As of October 2, 2026, IP Australia had issued three adverse reports on trademark applications connected with Papua New Guinea’s planned NRL franchise, according to ABC. The reports reportedly flag a “real and tangible danger” of confusion with New Zealand’s Super Rugby Chiefs. They are not a final refusal or a court ruling, and the PNG Chiefs say they still plan to launch their brand and inaugural jersey in Port Moresby on October 21.
What has happened in the trademark dispute?
ABC reported on October 2 that IP Australia issued three adverse reports in response to the PNG franchise’s trademark applications. The agency’s reported concern is potential confusion with the established Super Rugby Chiefs, based in Hamilton, New Zealand. The underlying reports and a complete current register extract were not available in the cited reporting, so the precise grounds and affected applications have not been independently established here. ABC’s report
An adverse report identifies issues an applicant must address before a mark can be accepted. It is not, by itself, a final decision refusing registration, a court judgment, or proof that consumers have actually confused the two clubs. If reported issues are not resolved within the prescribed period, an application can lapse; the specific deadlines and status of these applications have not been confirmed in the available reporting.
Why are New Zealand Rugby and the Super Rugby Chiefs concerned?
New Zealand Rugby has written to the NRL asking it to reconsider the PNG franchise’s use of the Chiefs name, according to ABC. A September 22 report said the complaint covered the name, logo and branding. New Zealand’s Chiefs chief executive, Simon Graafhuis, said his club feared confusion and commercial harm to a brand built over three decades. Those are the organizations’ stated concerns, not a finding of actual consumer confusion or an award of legal rights. ABC’s account of the concerns September 22 report

The issue matters commercially because the teams operate in related rugby markets and could promote teams and merchandise across borders. The reported dispute concerns more than a shared word: the name, logo and broader branding should be considered separately. The available reports do not establish a final legal conclusion about any of those elements.
Will the PNG Chiefs change their name or launch their jersey?
The club’s latest reported public position is that it intends to proceed under the PNG Chiefs name and launch its brand and inaugural jersey in Port Moresby on October 21, 2026. Chief executive Lorna McPherson told The National that the NRL legal team was working on the intellectual-property issue. That statement describes the club’s plan, not confirmation that the trademark matter has been resolved. The National’s report

No name change, settlement, final trademark outcome or court action is confirmed in the cited reports. The franchise is scheduled to enter the NRL in 2028, leaving time for negotiations, a possible rebrand or further legal steps, but none of those outcomes is established. The October 21 launch is likewise a reported intention, not evidence that the event or branding has already occurred.
How was the PNG Chiefs name chosen?
NRL reported that Prime Minister James Marape announced the name in October 2025 after a public competition received more than 20,000 submissions. The choice was made jointly by the Papua New Guinea and Australian governments and the Australian Rugby League Commission, according to NRL. Marape described “Chiefs” as a name with cultural meaning in Papua New Guinea, where leadership traditions include both men and women, and presented it as a symbol of unity. NRL’s name announcement

Marape said: “Our forefathers and mothers were chiefs who kept order, peace, and balance among our tribes.” He added that the PNG Chiefs would carry “the strength of unity in diversity” on the world stage. The stated cultural meaning explains the choice; it does not settle the separate commercial and trademark questions raised by use of the name in rugby.

The reported examination concerns are from IP Australia, while the New Zealand club’s concerns relate to its brand in New Zealand and the PNG Rugby Football League has separate entries in a Papua New Guinea trademark journal. Those are distinct jurisdictions and records; a filing or journal entry in one does not establish registration rights in another.

A June 2025 PNG trademark journal lists applications by the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League in classes including clothing, footwear and headgear; textiles; toys and sporting articles; advertising; and printed matter.
