In Pokémon GO, a 4-star Pokémon has the highest appraisal category. Search your Pokémon storage for 4* to find them, then use Appraise to see the individual Attack, Defense, and HP evaluations. A 4-star rating is a useful appraisal result, not a guarantee that the Pokémon is the best choice for every battle.
What does 4-star mean in Pokémon GO?
Appraisal is the game’s assessment of a Pokémon’s potential. Niantic’s appraisal guide explains that the Team Leader shows an overall star category and separate evaluations for Attack, Defense, and HP. The top category is four stars, commonly called a perfect appraisal.

- From Map View, open the Main Menu and tap Pokémon.
- Tap the magnifying-glass search field and enter
4*. The inventory search guide identifies this as the filter for the highest appraisal group. - Tap a result to open its profile, open the menu, and select Appraise.
- Review the star category and the Team Leader’s individual Attack, Defense, and HP evaluations.
- If you want to guard against accidentally transferring a valued catch, mark it as a favorite. Niantic says favoriting helps prevent a favorite from being transferred.
Niantic’s documented appraisal route is Main Menu → Pokémon → select a Pokémon → Menu → Appraise. The search guide also documents combining search terms with & or | to narrow results; check the current in-app search behavior if you use more complex filters.

Can evolving or powering up make a Pokémon 4-star?
No. Evolving and powering up do not improve appraisal. Niantic states: “Please note that Evolving or Powering Up a Pokémon will not improve its appraisal, however Purifying a Shadow Pokémon will improve its appraisal.” The exception applies to purifying a Shadow Pokémon, but purification is not a promise that every Pokémon will become 4-star.
This means you can evolve or invest in a Pokémon for other reasons, but those actions will not raise its appraisal category. If the appraisal itself is your goal, check it before spending resources.

Should you power up a 4-star Pokémon?
Decide based on how you plan to use it, not on the stars alone. Appraisal is one consideration; the sources cited here do not establish that every 4-star Pokémon is optimal for a particular battle. If you have a specific use in mind, weigh that use before committing resources.
Powering up increases CP and HP and consumes Stardust and species Candy; higher-level power-ups can require Candy XL. Niantic’s power-up guide notes that costs may rise as a Pokémon gets stronger. Candy is tied to a Pokémon’s evolution family, while Stardust can be used across your collection. The Candy XL help information says players can begin collecting it at level 31 or above.

Does a 4-star appraisal mean “perfect” for every purpose?
“Perfect” is shorthand for the highest appraisal category, not a universal verdict on usefulness. Niantic describes higher appraisal stars as indicating higher battle potential, but the rating alone does not settle which Pokémon to use in a particular battle situation. Treat 4-star as a strong appraisal result, then make any investment decision around your intended use and available resources.
