Point Nemo is the farthest point in the ocean from any land. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) places the oceanic pole of inaccessibility at 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W in the South Pacific, approximately 2,688 km (1,670 miles) from the nearest land points: Ducie Island, Motu Nui and Maher Island.
A separate peer-reviewed calculation published by Garcia-Castellanos and Lombardo in 2007 produced 2,690 ± 2 km. The small difference reflects methods and map data, not competing locations. Bouvetøya and Tristan da Cunha are extraordinarily remote, but they represent different categories—an isolated island and a remote inhabited archipelago—not a point in open ocean that is maximally distant from all land.

What “farthest from land” means
In this comparison, “farthest” has a precise geographic meaning: the location in the ocean whose shortest distance to any land is as large as possible. Geographers call that location the oceanic pole of inaccessibility. It is a coordinate in open water, not an island, settlement or administrative territory.

For every point in the ocean, a calculation can measure the shortest route across the Earth’s surface to a coastline. The oceanic pole is the point where that shortest route is greatest. Moving in any direction from that point eventually brings you closer to land. This definition does not measure distance to a city, a port, a mainland coast, a shipping lane or the nearest person.

That distinction matters because “remote” is used for several different superlatives. An island can be far from a continent while still being closer to another island. An inhabited archipelago can be difficult to reach even if an uninhabited island lies nearer. Those are valid descriptions, but they answer different questions from “Which ocean location is farthest from land?”
Point Nemo’s location and distance
Coordinates
NOAA gives Point Nemo’s position as 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W. The coordinate is in the South Pacific, well away from a coastline or permanent settlement. “Point Nemo” is an informal name; the geographic description is the Pacific, or oceanic, pole of inaccessibility.
Nearest land points
NOAA identifies three nearest land points:
- Ducie Island, to the north;
- Motu Nui, to the northeast; and
- Maher Island, to the south.
These are proximity points used to establish the shortest land distance. They should not be described as nearby destinations. At roughly 2,688 km away, each is separated from Point Nemo by an immense stretch of open ocean.

NOAA reports approximately 2,688 km (1,670 miles) from Point Nemo to the nearest land. The figure is appropriately rounded: coastline databases, map resolution and the treatment of small islands affect the final value. It is better to say “about 2,688 km” than to imply that a vessel could navigate to a mathematically exact boundary at that precision.
Why another study gives 2,690 ± 2 km
Garcia-Castellanos and Lombardo’s 2007 peer-reviewed calculation reported 2,690 ± 2 km from the coasts of Motu Nui, Maher Island and Ducie Island. That result agrees with NOAA’s rounded value. A two-kilometre difference is within the stated uncertainty and is expected when independent analyses use different geographic datasets, coastline representations or rounding conventions.
The two figures should therefore be presented together as consistent evidence:
- NOAA: approximately 2,688 km (1,670 miles).
- Garcia-Castellanos and Lombardo (2007): 2,690 ± 2 km.
Neither number means the location has been surveyed to centimetre-level accuracy. The meaningful conclusion is that Point Nemo is about 2,690 km from the nearest land under the usual global coastline model.
How the oceanic pole is calculated
1. Define the eligible area
The calculation starts with a global geographic model separating ocean from land. The model must include islands, not only continental shorelines; otherwise a small island could be omitted and the “farthest” point would be placed too far away.
2. Measure each point to its nearest coastline
For a candidate ocean coordinate, the algorithm computes the shortest surface distance to every relevant coastline or island and keeps the smallest one. That smallest value is the candidate’s distance from land.
3. Find the maximum of those minimum distances
The oceanic pole is the candidate with the largest nearest-coast distance. This is a “maximum of minima” problem: maximize the distance to the closest land rather than the distance to one selected continent.
4. Report a practical precision
Because coastlines are irregular and represented by finite-resolution geographic data, published results are rounded and may include an uncertainty range. NOAA’s “about 2,688 km” and the 2007 study’s “2,690 ± 2 km” communicate that precision honestly.
Why small islands change the answer
A calculation that uses only continental outlines is answering a different question. Ducie Island, Motu Nui and Maher Island are all included because “land” means islands as well as continental coasts. Even a very small island can become the nearest feature and therefore set the limiting distance for a candidate point. This is why the nearest-land list is as important as the headline number.

Point Nemo compared with other remote locations
| Location | Geographic unit | What “remote” means in the cited description | Distance or context | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Point Nemo | Open-ocean coordinate | Farthest ocean point from any land | 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W; about 2,688 km (1,670 miles) to the nearest land | NOAA, accessed 2026 |
| Bouvetøya (Bouvet Island) | Single island | Exceptionally isolated island | 1,700 km north of Dronning Maud Land and 1,600 km from Gough Island | Norwegian Polar Institute, page updated 2018 |
| Tristan da Cunha | Inhabited archipelago | Most remote inhabited archipelago, in UK government material | 2,816 km to nearest land in South Africa and 3,360 km to South America | UK Government/Royal Navy material, approximately 2013 |
The rows cannot be turned into a single league table without changing the question. Point Nemo is measured from an ocean coordinate to the nearest land. Bouvetøya is measured from one island to other landmasses. Tristan da Cunha’s figures describe an inhabited archipelago’s separation from larger land areas. They use different geographic units and reference points.
How to compare remote places fairly
A useful comparison begins by naming four things: the geographic unit, the reference feature, the distance metric and the date of the evidence.
- Geographic unit: Is the candidate a water coordinate, one island or a multi-island territory?
- Reference feature: Is distance measured to any land, the nearest mainland, a settlement or a transport hub?
- Metric: Is the result a shortest surface distance, a route distance or a statement about access difficulty?
- Evidence date: Is the number a current geographic calculation or a historical description of population and remoteness?
Using the same axes prevents a striking but misleading comparison. Point Nemo’s 2,688 km is a nearest-land measurement. Tristan da Cunha’s 2,816 km figure is tied to the nearest land in South Africa in UK government material, while Bouvetøya’s 1,600 km and 1,700 km figures identify separation from named islands or continental land. None is a like-for-like replacement for the others.

Is Bouvet Island farther from land than Point Nemo?
Not under the oceanic-pole definition. Bouvetøya is itself land, so the relevant question for the island is how far it lies from other islands or continental land. The Norwegian Polar Institute describes it as one of the world’s most isolated islands and places it 1,700 km from Dronning Maud Land and 1,600 km from Gough Island.
Those figures do not compete directly with Point Nemo’s approximately 2,688 km ocean-to-land distance. Point Nemo is a water coordinate measured to its nearest coast; Bouvetøya is a landmass measured to other land. Saying that Bouvetøya is “farther from land” without specifying the reference point would mix two metrics.
The Norwegian Polar Institute’s wording is also deliberately cautious: it calls Bouvetøya one of the most isolated islands, rather than presenting a complete ranking of every island on Earth. That description supports its exceptional isolation without proving that it is the single most isolated island by every possible formula.
Is Tristan da Cunha the most remote place?
Tristan da Cunha is commonly described in UK government material as the most remote inhabited archipelago. The same material gives source-era distances of 2,816 km to the nearest land in South Africa and 3,360 km to South America. Those numbers describe the archipelago’s position relative to those land areas, not the distance from an open-ocean coordinate to every coastline.
The inhabited qualification is essential. “Most remote inhabited archipelago” asks which permanently settled island group is most isolated; it does not ask for the farthest location in the ocean. The UK material also reported a population of 275 at that time. That is a historical figure from the cited source period, not a current population count.
Tristan da Cunha therefore answers a human-geography question. Its remoteness includes the fact that people live on an isolated island group, whereas Point Nemo answers a geometric question about an uninhabited point in open water. Neither label invalidates the other.
Why “most remote place on Earth” is too broad
Point Nemo is often shortened in popular writing to “the most remote place on Earth.” That wording overreaches unless it is immediately qualified. The supported claim is narrower and stronger: Point Nemo is the ocean point farthest from land.
Other meanings of remoteness could produce different answers:
- Farthest from any coastline: Point Nemo, under the oceanic-pole calculation.
- Most isolated single island: a comparison among islands such as Bouvetøya, using a clearly defined nearest-land metric.
- Most remote inhabited archipelago: Tristan da Cunha in the cited UK government description.
- Farthest from a mainland: a separate calculation that may ignore nearby islands.
- Hardest to reach: a travel and logistics question involving access, weather, permissions and transport routes.
There is no single universal ranking that combines these categories fairly. Any article claiming that one location is “the most remote” should state what is being measured.

Nearest land is not nearest inhabited place
Point Nemo’s nearest land points are small, remote islands. “Nearest land” therefore does not mean nearest airport, harbor, road or resident community. A distance measured to a coastline can be much shorter than the distance to a place where a person lives.
Conversely, a location can be close to an uninhabited rock but very far from a mainland or service center. This is why a claim about distance to land should not be rewritten as a claim about emergency access, communications, resupply or human isolation unless those variables have been separately measured.
The same caution applies to the comparison locations. Bouvetøya’s distance to Gough Island does not state how long a journey would take, and Tristan da Cunha’s distance to South Africa does not describe a direct travel route. Straight-line geographic separation and practical access are separate facts.

Latitude
The first value, 48°52.6′S, is latitude south of the Equator. The “S” indicates the Southern Hemisphere.
Longitude
The second value, 123°23.6′W, is longitude west of the prime meridian. Together, the latitude and longitude identify a point in the South Pacific.
Why a coordinate is more useful than a slogan
“Most remote place” is easy to repeat but difficult to evaluate. A coordinate can be plotted, checked against a coastline dataset and compared using the same formula as another candidate. For serious geographic comparisons, publish the coordinate and the metric alongside the superlative.
What the three comparison locations can—and cannot—show
Point Nemo: a global ocean-distance benchmark
Point Nemo is the appropriate benchmark when the question is strictly about the ocean location farthest from land. Its status comes from comparing ocean points worldwide, not from being the most distant island or the most difficult settlement to visit.

Bouvetøya illustrates why island isolation should be treated separately. The Norwegian Polar Institute’s distances establish that the island is very far from other land, but they do not replace a global calculation of the farthest open-water point. The source describes Bouvetøya as one of the most isolated islands rather than providing a complete, consistently ranked list of all islands.
Tristan da Cunha: human settlement and archipelago scale
Tristan da Cunha illustrates a third category: remoteness experienced by an inhabited island group. Its source-era figures to South Africa and South America are useful context for the archipelago’s geographic isolation. They should not be presented as measurements of an ocean point or as evidence that it outranks Point Nemo on the oceanic-pole metric.
What would a broader ranking require?
A genuine ranking of “other remote ocean locations” would first need one common rule. Analysts would have to decide whether every candidate is an ocean coordinate, an island or an inhabited territory; compile the same coastline and island data for all candidates; and calculate distance to the nearest land feature with the same geographic method. A ranking based on nearest mainland would produce a different order from one based on nearest island.
The examples here are therefore best read as clearly labeled reference points, not as positions on one universal scoreboard. NOAA’s Point Nemo statement, the 2007 calculation, the Norwegian Polar Institute’s Bouvetøya description and the UK government’s Tristan da Cunha figures each support a defined claim. They do not establish a comprehensive, consistently calculated ranking of every remote place in the oceans.

Using “nearest mainland” when the metric is “nearest land”
Small islands count as land. Excluding them can inflate the reported distance and identify the wrong point. Point Nemo’s calculation includes Ducie Island, Motu Nui and Maher Island.
Treating rounded figures as exact
NOAA’s approximately 2,688 km and the 2007 study’s 2,690 ± 2 km should not be converted into a false claim of exactness. Keep the qualifier with the number.
Updating historical settlement data without a current source
The Tristan da Cunha population figure of 275 belongs to the cited UK source period. It should not be described as current without a newer official count.

Ducie Island, Motu Nui and Maher Island are named as nearest land points, not as populated destinations. A proximity point on a map should not be silently upgraded into a claim about residents or services.

If someone asks, “Which place is farthest from land?” the accurate short answer is: Point Nemo, the South Pacific oceanic pole of inaccessibility, is about 2,688 km from the nearest land according to NOAA.
If the question is instead, “What is the most remote inhabited island group?” answer with the relevant inhabited-archipelago distinction and identify the source and date. If it asks for the most isolated island, define whether the comparison uses nearest island, nearest mainland or another reference.
Frequently asked questions
Is Point Nemo farther from land than any island?
Point Nemo is not an island, so that is not a direct like-for-like comparison. It is the ocean point with the greatest shortest distance to land. An island’s isolation must be measured from that island to other land under a separately defined rule.
How far is Point Nemo from the nearest island?
NOAA reports approximately 2,688 km (1,670 miles) to the nearest land and names Ducie Island, Motu Nui and Maher Island as the nearest points. Garcia-Castellanos and Lombardo calculated 2,690 ± 2 km in 2007.
Is Point Nemo the most remote place on Earth?
It is the farthest point in the ocean from land. “Most remote place on Earth” is broader and could refer to an island, an inhabited archipelago, mainland distance or practical access, so the narrower oceanic claim is more accurate.
Is Bouvet Island farther from land than Point Nemo?
There is no direct contest because Bouvetøya is land and Point Nemo is water. The Norwegian Polar Institute places Bouvetøya 1,700 km from Dronning Maud Land and 1,600 km from Gough Island, while NOAA places Point Nemo about 2,688 km from its nearest land.

Best Value
Can a person visit Point Nemo?
The coordinate identifies a geographic location, not a visitor facility or travel product. The distance figure alone says nothing about routes, permissions, weather, transport or emergency support, so it should not be treated as a practical destination guide.
Is Tristan da Cunha farther from land than Point Nemo?
That comparison mixes an inhabited archipelago with an open-ocean point. UK government material gives Tristan da Cunha source-era distances of 2,816 km to South Africa and 3,360 km to South America, while Point Nemo’s 2,688 km is measured to the nearest land of any kind.
Does “nearest land” mean the nearest mainland?
No. The metric includes islands. For Point Nemo, Ducie Island, Motu Nui and Maher Island are the named nearest land points, which is why a mainland-only calculation would answer a different question.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBottom line for the comparison
Point Nemo wins the specific contest named in this article: the farthest point in the ocean from land. NOAA places it at 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W and gives an approximate nearest-land distance of 2,688 km; Garcia-Castellanos and Lombardo’s 2007 calculation, 2,690 ± 2 km, independently supports the same result. Bouvetøya and Tristan da Cunha remain legitimate examples of extreme isolation, but their island and inhabited-archipelago definitions are not interchangeable with Point Nemo’s open-ocean measurement.
Frequently Asked Questions
