item and ball situation
Daily Adventure Incense is granted once per day at local midnight. You can carry only one at a time, and the current one must be fully used before the next daily grant becomes available. If you have an unused Incense, use it before expecting the following day’s grant.
There is also a timing edge case: the official guidance advises using the daily Incense before 11:44 p.m. local time. It is unavailable from 11:45 p.m. until midnight. Treat that interval as a cutoff window rather than assuming an activation at 11:59 p.m. will work.
2. Activate it from the map or inventory
Open the map or your item inventory and activate Daily Adventure Incense. The effect lasts 15 minutes. Start it only when you can move, because standing still does not satisfy the condition that attracts the Incense Pokémon.
3. Keep moving in the real world
Walk continuously where it is safe and legal to do so. The item attracts unexpected wild Pokémon as long as you are moving in the real world. It does not function as a stationary lure that you can activate and leave running while remaining in one place.
4. Identify Incense-attracted encounters
Pokémon attracted by Incense are marked by a blue swirl on the map. On the encounter screen, a small blue Incense icon identifies the attraction. These indicators help distinguish an Incense encounter from an ordinary wild spawn.
5. Watch the 15-minute clock
Use the window deliberately: have your walking route, phone access and Poké Balls ready before activation. The effect ends when the 15 minutes are over, so activating it immediately before a long stop wastes part of the available time.
6. Understand the automatic Poké Ball support
If you have 30 or fewer total Poké Balls, Great Balls and Ultra Balls when you activate Daily Adventure Incense, Niantic says the game grants 30 Poké Balls, provided there is room in your Item Bag. The condition is based on the combined total of those three ball types, not on Poké Balls alone. If the Item Bag is full, the grant cannot be added.

What Routes and Incense do not guarantee
It is tempting to declare one feature the better farming method, but the official mechanics do not establish a universal encounter rate or reward advantage for either one. Routes may reveal Pokémon and special bonuses, and their completion supplies a badge and rewards. Daily Adventure Incense supplies unexpected encounters during a 15-minute moving session. Neither description proves that Routes always produce more Pokémon or that Incense is inherently more rewarding.
Local conditions also matter. Route availability is local and partly player-generated, so two neighborhoods can offer very different choices. Incense avoids that dependency, but it still depends on your ability to keep moving and on having enough time and item capacity to use the session effectively.
Planning examples: which should you activate?
You have 10 minutes before an appointment
Daily Adventure Incense is the practical choice if you can walk for at least part of that time. A Route may take longer than the time available, and leaving before its completion means you do not receive the completion result.
You are visiting a new city for an afternoon
Start by previewing nearby Routes. A well-described loop or reversible path can give your sightseeing a clear structure, estimated duration and a completion target. Save Daily Adventure Incense for a segment when you are already walking and want extra unexpected encounters.
You want to level a particular badge
Choose the relevant Route and repeat it when its distance and direction fit your plans. Route badge progress is tied to completing that path, not to using Incense while walking elsewhere.
Your neighborhood has no convenient Route
Use Daily Adventure Incense during a safe walking outing. Since it does not require a nearby Route start point, it remains useful even when local Route coverage is sparse.

The two features address different jobs, so you may choose to track a Route and activate Incense during the same walk. However, the official information reviewed does not establish a special interaction, bonus or multiplier for combining them. Treat any simultaneous use as a personal play choice, not as a promised optimization.
Common mistakes and fixes
Starting a Route away from its start point
Symptom: You selected a Route but no progress begins. Fix: Return to the displayed start point and select the Route there. Preview the approach before committing, especially for one-way paths.
Expecting Incense to work while stationary
Symptom: Few or no Incense-attracted Pokémon appear while you are sitting still. Fix: Move in the real world for the duration, and watch for the blue swirl and blue Incense icon.
Assuming an unfinished Route awards its badge
Symptom: You walk part of a path but see no completion reward. Fix: Reach the endpoint and perform the separate completion confirmation. Pausing and resuming preserves the distinction between progress and completion.

Saving an unused Incense for after midnight
Symptom: The next daily grant does not appear. Fix: Fully use the current Daily Adventure Incense first. Remember the 11:45 p.m. to midnight unavailable period and the recommendation to activate it before 11:44 p.m. local time.
Missing the 30-ball grant
Symptom: No 30 Poké Balls were added. Fix: At activation, your combined Poké Ball, Great Ball and Ultra Ball total must be 30 or fewer, and your Item Bag must have space.
Choosing by distance alone
Symptom: A Route is technically short but inconvenient or unsuitable. Fix: Check direction type, estimated time, creator, tags, description and starting point—not only kilometers.
A simple decision process
- Define the outing. If you need a destination, path or completion target, begin with Routes. If you only have a short moving window, begin with Daily Adventure Incense.
- Check local Route options. Preview nearby distance, estimated time, direction and creator details. If no suitable Route exists, Incense may be the better fit.
- Check the clock. Incense provides 15 minutes and has a late-night availability cutoff. A Route may require substantially more time depending on its length.
- Check your inventory. For Incense, confirm that you can carry it, have Item Bag space and understand the conditional 30-ball grant.
- Start only when conditions match. Reach a Route’s starting point before selecting it, or activate Incense when you can keep moving.
- Judge success by the correct result. For Routes, success is a completed path, badge and rewards. For Incense, success is making productive use of the moving 15-minute encounter window.
Bottom line for explorers
Pick Routes when exploration means following a planned course, recording progress and earning a completion badge. Pick Daily Adventure Incense when exploration means walking now and seeing what unexpected Pokémon appear for 15 minutes. If a nearby Route fits your time, it gives the outing structure; if not, Incense provides a flexible encounter session without depending on local Route availability.
