Pokémon’s Terms of Use prohibit using or facilitating unauthorized third-party software, such as bots, mods, hacks, and scripts, to modify or automate operation within the services those terms cover. If you want to play more, compete, or meet other players, the legitimate routes are official: Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) play, video game competition, Pokémon GO tournaments, Pokémon UNITE, and Play! Pokémon events, which can be held in person or online.
What Pokémon’s Terms of Use prohibit
The Pokémon Company International’s Terms of Use page prohibits unauthorized third-party software used to modify or automate operation within the services it covers. The page gives bots, mods, hacks, and scripts as examples. It was last updated June 15, 2023, and that is the version that applied when this guide was checked on October 7, 2026.

The rule is tied to the services listed in those terms. It does not establish one identical rule for every Pokémon game, app, card product, or event. Before deciding whether a particular tool or practice is allowed, read the terms, then the rules of the specific game or format you are playing.

- Bots: software that carries out actions for you without your direct input.
- Mods: third-party modifications that change how a service works.
- Hacks: unauthorized alterations to a game or service.
- Scripts: automated instruction sequences run against a service.
The test in each case is the same: the software is unauthorized, third-party, and used to modify or automate how a covered service operates.

What the terms do not establish
The Terms of Use reserve the right to suspend or terminate access. That is the enforcement action the page states. It does not describe one standard penalty for every case, and it does not describe how or how often automated use is detected in any particular game. Those details are not established by the terms or the official pages checked for this guide, so do not assume a fixed outcome or a detection rate.
Tournament rules are separate from the general terms
Organized competitions can add their own rules. In the Pokémon GO tournament rules document, dated September 29, 2023, cheating is classified as severe and is grounds for disqualification. That classification applies within those tournaments. It is not a statement about every Pokémon service, and it does not reach games that have no tournament rule of this kind. Newer revisions of the tournament rules may exist, so check the current version before relying on its penalty wording.

Official ways to play
Pokémon’s official play resources cover five routes. The table compares them on the axes that matter most for choosing one. Where the official pages checked do not state a detail, the table says so rather than estimating.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Option | Type of play | Casual or organized | Where the rules are published | Cost and accessibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pokémon TCG | Physical card game | Casual play and organized events under Play! Pokémon | Play! Pokémon Rules & Resources and Play! Pokémon Terms of Use | Not stated in the official pages checked |
| Pokémon video game competition | Video game, format-specific | Organized, under format rules | Play! Pokémon Rules & Resources and the rules for each format | Not stated in the official pages checked |
| Pokémon GO competition | Mobile game tournaments | Organized tournaments | Pokémon GO Tournament Rules (dated September 29, 2023) | Not stated in the official pages checked |
| Pokémon UNITE | Online team game | Organized competition listed in official resources | Play! Pokémon Rules & Resources | Not stated in the official pages checked |
| Play! Pokémon local and online events | Events across formats | Community-focused casual events and tournaments | Play! Pokémon Terms of Use | Accessibility policy exists; specific accommodations not stated in the pages checked |
Three editorial axes separate these options in practice: card game versus video game, casual play versus organized tournament, and solo activity versus scheduled play with other people. The official pages checked do not measure differences in cost, required equipment, or learning time, so those comparisons should be made from current official listings, not from this table.

How Play! Pokémon events work
Play! Pokémon is Pokémon’s official organized-play program. Its terms describe casual events and tournaments, and they require participants to follow the applicable Pokémon terms and any format-specific rules. The terms also state the spirit of the program: “These events are intended to be community-focused and friendly, whether in person or online.” (The Pokémon Company International, Play! Pokémon Terms of Use.)
Because some formats have their own rules and procedures, the event you enter may impose requirements beyond the general terms. Read the format rules for the game you plan to bring before registering.
Choosing an official route
- Identify the game or card product you want to play, and find its current rules in Pokémon’s official Play! Pokémon Rules & Resources page.
- Decide whether you want casual play or a tournament. Casual events and tournaments follow the same program terms but can differ in format rules.
- Read the format-specific rules for that event, including any device or tool requirements, before you arrive or log in.
- Check the Play! Pokémon accessibility policy if you need accommodations. The policy exists, but the specific accommodations and request steps were not established from the pages checked, so confirm them directly with the policy.
- For a physical TCG start, confirm current product listings, prices, and availability with the retailer. These were not verified for this guide.
Accessibility
Play! Pokémon publishes an accessibility policy. It is the right starting point for questions about accommodations at events. Because the specific provisions were not established from the pages checked, avoid relying on any assumed accommodation until the current policy confirms it.
