Historical POA Network was an Ethereum-based public blockchain that used Proof of Authority (PoA) consensus; it was not an ERC-20 token, though its project documentation described it as ERC-20 compatible. Its chain-spec repository identified POA Core as network ID 99 and Sokol testnet as ID 77. That distinction matters today: the current poa.net describes a USDC payments service on Chain 77, not the historical POA Core described in the project’s archived materials. Available evidence does not establish whether historical POA Core is still operating.
What was POA Network?
POA Network was a public network based on Ethereum technology. The project’s wiki described it as a smart-contract platform using independent validators and Proof of Authority consensus. It also made a specific distinction: POA had its own blockchain and was not an ERC-20 token, while being ERC-20 compatible. These are descriptions from the project, not independent measurements of performance.

In practical terms, POA was a separate blockchain rather than a token issued on Ethereum Mainnet. The distinction affects where contracts execute, which network’s consensus secures transactions, and what assumptions apply when moving assets between networks.
Which network IDs did historical POA use?
The historical POA chain-spec repository listed these network labels and IDs:

- Engineered to last up to 25 years: Waterproof (IP69K), shockproof and tested for extreme temperatures from −25°C to 50°C. A durable cold wallet with long‑term protection and independently audited security.
- Trusted by 6 million users worldwide - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets
| Network label in repository | Network ID | Repository designation |
|---|---|---|
| POA Core | 99 | Listed as the live network at the time the repository documentation was written |
| Sokol | 77 | Test network |
| Red | 78 | Test network |
| xDai Chain | 100 | Network listed in the historical specifications |
These are historical repository entries, not confirmation that any of those networks remains active or that a wallet or application should connect to them now. In particular, a network ID is not a unique proof of project identity by itself.
How did Proof of Authority work?
In a Proof of Authority system, a designated set of authorized signers is allowed to produce blocks. This differs from systems where participation in consensus is more broadly distributed. Ethereum.org’s general explanation of PoA notes that the approach depends on trusting selected signers and typically uses a smaller authorized set.

- READY IN 3 MINUTES – Set up your ELLIPAL X Card crypto wallet on the offline Starter device, then tap to the ELLIPAL mobile App and start using it. This 100% offline crypto wallet is a no battery crypto wallet with no charging, no firmware updates, and no complicated setup.
- TURN ANY WALLET INTO A CARD – Already have a wallet? Import your recovery phrase from MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Ledger, Trezor, or any compatible seed phrase wallet. X Card works as a backup wallet and physical twin of your existing bitcoin wallet, ethereum wallet, NFT wallet, or altcoin wallet — no transfers, no new accounts, no starting over.
- BUILT ON AN EAL6+ SECURE CHIP – Designed as a secure crypto wallet and private key wallet, X Card generates and stores your private keys inside the EAL6+ secure chip. Your keys never reach your phone, the App, USB, Bluetooth, or the internet, making it a true no bluetooth hardware wallet and no USB crypto wallet.
- ONE APP, EVERYTHING CRYPTO – Manage more with one cold storage wallet. Buy, sell, swap, send, spend, and earn across 45+ blockchains and 10,000+ tokens. Use X Card as your cryptocurrency wallet, coins and tokens wallet, DeFi wallet, and staking wallet for everyday crypto management.
- TAP TO CRYPTO – Carry your crypto cold wallet on a card and secure every transaction with one NFC tap. ELLIPAL X Card combines the simplicity of a crypto wallet with the protection of a cold storage hardware wallet.
- Potential benefit: A limited group of authorized block producers can make block production straightforward and efficient.
- Trade-off: Users rely more directly on the signers’ honesty, availability, and security. A compromised or malicious signer set can create risks such as censorship or chain reorganization.
This describes the general PoA model. It does not establish which specific PoA implementation or configuration historical POA Core used; the available project-specific evidence here does not verify a particular implementation.

An EVM-compatible network can execute Ethereum smart contracts and interact with them through that network’s RPC endpoint. That compatibility can make it easier to adapt Ethereum-oriented contracts and tooling. It does not make a sidechain part of Ethereum Mainnet or give it Mainnet’s security guarantees.

Ethereum.org’s sidechains overview explains the key distinction: sidechains operate with their own consensus. Moving assets between a sidechain and another chain typically involves a bridge or other cross-chain mechanism, which adds separate trust and security assumptions. Compatibility can ease deployment; it does not remove the need to assess who controls consensus, how the bridge works, and what secures the assets.
For historical POA specifically, the available sources do not establish current transaction fees, throughput, validator count, adoption, or operational status. The project’s historical positioning around speed and cost efficiency should therefore be treated as a project claim, not a verified present-day performance comparison.

What happened to POA Network?
The POA website repository preserves a merger announcement describing POA Network’s move into the xDai ecosystem. The announcement said POA users would have an opportunity to exchange POA for STAKE during a stated six-month period. This is evidence of a historical transition plan only; it does not show that the exchange is currently available or establish the present value of either token.

Do not assume so. The current poa.net site describes a USDC payments network called “POA” on Chain 77. Its Chain 77 documentation describes features including agent access and Ethereum-compatible wallets; the site also says Ethereum withdrawals are currently disabled and user-deployed smart contracts are unsupported.

That is materially different from the historical POA Network documentation, which lists Core as network ID 99 and Sokol testnet as ID 77. The matching “77” label does not establish continuity: in the old repository it refers to a testnet, while the present site uses it for its product’s chain. Treat them as distinct identities unless authoritative evidence establishes otherwise. The present service’s descriptions should not be used to infer how historical POA Core worked.
Quick Recap
What should someone verify before using an old POA reference?
- Network identity: Check the exact chain name, network ID, RPC endpoint, and official documentation. Do not rely on “POA” or a chain ID alone.
- Current status: Historical configuration labels are not proof of current network operation. Confirm that the chain and the application you intend to use are presently maintained.
- Consensus and security: Identify who can produce blocks and what security depends on the sidechain rather than Ethereum Mainnet.
- Bridges and assets: Verify the specific bridge, supported direction of transfers, and its current operating status before moving funds.
- Wallet guidance: Archived POA documentation mentions wallet resources, but it does not establish current model compatibility or present-day network support. Confirm compatibility with the wallet maker and the relevant network’s current documentation.
