PiKVM is the practical choice for remote support today. It is a documented, ready-made hardware KVM-over-IP platform with browser access, BIOS/UEFI control, virtual-media installation and power management. The exact-name Pocket-KVM project identified for this comparison is an open-source RK3566 prototype whose README says the KVM software is still waiting to be added. That makes this a comparison between a usable product family and a build reference, not two equivalent finished devices.
If your priority is recovering a server whose operating system is unavailable, entering firmware remotely or reinstalling an operating system over the network, PiKVM has documented workflows. Choose the Pocket-KVM project only if you specifically want to develop or experiment with hardware and software yourself, and are prepared to verify or complete the missing software layer.

What “Pocket KVM” means in this comparison
“Pocket KVM” is ambiguous because the exact-name project located for this topic is not presented as a commercial, turnkey product. Its repository describes an RK3566-based hardware design and supporting configuration work. The same README explicitly says the KVM software portion is waiting to be added.

A hardware design can show how a device might capture video and send keyboard or mouse input, but it does not establish that a remote-support operator can install it, connect through a browser and recover a production computer. The project documentation also does not establish a finished retail model, a current merchant, a total build price, BIOS support, multi-host support or a measured latency figure.

PiKVM, by contrast, is documented by its maker as an industrial-grade, open-source KVM-over-IP platform. Its official product material lists browser-based access, BIOS access, virtual media, power operations and hardware models including the V4 Mini and V4 Plus. Those are product-level capabilities rather than goals for a future build.
PiKVM and Pocket-KVM at a glance
| Question | PiKVM | Exact-name Pocket-KVM project |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A documented hardware KVM-over-IP product family. | An open-source hardware/software project and build reference. |
| Remote BIOS or UEFI access | Documented for the V4 platform. | Not validated in the project documentation available for this comparison. |
| Operating-system reinstall | Uses virtual CD-ROM or flash-drive emulation, according to the V4 quickstart. | Not established. |
| Power control | Documented; ATX connection is optional on the V4 setup. | Not established. |
| Browser access | Listed as a core capability. | Not established because the KVM software is incomplete. |
| Video/input hardware | Supplied as part of the selected product configuration. | README lists an RK3566 board, display, TC358743 HDMI-to-MIPI capture and CH9329 serial-to-HID hardware. |
| Multi-host operation | A separate PiKVM Multiport Extender can connect one PiKVM to several target computers. | No comparable capability was established. |
| Published latency | PiKVM’s handbook claims 35–50 ms total latency. | No measured latency was published for the project. |
| Current product price | A US retailer search listing showed $275 for V4 Mini and $385 for V4 Plus on October 13, 2026. | No verified finished-product listing or complete bill of materials was found. |
The table intentionally separates “not established” from “does not work.” Missing documentation is not proof that a capability is impossible; it means you should not buy or deploy the project on the assumption that the capability already exists.
What PiKVM lets a support technician do
Reach a machine before its operating system starts
A hardware KVM sits below the target computer’s operating system. The V4 quickstart describes controlling power, entering and configuring UEFI/BIOS and using virtual media. In practical terms, the remote session is tied to the computer’s video output and USB-style input path, rather than to an agent running inside Windows or Linux.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →This is the reason PiKVM remains useful when a normal remote-desktop service cannot connect. A crashed kernel, a failed boot disk, a locked login screen or an operating-system update that never completes does not automatically remove access to the firmware screen or the pre-boot display. The target still needs to be physically wired to the KVM and reachable over the network, but its installed operating system does not need to be healthy.
Enter BIOS or UEFI remotely
- Connect the PiKVM video input to the target computer’s video output and connect its USB control connection as specified for the selected model.
- Connect the PiKVM to the support network and open its browser interface from an authorized workstation.
- Use the target’s power controls to start or restart the computer. If you need remote power switching, install the optional ATX connection described in the V4 quickstart; the KVM can otherwise be used without that connection.
- Watch the captured boot screen and send the target’s firmware-entry keystroke when the machine begins booting.
- Change the required UEFI or BIOS setting, save it in the firmware interface and observe the next boot from the same remote session.
The exact key and firmware menu names vary by motherboard. PiKVM provides the transport and input path; it does not standardize every vendor’s firmware layout.

Reinstall an operating system with virtual media
The V4 documentation describes virtual CD-ROM and flash-drive emulation. That allows a support technician to present installation media to the target as if a local optical drive or USB flash drive were attached.
- Prepare the operating-system installer image on the workstation or storage location used by the PiKVM workflow.
- Attach or select it as virtual CD-ROM or flash-drive media in the PiKVM interface.
- Restart the target and enter its boot menu or firmware settings through the remote KVM session.
- Choose the emulated installation device, then follow the operating-system installer’s prompts.
- After installation, detach the virtual media so the computer boots from its internal storage on the next restart.
Virtual media is particularly valuable for a headless machine because it avoids shipping a technician to the rack with a monitor, keyboard and physical installer drive. Installation speed still depends on the target hardware, image size and network path; the documentation establishes the feature, not a fixed deployment time.
Perform power operations
PiKVM’s product information and V4 quickstart document power control. With the optional ATX wiring installed, a technician can use the KVM’s remote controls for the target’s front-panel-style power functions. Without ATX wiring, the video and USB KVM functions remain separate from physical power switching, so a completely powered-off target may require another way to turn it on.
Plan this connection before placing a server in an inaccessible location. Confirm the target motherboard’s front-panel header and the wiring guidance for your PiKVM model. Do not assume that a KVM connection alone can recover a machine that has no power.
What the Pocket-KVM project actually provides
Documented hardware blocks
The project README identifies an RK3566-based build. It also lists a display, a TC358743 HDMI-to-MIPI capture component and a CH9329 serial-to-HID device. These parts indicate the intended building blocks:

- CH9329 serial-to-HID hardware: the path intended to present keyboard and mouse-style input to the target.
The README says the software was verified on Ubuntu 22.04 with kernel 5.10. That is a project-documentation statement, not an independently reproduced compatibility test or a promise that every board revision behaves identically.
Why it is not a drop-in PiKVM alternative
The same documentation marks the KVM software portion as waiting to be added. Without that layer, the listed components do not by themselves provide a finished browser service, authentication model, virtual-media workflow, power controls or an operator-facing recovery procedure. Building the hardware may therefore be only the first stage of the work.
A technically capable maker could treat the repository as a starting point for an embedded KVM experiment. A help-desk team choosing equipment for customer or production systems needs a documented software image, repeatable installation instructions, support expectations and a way to validate recovery before relying on it. Those product assurances are established for PiKVM’s documented models, not for this prototype.
Latency: what is known and what is not
PiKVM’s official handbook states that it offers “35-50 milliseconds of total latency.” This is PiKVM’s own vendor claim, and the handbook presents it as a market-leading figure. No independent benchmark or direct Pocket-KVM-versus-PiKVM test was established for this comparison.
Actual responsiveness also depends on the network route, video settings, browser, target resolution and congestion. Treat 35–50 ms as a quoted platform figure rather than a guaranteed result at every site. The Pocket-KVM project has no published measured latency in the available documentation, so assigning it a number or declaring it faster would be speculation.

Controlling several computers
For a support desk or small server room, the number of target machines can matter more than the number of KVM features. PiKVM offers a Multiport Extender designed to connect one PiKVM to several target computers. The extender expands host count; it does not replace the core PiKVM device.
The Pocket-KVM project documentation does not establish an equivalent multi-host design. You should not assume that one prototype board can switch between multiple computers, preserve separate sessions or provide the isolation required for several customers. If multi-host operation is a requirement, ask for a documented switching architecture and test each target connection before deployment.
Price and availability
| Option | Price evidence | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| PiKVM V4 Mini | $275 on a US retailer search listing observed October 13, 2026. | A time-specific US snapshot; price, stock and shipping can change. |
| PiKVM V4 Plus | $385 on the same type of US retailer listing and date. | Verify the current listing and included hardware before ordering. |
| Pocket-KVM project | No verified finished-product price. | Do not compare an assumed parts total with a preassembled PiKVM price. A complete, sourced bill of materials was not established. |
Those PiKVM figures are not universal prices, regional quotes or guarantees of current availability. They are useful for budgeting only after you confirm the model, seller, shipping, taxes and what accessories are included. The prototype has no equivalent retail baseline, so a low apparent board cost would not represent engineering time, enclosure work, cabling, software completion or support.
Choose by the remote-support job
Choose PiKVM when recovery must work now
- You need browser-based access to a machine whose operating system may be offline.
- Remote BIOS or UEFI configuration is part of the support workflow.
- You need to reinstall an operating system through virtual CD-ROM or flash-drive emulation.
- You want documented power-control options, including the optional ATX connection.
- You need a path to several hosts through a documented Multiport Extender.
- You need a product model and retailer listing that can be budgeted and replaced.
Consider the Pocket-KVM project when development is the goal
- You want to assemble an RK3566-based embedded device and can work from a project README.
- You are comfortable integrating HDMI capture, HID hardware, board configuration and software.
- You can test the unfinished KVM layer in a lab before exposing any production machine.
- You accept that BIOS access, virtual media, latency, multi-host operation and commercial availability are not established by the project documentation.
Do not make the decision on “portable” alone
The word “Pocket” suggests a small form factor, but physical size does not answer the questions that matter during an outage. A compact device still needs reliable target cabling, network access, power and a tested way to regain control after a failed boot. Evaluate the complete recovery chain rather than assuming that a smaller board is automatically easier to support.

Deployment checklist for a PiKVM installation
- Define the recovery cases. List whether the team must enter firmware, attach installation media, cycle power, or switch between multiple hosts.
- Select the model and accessories. Confirm whether the chosen V4 model includes the connections you need and whether the optional ATX wiring or Multiport Extender is required.
- Wire the target before an outage. Connect video and USB control paths, label both ends and verify that the target’s output is captured during a normal boot.
- Test a complete failure simulation. Reboot the target, enter firmware, attach virtual media and perform a non-destructive boot test from it.
- Document the power path. If remote power is required, install and test the ATX connection; otherwise record who can physically start a powered-off machine.
- Restrict access. Place the KVM interface on the intended support network and apply the organization’s authentication and access-control policy.
- Record recovery steps. Keep the target’s firmware-entry key, boot-menu behavior, installer image location and physical cable labels with the asset record.
Lab checklist for the Pocket-KVM build
- Confirm the exact board revision and RK3566 configuration described by the project documentation.
- Acquire and wire the listed display, TC358743 HDMI-to-MIPI capture path and CH9329 serial-to-HID hardware.
- Reproduce the documented Ubuntu 22.04 and kernel 5.10 environment, noting any deviations.
- Separate video-capture tests from keyboard-and-mouse tests so a failure can be attributed to one hardware path.
- Do not connect the build to a production recovery workflow until the KVM software, browser access, authentication, virtual media and power behavior have been implemented and tested.
- Measure latency on your own network if responsiveness is important, and record the setup alongside the result.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The target screen is blank
Check that the target is powered, that the video cable is connected to an output supported by the capture path and that the KVM is receiving a signal during boot. Test with a known-good resolution and a local display if necessary. A blank capture does not prove that the target is frozen; it may be a cabling or signal-format issue.

Keyboard input does not reach firmware
Verify the USB or HID connection, then send the firmware-entry key early in the boot sequence. If the target boots too quickly, arrange a restart from the KVM and watch the captured output from the beginning. On the Pocket-KVM project, input behavior cannot be assumed until the unfinished software path has been implemented and tested.
Virtual media does not boot
Confirm that the installer image is attached to the intended virtual device, restart the target and select that device in its boot menu. After installation, detach the image so the machine does not repeatedly enter setup. Firmware boot-policy settings can also prevent a virtual device from appearing, which is why a pre-deployment test is essential.
The machine is unreachable and powered off
Remote KVM access cannot replace electrical power. Check whether the optional ATX connection was installed and tested. If it was not, arrange an alternate managed-power path or physical access before declaring the KVM ineffective.
Bottom line for support teams
PiKVM is the defensible choice when remote support means controlling a real computer before its operating system loads. Its documented V4 workflows cover BIOS/UEFI access, virtual-media reinstallation and power operations, with an optional extender for multiple hosts. The Pocket-KVM repository is better understood as an open hardware and software starting point: useful for experimentation, but not documented as a finished competitor with feature parity, measured latency or a retail supply chain.
