It does define cheating broadly: examples include spoofing location, using modified software, exploiting bugs, manipulating competitive systems, and trading accounts or in-game goods through third-party platforms. Here are 10 prohibited behaviors to recognize—not tactics to try—and what Niantic says can happen to an account. If you meant legitimate ways to improve, this list is not a strategy guide.
10 behaviors Pokémon GO classifies as cheating
This checklist summarizes examples in Niantic’s Gameplay Fairness Policy and Player Guidelines. It is not a ranking, and the examples are not presented as an exhaustive list.

- Falsifying GPS location. Spoofing where you are to make the game register a different location is explicitly identified as cheating.
- Using modified or unofficial software. The Player Guidelines identify unofficial or modified versions of the game as prohibited.
- Playing through an emulator. Niantic’s support guidance identifies emulators among the methods that violate its rules. See Known Issues and Workarounds.
- Accessing clients or backends without authorization. The Fairness Policy includes unauthorized access to game clients or backends, including through third-party software or add-ons.
- Using multiple or shared accounts to circumvent gameplay. The Player Guidelines identify account use that bypasses intended gameplay as cheating.
- Intentionally exploiting bugs for rewards. Finding a bug is different from deliberately abusing it to gain an advantage; the guidelines include intentional bug exploitation.
- Manipulating competitive systems. The guidelines include manipulating matchmaking, outcomes, rankings, or other competitive features.
- Abusing refunds. Refund-policy abuse is listed as a cheating method.
- Buying, selling, or trading accounts on third-party platforms. The guidelines prohibit account transactions through outside platforms.
- Buying, selling, or trading in-game currency or items on third-party platforms. The same guidance covers transactions involving in-game goods or currency through third parties.
Niantic’s Player Guidelines put the rule plainly: “Don’t cheat.” They also advise players to stay alert to their surroundings and not use the app while driving; the games are designed for outdoor play.

What penalties does Niantic describe?
The Fairness Policy describes an escalating three-strike process, but it does not guarantee that every case receives three strikes. It says some behavior can lead to immediate termination without a prior warning.

| Policy stage | Published duration | Possible effect described by Niantic |
|---|---|---|
| First strike: warning | Approximately 7 days | An in-app warning; gameplay may be degraded. Possible effects include rare Pokémon not appearing in the wild or Nearby tracker, exclusion from new EX Raid Passes, and limits on trading, gifts, Showcases, or Routes. |
| Second strike: suspension | Approximately 30 days | Account suspension. |
| Third strike: termination | Permanent | Account termination. |
These are durations and consequences described in Niantic’s published policy, not independent statistics or a promise about how an individual case will be handled.
How to tell whether an account is banned
Look for the exact in-game message. Niantic’s account login help says a message stating that the account is suspended or terminated for violating the Terms of Service indicates a ban. Other login problems or a map that fails to load may be temporary and do not, by themselves, establish that the account was banned. For other sign-in errors, follow the troubleshooting route on that help page.

How to appeal a termination you believe is mistaken
- Use Niantic’s official ban appeal process if you believe the termination was an error.
- Describe the account action and why you believe it was mistaken as clearly and factually as possible.
- Wait for the review; submitting an appeal does not guarantee that the decision will be reversed.
Niantic says it does not publicly discuss its internal detection methods. Its appeal guidance also says reports alone do not determine bans; action follows identification and confirmation of proof.

The title phrase “cheats that expert players use” is not supported by Niantic’s published guidance: it describes prohibited behaviors, not how common they are or whether expert players use them. This article therefore identifies rule violations rather than presenting tools, instructions, or evasion advice. For improvement, stick to permitted play and consult current, game-specific strategy guidance; this list does not establish which legitimate strategies are most effective.
