But the poll is a snapshot of one publication’s readers—not a survey of all PlayStation players—and Sony has not confirmed a revival slate. In this podcast discussion, we look at what the results say, what kind of comeback each series might suit, and why a reported consideration of older IP is not the same as a green light.
What did PlayStation readers want back most?
A Push Square poll published on May 17, 2026, asked, “Which classic PlayStation franchises would you most like to see return?” Jak & Daxter took the top spot, Resistance placed second, and Killzone and Sly Cooper tied for third among the leading choices.

These are Push Square poll results, not estimates of preference among PlayStation owners generally. The poll drew 3,350 votes, offered 21 franchise choices, and let each participant select up to three. It is useful as a recent reader snapshot, but it cannot show what every player wants. See the 2026 poll and its full list of choices.
Why don’t the poll results settle the question?
A Push Square poll from 2020 asked, “What PlayStation franchises should Sony bring back on PS5?” Sly Cooper led that poll with 51%, while Jak and Daxter received 23%. It recorded 33,136 votes and also allowed up to three selections. The result is an interesting historical comparison, not proof that fan priorities have shifted: the poll dates and available choices differ. See the 2020 poll.

Neither poll is a representative survey, and the reviewed sources include no Sony-issued statistic measuring overall demand for any one dormant franchise. The results tell us what participating Push Square readers selected in those polls—not what Sony should conclude about the whole market.
Has Sony confirmed it is bringing back old franchises?
No specific revival is confirmed by the available reporting. A May 2026 Push Square report attributed to industry leaker Nate the Hate the claim that Sony was “exploring and considering” some older, unused IP. The report cautioned that consideration does not mean a project is necessarily happening. It did not confirm a green-lit game, a studio, a format, or a release window for any franchise in the poll. Read the report and its qualification.

Sony’s public comments provide broader context, not confirmation of a named comeback. In a June 2021 PlayStation.Blog interview, Hermen Hulst, then head of PlayStation Studios, described a portfolio that includes both new IP and established franchises. He said, “New IP is incredibly important to us. New IP is the lifeblood of gaming,” while also discussing the importance of embracing PlayStation’s legacy. Read the PlayStation.Blog interview.

Sony’s 2023 corporate report discussed extending PlayStation experiences and IP across console, PC, mobile, and cloud, alongside live-service efforts and adaptations. Its 2025 report described film and television adaptations of Sony-owned game IP and partner collaboration as parts of broader IP development. Those company-wide strategies do not establish that a particular dormant series is getting a new game; an adaptation is not itself a game revival. What kind of return would suit each series?
A poll can rank affection, but it cannot decide what a comeback should be. The more useful podcast question is what players want to do with each series now—and what scale of return its core idea can support.
Jak & Daxter: bring back the adventure
Its poll lead makes Jak & Daxter the clearest preference signal in this snapshot. The discussion should still separate a collection or faithful remaster from a remake or a full sequel: each answers a different desire, from revisiting older games to continuing the series with a new adventure.
Rank #4
- Over 50 retro favourites in one great package
- Online multiplayer functionality for those titles that support 2+ players
Resistance: revisit the shooter, or build a new chapter?
Resistance placed second. A return could preserve the identity of the original series, reinterpret it for a new audience, or simply make earlier games easier to revisit. The poll does not tell us which of those options voters had in mind.
Killzone: decide what a modern entry is for
Killzone tied for third. Before arguing for a sequel, the hosts can ask what distinct role the series would fill in PlayStation’s current lineup and whether that calls for a continuation, a reboot, or a collection. These are editorial possibilities, not announced plans.

- Capcom Classics Collection includes the following features -
- Experience more than 20 groundbreaking and revolutionary games of their time on one disk

Sly Cooper: nostalgia is not a format
Sly Cooper also tied for third in the 2026 poll and topped Push Square’s differently framed 2020 poll. That history makes it an especially useful case for separating enthusiasm for a series from agreement on how to revive it: a remaster, remake, new entry, or smaller project would each be a different proposition.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Could licensing be another route back?
A revival need not automatically be developed by a Sony studio. Sony could, in principle, make a project internally, work with an external development partner, or license an IP to a third-party developer. These are possible routes to discuss, not confirmed plans for any of the franchises above.
A March 2025 Push Square article reported that 72% of more than 1,000 participating readers supported Sony licensing more dormant IP out. That is a self-selected poll about one proposed approach, not proof of broad fan consensus or evidence that Sony has chosen licensing as its strategy. Read the licensing poll report.
How should we judge which comeback makes sense?
Popularity is one useful starting point, but a thoughtful ranking should also weigh the strength of a series’ original hook, whether that idea has room for a meaningful modern interpretation, and what kind of development team might be a good fit. Most importantly, ask whether players want a remaster, remake, sequel, reboot, or a smaller licensed project. Those criteria help distinguish “I miss this franchise” from “this is the version I want made.”
