To check your chances, look at the announcement for the event you are playing; for regular Smeargle attempts, the official sources reviewed do not establish current odds or a daily cap.
What a Pokémon GO photobomb is
GO Snapshot is Pokémon GO’s photo feature, and it is associated with surprise photobomb encounters. Niantic’s official 2019 retrospective says the feature “even introduced the photobombing Smeargle!” The same retrospective documents Team GO Rocket appearing as a GO Snapshot photobomb during GO Fest 2019, so Smeargle is the original documented example, not the only one.

How often do photobombs happen?
A precise ordinary-day frequency cannot be stated from the official sources reviewed. They do not verify current Smeargle odds, an ordinary-day daily cap, or session-by-session rules. Treat player-reported rates and tactics as unconfirmed rather than as current game mechanics.
Event opportunities are different: Niantic may announce snapshot encounters with a named Pokémon and a stated daily number. Those event counts apply to the specified schedule; they do not establish the usual Smeargle rate or a universal photobomb limit.

How to try for an event snapshot encounter
- Check the official event announcement. Confirm the local date and hours, eligible snapshot Pokémon, number of encounters available per day, and any location or ticket restrictions.
- Take snapshots during the announced window. Use GO Snapshot while the event is active, following the announcement’s instructions.
- Check for the surprise encounter. If the event specifies multiple opportunities, do not assume other events offer the same number or Pokémon.
For example, Niantic’s GO Wild Area 2026 announcement lists three GO Snapshot surprise event encounters per day on applicable event days, with certain Steel- and Dragon-type Pokémon potentially appearing. This is a limit for that event schedule, not a regular Smeargle allowance. Event dates and terms are time-bound, so use the relevant announcement for the event you plan to play.
What to expect on an ordinary day
The official sources reviewed do not confirm how many snapshots to take, how frequently to try, or how many ordinary-day Smeargle encounters are allowed. You can take snapshots and check for a surprise, but no particular attempt sequence or number of photos can be presented as a guaranteed method. Niantic’s Pokémon GO Help Center is its official support destination; the reviewed support results did not provide an ordinary-day rate or cap.

Stay safe while playing
Pay attention to your surroundings while taking photos or moving between locations. A Community Day announcement advises: “Please be aware of your surroundings and follow guidelines from local health authorities when playing Pokémon GO.” See the official Community Day announcement.
