A JPEG cannot store transparent pixels, so converting a transparent PNG to JPG requires replacing its transparent areas with an opaque color. White is not the universal default for browser canvas export: the current HTML Standard specifies opaque black when a canvas is serialized to an image format without alpha. If a converter produces white, its workflow is applying white somewhere; without knowing the specific tool, it is not possible to identify exactly where.
Why transparency has to become a color
PNG can encode transparency using an alpha channel. JPEG does not support alpha, so the transparent parts of the PNG must be composited with a background color to make an opaque image. The browser or conversion tool may choose that color as part of its workflow.

For canvas serialization to an image format that does not support alpha, the WHATWG HTML Standard specifies that the bitmap is composited onto opaque black. This is the canvas serialization rule, not proof of how an entire conversion website works. A converter may paint its working canvas white before export, or apply white through another step. The title alone cannot establish which mechanism a particular converter uses.

How to make the background white—or choose another color
When exporting with a canvas, paint the intended background across the entire output canvas before drawing the PNG. Then request JPEG output. For white, the key operations are:

This example illustrates how to control the output background; it is not a claim of tested compatibility across browsers or conversion tools.
Choosing a canvas export method

Both methods accept an image type and a quality value for supported lossy formats. The quality value is an encoding request, not a guarantee of a particular file size or visual result. PNG is the required canvas serialization format; if the requested type is unsupported, the browser may return PNG instead. Check the actual result when the format matters: toDataURL() exposes the MIME type in its returned data URL, and a toBlob() result has a type property.

If a converter still gives you white
- Look for a background or transparency setting in the converter. Its white result may come from an explicit fill rather than the canvas serialization default.
- If you control the code, fill the canvas with your chosen color before drawing the PNG and exporting as JPEG.
- Check the actual output type if JPEG is required; an unsupported requested type can fall back to PNG.
- If canvas export throws a
SecurityError, check whether the source image is cross-origin and whether it is permitted for canvas use.
