Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen Just Made Modern Pokémon Look Stingy

The 2026 Nintendo Switch rerelease of Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen makes an old lesson visible: a smaller Pokémon game can feel more generous when every route, battle and detour serves a clear adventure. These are still the 2004 Game Boy Advance remakes of the original Kanto journey, now sold digitally on Switch and Switch 2 with local wireless replacing the link-cable setup.

What FireRed and LeafGreen are

FireRed and LeafGreen remake the first-generation Pokémon adventure in Kanto, the region introduced by Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue. Their core loop is direct: explore a route, catch Pokémon, build a team, defeat a Gym, and advance toward the Pokémon League. The Pokémon Company describes the games as a return to Kanto and highlights the ability to catch and keep every Pokémon in one game.

The Switch release arrives more than 20 years after the originals. It is a rerelease rather than a new visual remake: the maps, story, encounters and progression remain broadly those of the 2004 versions.

What changes on Nintendo Switch

Nintendo says that “some specifications may differ,” but that the contents are broadly the same as the original release. The meaningful changes concern hardware and connectivity rather than game design.

That last point matters for collectors. HOME provides an outward transfer route, but the lack of online play and the limits of the rerelease’s connectivity mean it is not a complete replacement for the trading ecosystems attached to newer games.

Why the older design can feel richer

A readable 2D presentation

A Tom’s Guide reviewer who played more than 80 hours of the Switch 2 version found the pixel-art presentation more detailed and readable than the sometimes stiff-looking 3D models in modern Pokémon games. That is a critic’s observation, not a controlled visual benchmark, but it explains the appeal: sprites, routes and battle information remain easy to parse at a glance.

Progress that keeps moving

Kanto’s route-and-Gym structure gives most activities an obvious purpose. Catching a new species expands tactical options; training prepares the team for the next Gym; exploration reveals an item, shortcut or optional area. The game is compact enough that the main arc rarely disappears beneath long dialogue sequences or a sprawling map.

  • Bring the Pokemon you capture in Fire Red to the worlds of Leaf Green, Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, or Pokemon Colosseum for more challenge

Small scope, dense payoff

Modern entries may offer larger regions, more systems and broader freedom. FireRed and LeafGreen offer fewer layers, but many players experience that restraint as density: towns are distinct, routes are memorable and the next meaningful objective is usually clear. Calling modern Pokémon “stingy” is therefore an editorial judgment about perceived value per hour, not a measurable industry fact.

How the two versions differ

FireRed and LeafGreen are paired editions with the same campaign structure. Their principal practical difference is version-exclusive Pokémon, so players seeking a complete collection generally need local trades with someone who owns the other version or access to compatible transfer and trading arrangements. The rerelease does not add online trading to solve that gap.

Can you trade or battle online?

No. Nintendo’s support information explicitly states that online play is not supported. You can use the Wireless Club for local trading, battling and a minigame with nearby players, and Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required. Plan on local partners rather than matchmaking, cloud lobbies or internet-based version exchanges.

Can Pokémon HOME complete the Pokédex?

HOME transfer is supported, which lets you move compatible Pokémon outward from the Switch versions. It does not by itself guarantee a complete Pokédex: version exclusives, transfer compatibility and the absence of online play still affect how easily you can obtain every species. Treat HOME as part of a collection workflow, not as an automatic substitute for local trading.

Sales show that the focused formula still travels

Nintendo reported more than four million combined global sell-through units for the Switch versions during their first six weeks after the February 27, 2026 release. That figure covers both games together and reflects Nintendo’s reported sales measure. It does not prove that every buyer prefers 2D Pokémon, but it shows substantial demand for this particular compact design.

What you need to buy

  • A compatible Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 console.
  • The digital version of Pokémon FireRed or Pokémon LeafGreen; Nintendo says there is no physical cartridge release.

Tom’s Guide recorded a US digital price of $19 at publication in 2026. That is a time-sensitive historical price, not a promise of the current eShop price.

The practical verdict

Choose FireRed or LeafGreen if you want a focused Kanto campaign, readable pixel art and a progression loop with little wasted motion. Choose with the understanding that the rerelease preserves the old game’s limits: no online play, local-only multiplayer and digital distribution only. Its strength is not feature count. It is how much adventure the compact structure delivers before the credits.
