If a Max Battle is missing in Pokémon GO, first look for an active Power Spot in both the map and the Nearby menu. Power Spots rotate, close, and can be hidden when inactive, so a familiar location is not guaranteed to display a battle. If a boss is visible but you cannot enter, check that you have enough Max Particles and a three-Pokémon party containing at least one Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon. The steps below separate an unavailable battle from an entry, visibility, or account problem.
What “not appearing” can mean
Players commonly describe several different problems with the same phrase. A Max Battle may genuinely be unavailable because no boss is active at a nearby Power Spot. A Power Spot may exist but be omitted from the map while inactive. You may see the spot and its boss in Nearby but fail the requirements to enter. Or the feature may be malfunctioning for your account or device. Identifying which case you have prevents you from troubleshooting the wrong thing.

| What you see | Most likely explanation | First check |
|---|---|---|
| No Power Spot or boss on the map | No active battle is currently nearby, the spot has rotated or closed, or an inactive spot is hidden | Open Nearby and check again at a different time |
| A Power Spot is visible but has no battle option | The location is inactive or its previous boss has left | Read the remaining-time and boss information in the spot view |
| A boss appears but entry is blocked | Insufficient Max Particles or an invalid party | Check your particle balance and party composition |
| Nearby lists a battle, but tapping it fails | The spot may have closed, rotated, or the app may be out of sync | Reopen the listing and verify that the location and timer are still current |
| Everything meets the rules but the feature still fails | A game issue may be affecting your account or session | Review Niantic’s Known Issues page and report an unlisted bug in the app |
Check for an active Power Spot first
Search the map
Max Battles take place at selected Power Spots rather than at every PokéStop, Gym, or fixed point on the map. Zoom out enough to see the surrounding area and look for a Power Spot that currently displays a boss. If you only check one familiar location, you can easily miss a battle that has appeared elsewhere.

Niantic says their locations move over time, and a spot can close after its battle window ends. A location that hosted a battle earlier may therefore have no active encounter when you return. Treat the map as a live schedule, not a permanent list of battle locations.

Use the Nearby menu as a second view
Open the Nearby menu from the map and select the Power Spot or Max Battle category when it is shown. Niantic’s guidance says this view can provide details that are useful when the map is busy: the boss species, difficulty, time remaining, location, distance, and whether other Trainers are waiting. A listing in Nearby is often the quickest way to find an active battle without manually scanning every street.
Compare the listing with the map marker before traveling. If the timer is nearly expired, the battle may disappear while you are on the way. If the location no longer opens, it may have closed or rotated between the time it was indexed and the time you tapped it.
Understand the current visibility rule
Do not assume that every normally recognized Power Spot will always be marked on your map. In its current Known Issues information, Niantic says inactive Power Spots no longer appear on the map most days, beginning with the Memories in Motion season. This is an intentional visibility change, not proof that your map has failed.

The practical result is that a spot can be absent when it has no active content and then become visible when a boss is assigned. Nearby information can also be more useful than memory of where a spot appeared previously. If neither the map nor Nearby shows an active boss, there may simply be no battle available in your area at that moment.
Confirm that your account can enter the battle
Check the party rule
When you tap an active Power Spot, Pokémon GO checks your battle party before starting the encounter. The official entry sequence requires three Pokémon, including at least one Max Pokémon. Only Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon can participate in a Max Battle; ordinary, non-Max versions cannot substitute for that requirement.
Open the party selector from the Power Spot screen and choose three eligible Pokémon. If you have fewer than three suitable choices, obtain or prepare additional Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon before trying again. A party can fail even when the boss is visible if one of the selected Pokémon is not eligible or if the party does not contain the required Max Pokémon.

Check your Max Particles
Max Particles are the in-game resource used to enter Max Battles. The amount required varies with the boss, so a battle that was affordable earlier may require a different balance when you select another encounter. The entry screen should show the cost and whether your current balance is sufficient.
| Particle rule | Standard value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Daily collection limit | 800 Max Particles | Niantic’s standard limit; an event can change the limit or add a bonus |
| Storage limit | 1,500 Max Particles | Standard maximum published by Niantic; event rules may differ |
| Battle cost | Depends on the boss | Read the cost on the specific Power Spot’s entry screen |
Because collection and storage are separate limits, reaching the daily collection cap does not mean you have no particles to spend, and having room in storage does not guarantee that you can collect more that day. Check both your current balance and the entry cost. If an event is active, consult its in-game announcement because temporary rules can supersede the standard values shown above.
Follow this troubleshooting sequence
- Open the map and Nearby. Look for a Power Spot with an active boss, then open Nearby to see whether it lists a location that is difficult to spot on the map.
- Read the spot details. Confirm the boss species, difficulty, distance, remaining time, and whether the location still opens. A missing timer or closed interaction usually means the encounter is no longer active.
- Allow for rotation. If the spot vanished, move to another listed location or check again later. Power Spots and their bosses are temporary and can change during the day.
- Check Max Particles before traveling. Compare your balance with the cost displayed for that boss. Remember that event-specific limits or bonuses may be in effect.
- Build a valid party. Select exactly three Pokémon and make sure at least one is Dynamax or Gigantamax. Replace any ordinary Pokémon in the selection.
- Try the entry screen again. A Nearby listing can become stale if the spot closes while you are viewing it. Return to the map, reopen the current listing, and verify the timer and location.
- Check official Known Issues. Niantic’s Known Issues page changes over time. Look for an entry that matches missing Power Spots, Max Battles, or interaction failures.
- Report an unlisted problem in Pokémon GO. If the battle is active, your resources and party meet the rules, and no matching Known Issues entry exists, use the in-app bug-report route. Include the approximate time, location, boss, what the map and Nearby showed, and the exact message or button behavior.
Separate an unavailable battle from a broken app
When no battle is available
No active boss in both views is usually an availability issue rather than a device fault. Check another nearby area, wait for the next rotation, and use the remaining-time information whenever a listing does appear. A previously known Power Spot is not a promise that a battle will be running there today.

When a battle is visible but you cannot join
A visible boss with an entry error points first to eligibility or resources. Verify all three party slots, the presence of a Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon, and the particle cost. If the listing disappears during these checks, start over from the current Nearby result rather than relying on an old notification or map position.
When Nearby and the map disagree
Use the Nearby details as the more actionable record because they include the timer, distance, and waiting-Trainer status. The map can omit inactive spots under the current rule, while a Nearby result can become outdated as the location rotates. Refreshing the map view and reopening the listing can distinguish a temporary display mismatch from a closed encounter.

General phone troubleshooting (not a confirmed Max Battle fix)
Niantic’s official materials for this symptom establish the availability, visibility, party, and particle checks above; they do not identify restarting, network checks, or updating the app as specific Max Battle remedies. These are reasonable general device checks after the game-rule checks are complete, but treat them as generic troubleshooting rather than guaranteed fixes.
Best Value
- Close and reopen Pokémon GO, then check the same Power Spot from the current map session.
- Test a stable connection and avoid switching networks while opening the battle screen.
- Install any available Pokémon GO update from your device’s app store.
- Restart the phone if the map, Nearby panel, or interaction buttons are not responding normally.
- Repeat the map and Nearby checks after the app reloads; do not assume a restart creates a battle where none is scheduled.
Situations that often cause confusion
“I always see a Power Spot here, but it is gone.”
The location may be inactive and therefore hidden under the current map-visibility rule, or it may have rotated. Search Nearby for an active boss instead of navigating to the remembered location.
“The boss was listed, but it disappeared before I arrived.”
Power Spot encounters can close while you are traveling. Use the remaining-time field and recheck the listing immediately before committing to the trip. If it no longer opens, find another active result.
“I can see the boss, but the battle button will not let me continue.”
Check the boss-specific particle cost and the three-Pokémon party. At least one selected Pokémon must be Dynamax or Gigantamax, and all three slots must be filled with eligible choices.
“There are no Max Battles anywhere today.”
Max Battles are limited to selected, temporary Power Spot windows, so a quiet period can be normal. Check at different times and locations. If other players can see an active battle at the same spot while your account cannot, document the difference and consult Known Issues before reporting it.
When to report the problem
Report the issue through Pokémon GO when you have confirmed that an active boss should be available, the Power Spot is still open, your Max Particle balance covers the cost, and your party satisfies the Max Pokémon rule. Include enough context for support to distinguish a normal rotation from a defect: your device and app version, approximate time, Power Spot location, boss and difficulty, what appeared in Nearby, and whether another Trainer could enter.
If Niantic has already listed the behavior on Known Issues, follow that entry instead of submitting duplicate reports. The listing is mutable, so check its current wording whenever the problem recurs.
