The right Pocket Gamer Awards category is the one that best describes what players mainly do in your game and why that experience is exceptional. Start with the dominant loop, then test whether a genre category or an achievement category such as update, community, innovation or long-term play gives the stronger case.
The awards are fan-voted mobile-game awards, but the category decision still depends on a clear editorial fit. A game may contain role-playing, strategy and multiplayer features at once; your nomination should lead with the element that occupies the most meaningful playtime and defines the title in players’ minds.

What the Pocket Gamer Awards recognize
Pocket Gamer organizes the awards with industry experts creating the longlist, fans voting to produce a shortlist, and winners announced at a later ceremony. That structure means a nomination needs both a defensible category and a concise explanation that ordinary players can understand.
These awards are separate from the Mobile Games Awards run by PocketGamer.biz. The Pocket Gamer Awards focus on mobile games and player-facing achievements, while the Mobile Games Awards recognize behind-the-scenes industry talent. Entering one does not substitute for entering the other.

Check the edition before you nominate
Eligibility dates and category names change between annual editions. For the 12th Awards, a game had to be released between 1 October 2024 and 30 September 2025 to qualify as a new release. The 2027 page uses 1 October 2025 through 30 September 2026 for its new-release window.

Some categories draw on the broader mobile-game back catalogue, so an older game is not automatically excluded from every award. Treat the award-year page as the final authority for dates, labels and submission rules.
Use the dominant player experience as your first test
Write one sentence that completes this thought: players mainly spend their time in this game doing what? The answer should identify the principal activity, the skill that determines success and the progression or structure that keeps the activity going. Then choose the category whose definition matches that sentence most closely.

When two genres appear plausible, compare four signals: the share of meaningful playtime each activity receives, the principal skill a player must master, the progression structure that organizes the game, and the feature players most readily associate with it. A mode that exists but is incidental should not outweigh the core experience.
Genre and format categories
Best Mobile Puzzle Game
Choose this when solving puzzles is the core loop and the main source of challenge. The nomination should explain the type of reasoning, pattern recognition, spatial manipulation or other puzzle-solving that occupies play, rather than pointing to a puzzle mini-game inside a larger RPG or simulation.
Best Mobile Action Game
Use this for reflex-driven combat, shooting, fighting or action traversal in which moment-to-moment execution is central. Describe the timing, aiming, movement or combat decisions that make the mobile experience demanding. If the action is mainly a small component of a quest-and-build progression system, the RPG category may fit better.

Best Mobile RPG
An RPG nomination should be built around role-playing progression, character builds, quests and an RPG structure. Explain how players develop characters, make build choices and advance through a quest or narrative framework. A game can contain tactical battles without being an RPG if character progression and role-playing are not the organizing principles.

Select this when planning, resource decisions, tactics or strategic trade-offs drive success. Show the decisions that matter over time: which resources to invest, how to position units, when to attack or defend, or how to respond to an opponent. Reflexes may matter, but they should not be the primary reason a skilled player wins.
Best Mobile SLG/Simulation Game
Use this for simulation systems, management, building or strategy-simulation play. The case should make the simulation or management layer explicit: running an organization, balancing production chains, developing a settlement or operating a system whose rules are the main object of play. This category is distinct from a conventional strategy entry when modeling, administration or construction is more important than tactical encounters.
Best Mobile Sports/Racing Game
Choose this when sports simulation, competitive sports play or racing is the central activity. Identify the sport or racing discipline, the control model and the competitive decisions that give the game its identity. A sports-themed RPG or management game should use this category only when the sports or racing experience itself dominates.
Best Mobile Platform Game
This category fits games defined by jumping, timing and platform traversal. Explain the movement challenges, level design and precision required to navigate spaces. Combat or collectibles can be present, but traversal and timing should remain the defining mechanics.

Best Digital Board/Card Game
Use this for a digital adaptation or implementation of board-game and card-game play. Describe the ruleset, turn structure, deck or board decisions and the way the mobile interface supports them. A game that merely uses cards as equipment inside an action or RPG system is not automatically a digital card game.

Best Mobile Family Game
Choose this when the game is designed for broad family play and accessibility across ages. Explain how its controls, content, pacing and difficulty support shared or multi-age participation. Family suitability is about the intended experience and accessibility, not simply the absence of a competitive mode.
Best Multiplayer Mobile Game
Use this when player-versus-player or cooperative multiplayer is central to the experience. Show how matchmaking, teamwork, competition or social coordination drives the main loop. An otherwise single-player game with an occasional multiplayer event should normally be nominated in its strongest single-player genre instead.
Best Roblox Game
This is for a game made within Roblox whose strongest case belongs to that platform’s ecosystem. Explain what the title achieves as a Roblox experience, including its design, audience or use of platform-native possibilities. Do not use the category merely because the game has a social audience elsewhere.

Choose this for a notable mobile adaptation of a game first released on PC or console. The nomination must show why the conversion succeeds on mobile: controls, interface, performance, visual scaling, feature parity or other adaptation decisions. The original game’s reputation alone is not evidence of a strong port.
Categories for timing, longevity and achievement
Most Anticipated Game
Use this only for an unreleased title that has generated substantial anticipation. It is not the right fit for a game already competing as a new release. Explain the evidence of anticipation, such as sustained attention around the announced project, without presenting launch quality as if it had already been evaluated.
Best Game Update or Updated Game of the Year
The label can vary by edition, so use the current wording on the award-year page. This category is for a substantial update, live-service improvement or renewed body of content in which the update itself is the achievement. Detail what changed, how the update altered the player experience and why the work is more significant than a routine patch.

Best Game We’re Still Playing
Choose this when long-term player retention and continued relevance are the central story. Focus on why people keep returning: an enduring loop, meaningful seasonal development, reliable new content or a community that remains active. A recent launch spike is not the same evidence as sustained play.

Use this when community management, player culture or sustained community impact is the strongest distinction. Describe the relationship between the team and players, the health of player-led activity, or the way the game has supported and responded to its community. Do not treat a large audience alone as proof of community excellence.
Best Mobile Innovation
Select this when the game introduces an unusually original mechanic, interaction model, technology use or mobile-native design idea. Explain what is genuinely new, how it works on a phone or tablet and why the innovation improves play rather than serving as a novelty.
Best Mobile Publisher
This is a portfolio-level category. Emphasize the publisher’s body of mobile work, consistency, support and breadth across the relevant award period rather than one isolated feature in a single title.
Best Mobile Developer
Like the publisher award, this category recognizes a body of work. Build the case around the developer’s mobile portfolio, design leadership, delivery and sustained quality across releases or updates. A single excellent game can support the argument, but it should not be the entire argument.
Mobile Game of the Year
Reserve the overall award for the strongest all-around case across design, execution, player impact and overall mobile quality. A title should not be put forward here solely because it dominates one genre feature; explain why its complete experience stands above the field.

- State the primary loop. Write one plain-language sentence describing what players repeatedly do and what makes success meaningful.
- Name the closest category. Use the category whose definition matches that loop, not the one with the most fashionable label.
- Add two or three concrete examples. Point to a signature mechanic, a meaningful update, a community result or a mobile-specific achievement. Each example should prove the category fit rather than repeat the game’s description.
- Resolve overlaps explicitly. If two genre categories seem plausible, compare dominant playtime, principal skill, progression structure and the feature players most associate with the title. State why one signal outweighs the other.
- Use an achievement category when appropriate. If the strongest evidence is longevity, updates, community or innovation rather than the original launch, nominate for that distinction instead of forcing a genre entry.
- Confirm the current rules. Check the award-year release window, category list and wording immediately before submitting. Annual editions can change both dates and available categories.
How to handle common overlaps
RPG versus strategy
Ask whether the central decision is developing a character and completing quests or making strategic plans and trade-offs. Character builds and role-playing structure point to RPG; resource allocation, tactical positioning and long-range planning point to strategy.
Strategy versus SLG/simulation
Both can involve planning, but SLG/simulation is the better fit when management, building or modeled systems are the main object of play. Conventional strategy is stronger when tactical or strategic choices, rather than operating a simulated system, decide outcomes.
Action versus platform
Choose action when combat or reflex execution is the main challenge. Choose platform when jumping, timing and traversal through levels define the experience, even if enemies appear along the way.
Multiplayer versus a genre category
Multiplayer should lead only when cooperation or competition organizes the game’s main loop. If multiplayer is an optional mode attached to a primarily puzzle, RPG or strategy experience, the genre category usually communicates the game more accurately.
New release versus update
A new release category describes the launch of an eligible title within that edition’s window. An update category describes later work that substantially improves or renews an existing game. Do not present a routine balance fix as the award-worthy achievement.
Can an older game still qualify?
Yes, potentially. New-release categories use an edition-specific window, but the awards also maintain categories that can draw on the broader mobile-game back catalogue. The 2027 page explicitly lists persistent categories including Best Character, Best Game We’re Still Playing, Best Community, Best Webshop, Best Game Update and Best In-Game Collab.
An older title should therefore lead with the evidence that exists now: continued play, a significant update, community impact or another persistent distinction. Verify that the category appears in the current edition and that its rules accept the game’s release history before submitting.

A practical self-check before submission
- Can a reader identify the game’s main activity from your first sentence?
- Does the selected category describe the dominant experience rather than a secondary mode?
- Have you supplied two or three specific facts that demonstrate the fit?
- If the game is older, have you used a category suited to ongoing relevance or a later achievement?
- If the game is a port, have you explained the mobile adaptation rather than only the original release?
- If you selected publisher, developer or Game of the Year, have you made a portfolio-wide or all-around case?
- Have you checked the current award-year dates and category labels?
The strongest nomination is not the one that lists every feature. It is the one that makes a single category feel inevitable, supports that choice with concrete evidence and uses a different category only when the game’s most important achievement genuinely lies elsewhere.
