1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPocket lint, dust and grime can pack into a USB-C receptacle until the plug no longer seats correctly. That can make a phone feel loose, charge only at an angle or display a moisture/debris warning even when the port’s contacts are not permanently broken. Start with a powered-down inspection and the device maker’s safety procedure; never force a tool into a port that the manufacturer says to leave untouched.
Why pocket debris causes a “loose” USB-C port
USB-C is a precision connector system with defined mechanical, environmental and electrical requirements. The USB Implementers Forum’s compliance document, published March 28, 2025, covers receptacles, plugs and cable assemblies. A thin layer of lint at the back of the receptacle can stop the plug short of its normal position. Each insertion can compress more material, reducing the plug’s engagement and making the connection seem loose.

That explains several common reports: the cable falls out, charging starts and stops when the phone moves, or charging works only when the plug is held at an angle. The same obstruction can prevent reliable contact without any visibly bent part. There is no reliable field statistic showing what percentage of USB-C failures are caused by pocket debris, so a precise failure rate should not be assumed.

| Symptom | What to check | First remedy |
|---|---|---|
| Plug feels loose or does not seat fully | Look for compacted lint or dirt with the port facing downward | Unplug power, inspect, then follow the maker’s approved debris procedure |
| Charging cuts in and out | Try a known-good, undamaged cable after inspection | Stop using a damaged cable; clean only within the manufacturer’s limits |
| Phone or cable becomes unusually hot | Check for damage, moisture, crushed insulation or a contaminated port | Disconnect immediately and let the device cool; replace a damaged cable |
| Moisture or debris warning | Inspect both the receptacle and cable for liquid or foreign material | Keep everything dry and wait; do not override the warning |
| Port is burned, melted or corroded | Visible physical or heat damage | Do not clean or charge it; use warranty or an authorized repair partner |
Google’s safe first-response sequence
For Pixel phones, Google’s guidance treats liquid or debris detection as a charging fault that requires inspection before further use. Its instruction is: “Check for moisture or debris inside the USB-C port and cable. Do not put anything into them.” Follow this sequence:

- Let the phone cool if it is warm.
- Disconnect the USB-C cable from the phone and adapter.
- Hold the phone with the USB-C port pointing downward and inspect the opening and cable end under good light.
- For loose, dry debris, gently tap the phone against your hand while keeping the port downward. Do not shake it forcefully.
- Keep the port and cable dry. Wait before reconnecting or attempting to re-enable charging.
If an “Unplug charger” warning returns, or a liquid/debris warning remains for two hours, Google advises contacting the manufacturer. Do not repeatedly reconnect the cable to test a warning that has not cleared.
Cleaning limits: what is safe and what is not
When the maker permits careful cleaning
Some repair guidance, including iFixit’s, demonstrates using a non-metal electronics cleaning brush or a plastic pick kit to lift compacted lint. Use only a tool specifically intended for electronics, work gently, and avoid scraping across the contact surfaces. A brush or pick is a task-enabling option only after the device maker’s instructions allow something to enter the port.

Never use breath or conductive metal
Do not blow into the receptacle with your mouth. iFixit warns that moisture in breath can damage contacts. Do not use needles, pins, paper clips or other conductive metal objects: they can short contacts, deform the connector or leave metal fragments behind. Do not pour liquid, solvent or compressed spray into a phone port unless the manufacturer explicitly specifies that product and method.
When “do not put anything in it” controls
If the phone maker says not to insert anything, follow that instruction instead of adapting a third-party cleaning technique. Use the downward-tapping and drying procedure, then obtain professional service if the obstruction or warning remains. The correct method depends on the device’s construction and warranty terms.

Separate a dirty port from a failing cable
A cable can cause the same intermittent symptoms as debris. Once the port and cable are dry and show no visible damage, test with a known-good cable that matches the phone’s charging requirements. A cable that is frayed, crushed, discolored, bent at the connector or overheating should be discontinued and replaced, not repeatedly repositioned.
If several known-good cables fit poorly, or data transfer and charging both fail after the port is clean and dry, the receptacle may be mechanically damaged. Continued wiggling can worsen a partially detached or bent connector.

Stop DIY work and arrange repair
Do not charge through a port that appears burned, melted or corroded. Google directs users with those signs to pursue a warranty claim or an authorized repair partner. The same escalation is appropriate when the warning persists after the specified wait, when the port gets hot, or when the plug cannot remain seated after safe inspection.

- Keep the phone disconnected from power while damage is being assessed.
- Save the damaged cable for inspection, but do not use it again.
- Describe the warning, heat, odor, visible corrosion and whether multiple cables were tested.
- Ask the manufacturer or authorized service center about warranty coverage before opening the device yourself.
How to prevent another pocket-lint failure
- Carry the phone so the port is not pressed directly against loose pocket debris.
- Keep cable ends clean and inspect them before insertion.
- Insert and remove the plug straight, without twisting or using it as a lever.
- Address a loose fit or intermittent charge early; compacted debris becomes harder to remove safely.
- Never charge while the port or connector is wet. Apple’s safety guidance warns that moisture can cause fire, electric shock, injury or device damage.
A USB-C port that suddenly feels loose is often obstructed rather than destroyed, but the distinction cannot be made safely by force. Disconnect power, keep the opening dry, follow the phone maker’s procedure, and escalate instead of probing when warnings or visible damage persist.
